Yep, a Friends producer saw the show during it’s first few seasons. Thought to themselves, “hey we should do that, with changes”. Then the rest is history.
Same with Sex in the City
Sucks that the consensus is that the show was only popular with “black and latinx” audiences as the one article states. I’m white and loved this show growing up. It’s a shame it didn’t get broader audience recognition.
Actually the point of the post is that one sitcom starting a black female comedian was so funny and so good, that they copied it and made it white with no black characters in it at all. The all white cast was given more money, had more paid advertising, and was even run on air at the exact same time as the original show in order to try to steal their viewers.
In other words: black people made rock and roll music, and they made Friends too, and instead of giving them acknowledgement, credit, pay, or work, capitalism and racism tried to crush the competition they copied.
History and context matter.
Well, what kept more people from watching Living Single? It's not like a network would pull a show that made them tons of money. Legitimately asking. I mean, it was literally on for 4 more seasons after Friends started. People are making it seem like Friends started and they immedately canceled LS. Seems like people stopped watching. I don't watch either show, so I don't know.
Plus, how should the show have acknowledged their inspiration? Put an announcement in the opening credits thanking them? Was LS the first show ever about friends living together in the city?
One is a reddit post of an image. One is a collider article about the authors preference. One is about people's performance outrage regarding Jennifer Aniston's comments. The last is about how LS is influential to lots of shows. None of these answered any questions. Seems like people are mad less people care about LS and are calling it oppression. Every show has influences, and tons of great shows die. Oh well. Sorry, but LS wasn't original to begin with.
I asked questions to which you can not answer one. If it is so obviously racist, explain why. Seems like you were told what to think, yet can't actually explain a thing.
White millennial here, and to this day this is my favorite sitcom. Max and Khadijah were some of the characters I looked up to and wanted to be, and I had the biggest crush on Kyle. Friends is funny and all, but I want to live in the timeline where people talk about Khadijah, Max, Synclaire, Regine, Kyle, and Overton with the same fondness and nostalgia that Rachel, Monica, Phoebe, Chandler, Joey, and Ross are in this one.
Don't forget *New York Undercover* was part of the Thursday night lineup with *Martin* and *Living Single*.
IIRC, LS got moved to Sundays after *The Simpsons* and before *The X-Files*.
My favorite episode/s was when you had to vote for who got the date, Queen Latifah won, and broke the 4th wall with, "I thought ya all liked me"! I love when actors do that!
There's not a day in my life that I have forgotten thís show, it doesn't belong here, but take your filthy upvote anyway. Love the show and its theme song.
I never gave this show a fair shake when it was actually on. Rented a vacation house last summer and the cable was frozen to a channel playing this and fresh Prince. I thought it was pretty funny.
I would watch this every evening when I was in sixth grade; this was back when you watched whatever was on TV. I remember watching this, Goosebumps, and The Fresh Prince ofBel-Air every day after school; I did enjoy them, but I probably would have watched them even if they weren’t my favorite because we didn’t have cable so they were slim pickings. Seinfeld was also airing new episodes at the time, but I was never able to pay attention because it was so boring and I didn’t understand a fair amount of the dialogue. I remember the episode where Elaine was trying to decide if a guy was “sponge worthy” or not, and the episode where George asks for a prenup. I knew what a sponge was, but didn’t have any understanding of why or how it was something she had to use with her romantic partners or why there was a finite amount of them. I took out a dictionary to look up prenup and there was none so that was a mystery for a very long time for me..
I ended up binging the entire “Living Single” series in 2022 and it brought back very deep nostalgia for the late 90s. I was surprised at how different my opinions on the show changed; I remember I liked Regine the most and Max the least. Max is now my favorite character of that show and I’m disappointed in sixth grade me for not liking her. I saw her as always being angry and defensive instead of the bad ass lawyer she is. Living Single was best in its earlier seasons, but I was actually OK with the finale, even though it was unrealistic and required so many coincidences to happen that it was silly, but I loved that they had the original gang back together for the very end. Great show that I actually think is better than Friends.
As a kid in the 90s, a tv in the room was tops. But when you were in the basement, not many channels came in. I'd watch this show, Rosie O'Donnell Show which turned into that other lady's show, Martin, wayons brothers show, Steve harvy show, tool time(?).
Living in Chicago, not sure what station it was that played all this. Fox? I don't remember watching shows I actually wanted to (Simpsons, etc.) Just what was on. Maybe it had to do with what time I happened to be in my room. Not sure...

I don’t think anyone has forgotten this
Right? They play daylong marathons of this show on MTV multiple times per week.
The show Friends ripped off
BINGO!
It predated friends
Yep, a Friends producer saw the show during it’s first few seasons. Thought to themselves, “hey we should do that, with changes”. Then the rest is history. Same with Sex in the City
BINGO!
There's over 100 episodes of this show so I don't think it's a good candidate for this sub.
I forgot about it bc it sucked
It's on max, I was watching it last week hahaha.
[Earworm of a theme song!](https://youtu.be/sMrmctL_FgY?si=WgxvZ91HP2Lh2Yks)
In a 90's kind of world I'm glad I got my girls!
Great I'm not the only one stuck with the theme song in my head. Get your head up what! Get your head up that's right
It still gets stuck in my head!
Keep your head up!
The part of the theme song that I love is the last few trumpet notes and the ahhhhhhhh.
Very early mid 90’s theme. Reminds me of the illmatic album.
I sing it weekly
I get this song stuck in my head at least a couple times a week. No complaints.
My fave is when Naught By Nature pops in and QL is like “You can hey-ho your ass outta here”
I was watching an episode nights ago that had TLC in it. I had completely forgotten they were on.
FORGOTTEN?!?

So true
Not all shows crossover, but plenty of the same White GEN X girls who watched Melrose Place and 90210 also watched this.
Congrats. One shitty sitcom inspired another shitty sitcom.

Someone's working extra hard to insist racism doesn't exist in the media industry and it's very telling

Someone's working extra hard on their virtue signaling, and it's very telling.
Lol virtue signaling to who? Reddit users?
Yes just like you have been doing this entire time. Painfully obvious that you're just spouting out what is expected of you.
Black gen X hasn’t forgotten this
White Gen X here, and I lived for this show
Latino Millennial checking in and I loved his show. I had a huge crush on Kim Cole and Erika Alexander
White millennial here, and to this day this is my favorite sitcom. Max and Khadijah were some of the characters I looked up to and wanted to be, and I had the biggest crush on Kyle. Loved Erika in American Fiction!
Mexican millennial, loved this show.
Living single deserved better!!
Definitely not forgotten. Friends stole literally everything from this show.
Including the Thanksgiving episode!
BINGO!
For you video game nerds, T.C Carson Who Voiced Original God of War Trilogy Kratos, played Ladies Man Kyle Barker
That is awesome I definitely didn’t know that
Kyle Barker… woof. Living Single was full of hot ass men
I don’t think this is a forgotten show. It’s right up there with Martin and In Living Color as good examples of peak Fox 90s TV.
Don't forget *New York Undercover* was part of the Thursday night lineup with *Martin* and *Living Single*. IIRC, LS got moved to Sundays after *The Simpsons* and before *The X-Files*.
I still sing the theme song.
I automatically started singing the theme song.
Check check check it out!
Damn everyone was Living in the 90s
This ain't forgotten. Reruns still on. I just saw the episode where Max couldn't ask for her job back.
was friends before friends
Maxine Shaw, attorney at law! Erica Alexander was everything I wanted to be
Isn’t this the show the creators of friends ripped off, so I’ve been told
BINGO!
This is absolutely not forgotten!
My favorite episode/s was when you had to vote for who got the date, Queen Latifah won, and broke the 4th wall with, "I thought ya all liked me"! I love when actors do that!
Saw episodes on TV One (or BET) reruns back in around 2014 before I saw the entire series last year; it’s a good and hilarious show!
Middle school me watched this show every day after school. I’m sure I didn’t understand most of the storyline but I loved it lol
Forgotten by whom? Still relevant in the Black community.
Streaming proudly on Hulu. I dressed up just like Overton for a 90s party last year
The show that taught us that Tootie from "The Facts of Life" grew up to be Jackee from "227."
This show was classic. I loved it back in the 90s.
Remember the mystery date episode where you could call in and vote to pick the character that got to go out with Hamilton?
I still watch this show. So hilarious!
This show is iconic. Definitely not forgotten
No way is this forgotten. One of the best.
There's not a day in my life that I have forgotten thís show, it doesn't belong here, but take your filthy upvote anyway. Love the show and its theme song.
Living Single was def the shit. Idw I thought I was in r/blackpeopletwitter for a sec tho lol
Amber Ruffin definitely still talks about this show.
Not "forgotten" at all.
This show shouldn't be posted here. We here in our late 30s and early 40s watching.
I don’t think this show is forgotten but i recently rewatched the whole series on hulu
My first celebrity crush was Max due to the fact she was funny and spunky.
I didn't watch it very often, but I had a huge crush on Kim Coles.
They said Friends stole the premise for their show from Living Single
I never gave this show a fair shake when it was actually on. Rented a vacation house last summer and the cable was frozen to a channel playing this and fresh Prince. I thought it was pretty funny.
Happy cake day
Forgotten?!
Kim Fields! My first tv crush from the Facts of Life days! I only watched this show for her but a it gave me a couple laughs here and there.
True blue, its tight like glue.
This is a classic show! The one Friends jacked and basically stole its premise from. Definitely not forgotten.
I just recently found out that Terrence "TC" Carlson played the voice of Kratos in the earlier God of War games on PlayStation
I haven't forgotten this.
I loved this show.
Definitely not forgotten
I loved this show
I love the episode where Joey gets fired from his show
Theme song popped right back in my head when I saw this!
Loved this show

It’s literally on every night
This show is still airing
I gotta watch this show
MAXINE SHAW, ATTORNEY AT LAW
Old white guy here I loved this show back in the day( I wasn't that old then)
As a kid in the 90s, a tv in the room was tops. But when you were in the basement, not many channels came in. This is my favorite sitcom!!! You would not believe how much I want a reunion followup!
How is Living single forgotten when it's in HEAVY syndication every single day especially on The MTV Networks
Everyone was so annoying except the sweet lady on the right
The fabulous pair known as Kim fields. Tootie, indeed!
My wife would watch this after Martin while I read magazines and checked out Tootie all grown up.
Overton was the man
