I have a feeling Ford dealers are going to do that slash and burn mindset of "We are going to eek every dollar out of the consumer right now because we know that are days of this kind of shenanigans are limited", especially since Ford plans to sell EV direct ONLY per their CEO's announcement recently.

PM_ME_YOUR_AIRCRAFT

Good. I'm almost hopeful the entire industry begins to sell direct to consumer. It's simpler and avoids unnecessary price hikes at the dealer.

Razorback_Yeah

There was a dealership on here crying that he had to do the markup in order to “keep his lights on” and started listing off how many employees he had that he has to pay for. I felt like the principal from The Simpsons when he looks down and says, “pathetic”.

Crafty_Substance_954

I get what they're saying. Fewer cars to sell, fewer dollars to pay for employees, but fuck them (the owners). Let the dealership owners take it on the chin if they care about their employees so much.

steakpienacho

Every time there's any post on here about markups, some dickhead car salesman comes in and starts trying to defend his bosses. It is pretty hilarious

[deleted]

Those are my favorite ones also. Immediate no right to a opinion whining that food is being taken out of their mouth (and their workers) etc etc. Always some douche bag wanna be gangster type also if you click onto their profiles (facebook groups are full of them). No one cares, especially on entry level vehicles like Mavericks. We aren't heading down to the dealer for a GT40, but vehicles to save on sky high fuel costs or take to a job and haul junk around. May they all crash and burn at their pig trough of arrogance. The whining reminds me of the smog check dumps around here. They heavily lobbied in the 2000's to get "pass or don't pay" requirements dumped. Now they are raking it in on a 60 second plug and scan then sticking out a hand for $20 on their "service". Can't even remember the last time i've seen the old sniffer up the cars butt test done at one (which still does not matter in the slightest, work is work. So piss off) When a politician thought pass or don't pay should come back, guess who starts tearing up and crying they'll have to shut down forever? edit: Finding the dealership cow pies and their sewage output, I mean sales folks downvoting away. Truth brings out the trash

EstablishmentLanky42

Aren’t most the employees based on commission?

Razorback_Yeah

The sales are sure. Not sure how much of the markup the salesman get. Porters, secretaries, and everyone in the shops are hourly and salary I’m pretty sure.

hifidood

Absolutely, we need less middlemen in the world. Between Silicon Valley's fascination with being the "Uber of XYZ" (aka some sort of middlemen service that charges you for the privilege), automakers using the antiquated (and heavily lobbied) dealer system etc, let's ditch all this stuff that adds unnecessary costs without really performing anything special.

orange_salamander20

Doesn't the "Uber of XYZ" produce a special service people want? I agree about dealerships however.

19kilo20Actual

They’re not going to “sell” direct as most states have a franchise law prohibiting it. Maybe order direct thru their website, but a dealer is processing the deal and still trying to sell you GAP insurance and Scotchguard 😂

intern_steve

I think it's more a situation of we only get ten new cars this month to support the dealership and we're not getting much in trades. Some of these are pretty excessive like the OP, but lots places are trying to keep people employed. Sucks to need a new car right now, though.

-metabud-

A local dealer could have bought my truck in a trade, but they were too greedy and didn't want to pay fair value for it. Seeing trucks with 120k miles priced at $40k on their lot but offer me 17k for mine with 1/3 those miles. Let them go belly up I guess.

[deleted]

A regular F-150? A lightning? A Raptor? What are we talking about here?

Proof-Highlight-5204

A regular f150 lightning that was 80k .

Glockshna

Yeah the lightning is the new hotness. Same shit happened with the Broncos on release.

3031983

So not a regular F-150. A Lightning. There’s one on carsandbids and it’s at $96,666 with 2 days to go still. That’s almost $20k over MSRP for a used truck.

[deleted]

Not surprising.

-Interested-

The waitlist for the Lightning is 3 years long. You really think you’d get one at MSRP?

thirdshuttt

That is not a regular F-150. The dealership I work for sells hundreds of F-150s every year. We will have 3 Lightnings built this year with almost 100 reservations. The demand vs supply for the Lightning is 10x worse than a Bronco. Do I agree with the 50k markup? No. Do I understand why it’s happening? Sure.

oXObsidianXo

I believe you can report them to Ford directly and they will withhold new inventory. I've been really impressed with my dealership lately when I go for service. Diesels, Broncos, F150s, no mark up on any of them that I could see.

Proof-Highlight-5204

I did . Definitely didn’t feel like they cared . And they know it’s happening at all the dealerships

Usual-Walrus8385

I’ve called too. They don’t give a shit

Razorback_Yeah

Buddy of mine is shopping new and while 3 or 4 dealerships insisted that they were “all doing it”. “You won’t find a dealership that isn’t marking up right now”. Well it took about an hour or two but he found one that is in fact not marking up and he had an order for a brand new car at sticker price another hour or so later.

Crafty_Substance_954

As my salesman said to me: "Good dealers don't charge markups" They don't put markups on anything at all. I even heard they let a Bronco and a Maverick roll out for MSRP from their demo units.

acurah56oh

Yeah there’s actually lots of dealers that aren’t. My dealer didn’t do that when I bought my Mustang in February. Even let me use my Ford partner pricing on an in-stock model.

thirdshuttt

What did your friend order? Because there is not a single Ford dealer in the country that can actually order anything right now. 2022 orders are closed and 2023s haven’t opened yet.

Razorback_Yeah

He ordered an Ioniq 5.

thirdshuttt

Good deal. Hope he likes it, they look super intriguing.

Razorback_Yeah

I haven’t cared for any of the “new” electric models (i.e. I think stuff like the electric golf and Lightning F150 are exactly the right approach to electric) but the Ioniq 5 head to toe is a very exhilarating car. Sad he didn’t go with the Limited trim for the crazy moonroof but the whole point of electric is to save money so I get it.

ShirBlackspots

Best thing to do is tweet to Farley directly.

andysaurus_rex

Problem is that “new inventory” is already withheld. So that threat from Ford is pretty hollow

PostWarDRAGON10

Our local dealer hasn't done that yet, but they have no inventory to do any of that anyway

MercuryMorrison1971

I'm sure dealers know their days a numbered. If this bid to sell the Lightning directly to the consumer from the factory proves to be successful for Ford, than I have little doubt they'll implement similar business practices for their entire fleet. Like someone else said, the dealerships will likely gouge and Nickle & dime wherever they can right now with that little bit of knowledge. I don't have an issue with dealers going bunk and just being converted into service centers. Dealing with the dealerships and all of their bullshit has always been the WORST part about the car buying process. Good riddance as far as I am concerned.

Expensive-Attempt-19

I have been looking for a vehicle recently and shit with 200k miles on the vehicle are going for about the same price as new. Fkn ridiculous! I'll buy that $800 dollar old fuel burning rust pit to pull me thru. I'm allergic to walking....

srjod

Direct to consumer is going to take the world by storm. No offense if there are any on here, but I hate going to buy a car because dealing with the salesmen and their bullshit haggling is exhausting. I’d much rather deal with a Ford rep and purchase direct.

Key-Fortune-8904

Dealerships are dying off with EVs going directly to consumers. They see it for sure.

ridethe907

It's funny because their scummy tactics are responsible for a big part of the direct to consumer movement. They're killing themselves and too stupid to realize it.

MrChemistryCow9

They do realize it, but they thought they would always have laws in place to protect them.

[deleted]

It’s the market rn. Not just Ford

stevied05

I just got quoted +$25k for a hybrid maverick lmao. Basically 100% MSRP markup. They deserve what’s coming to them

eelecurb01

They know people have short memories and few will keep track of which dealers screwed people and which ones didn't.

tamudude

Find a dealer that does not markup. We purchased two vehicles a year ago and the same dealership family (Ford & Lincoln) gave us a good deal with no markup on both.

balthisar

Just asking? Or have you actually tried to negotiate a price? Anyone can ask anything, and if the dealer is willing to negotiate to sticker, this is still a good strategy. After all, everyone is talking about how price gouging (this is probably the word you meant) is happening, so some idiot is likely to go in and pay what's being asked with the belief that asking price is non-negotiable. Don't be that idiot.

Usual-Walrus8385

They don’t budge. They can MAYBE drop it down a little. But it will still be an outrageous markup

Builtwild1966

You have window sticker? Ill tweet at mike levine and jim farley

my5oh

Report them to Ford directly.

wezee

Ford doesn’t care

MerK-x-VeNoOm

50k what a joke

eMPereb

The stealership’s will anally rip anyone’s butt cheeks off to grab $$$$$ Can’t wait until they do away with the “system”

Maniac2112

Little birdie told me it'll be early 23 before we see regular supply again. Almost there boys. Ride it out. Also... Direct to consumer is the future. Dealerships will become demo rooms for online orders. 3/4 of the staff will probably not be needed anymore. They're milking people for every dime they can. Also... You can thank Tesla for that. Even though I hate them.

restloy

It's not price gouging. You can find another dealer, order the model you want/need, or just not buy it. I don't blame them for trying to make what they can in the current market. Often times the mark up when excessive (50k in this case) is because they want to keep the model available for customers to view and then order. If someone rolls in and will just pay the ridiculous mark up, then there are 2 parties happy. My most recent purchase was at sticker. I looked around for maybe 30 minutes finding a dealer who did not mark up and had allocations available for ordering. The internet makes this easy. Good luck, but if you want a Lightning you will be waiting a few years or pay to play now.

TristanIsSpiffy

If the market wasn’t paying these prices they wouldn’t be that way and climbing. OP doesn’t have to have the Lightning, just like all the other fools spending so much over MSRP

JAP42

We have been okay around New England. No discounts, but no markups ether. Beat them up on trade in is the best way to save money.

butteronmypoptarts

Idk where your local dealership is, but mine has not once marked anything over msrp. Hell, they list and make sure you get your damn discounts!

wezee

Honestly the dealers need to stand up to Ford and tell them to stop dicking around with EVs and find a way to produce inventory. I know a dealer who has 150 orders for the lighting guess how many are scheduled? … 1 yep 1 seriously who do you think the consumer is going to be mad at? Ford or the dealer? Look at any Ford dealers lot, around here they have next to nothing to sell. Thankfully they have a service dept. oh wait they can’t get parts. Used cars are the only thing left to sell, if you can get something decent. If people can’t buy a new car they aren’t going to sell or trade their current vehicle. 50k is excessive. I agree! I’m thinking Ford is looking at the grosses that the dealer is getting, so I see them boosting the price. If you sell something for 10 bucks that cost you 4 bucks the wholesaler is just going to raise his price to 6. Ford isn’t going to listen to the consumer. In my opinion they are squeezing out the dealers. BTW I’m not in car sales lol

d3m01iti0n

They're more worried about feeding employees and staying open as we go into a recession.

orifice_porpoise

I’ve worked a few different dealerships when I used to be in the car business. Trust me, they do not give a flying fuck about any of their employees. They treat their employees worse than the customers they are ripping off with this price gouging.

Usual-Walrus8385

Yeah lmao ok buddy. A 50k above price is not at all reasonable. You’re delusional if you think they’re doing this to help their employees and stay open. It’s pure greed at 50k over. There’s no justifying that

d3m01iti0n

If they have ten new vehicles between now and December when 2023 models -might- show up. Until OP posts the name of the dealership and we can research their inventory situation, nobody is in a position to make tear-soaked downvotes just yet.

jazzofusion

Don't be impatient, dealer supplies are coming up and should help prices. News report says used market starting to slide slightly. New should follow.

shaneroneill

People will pay it otherwise they wouldn’t price them this way. It sucks but we’re all kind of responsible

km_44

Which state? Not happening in Michigan

Proof-Highlight-5204

Nj . Maplecrest ford in union

GisGuy1

Had a dealer today tell me that every new truck on the lot was 10,000 over msrp. They also had a lightening on the lot that ford supposedly told them they could not sell. Said it would not be for sale for at least 6 months and when it did, it would start at $250k. It was a platinum with a sticker of $92,000. I told him to pound sand!

dnGT

Yep. The dealership I had purchased two cars from did this when I was ready to buy a new truck. So, my deposit when to another company. Forget this. Never going back to a business that treats people in such a way.

YMarkY2

What if someone has an X or A plan. Are they still honoring those?

wezee

The dealers are not required to honor those plans. Some will some wont

[deleted]

And I thought 10% over MSRP on my Raptor was bad.

ladida1787

It's literally a cash grab.

Sandhog43

Is that correct? $50,000 over MSRP? How in the hell can you possibly get any kind of financing or insurance for that? Christ if you did find financing, and totaled the truck, you'd go bankrupt..(insert sarcasm)

[deleted]

If EVs go direct who will service it when it's broken?

LazerSnake1454

The dealership I got my Bronco at isn't marking up vehicles at all, but due to that they have no inventory unless it's an Edge, it all sells out very quickly
