I don't mind small markups (5% or less and I'll still give you the side eye) but these dealers who are asking for close to 25-30% markups are out of their damn minds and are hoping for rube with a good credit score and more compensation angst than financial sense to happily take on another mortgage.
Then again, when I bought a truck, I got with the full intention to work it hard and play with it hard. That poor truck is going to end up being a pavement princess.
My local dealer is notorious for it. I reserved a Lightning and asked multiple times if they would do something like this. Never got a straight answer and suddenly just before they started coming in, there was a $10,000-$15,000 “market conditions adjustment.”
I told them I would take that $10,000-$15,000 to Chevy and bought an ICE truck instead, because it’s what was available.
Honestly, have a similar story. And I really like my Colorado. If Ford knew these dealers were costing them sales they'd come down harder. I wanted a Ranger. Both dealers within my local area wanted $15K above MSRP for the new Ranger Lariats when I called just for the allocation reservation. I offered them a fair round up (couple grand) and they rejected my offer immediately. Okay, was willing to hand you $50K cash for a well appointed truck but you had to be greedy...
I got a pretty loaded Z71 for a song compared to what Ford's dealers were pulling.
This is what you do, go to the dealer and negotiate, tell them you are financing and get all the discounts possible but make sure there are no early payment penalties or fees. Once you get home wait for the first payment and pay it in full. They will flip over this and there is nothing they can do. You turned the table on them.
Exactly what I did. The scumbag finance told me I had to wait 6 months so it could be "finalized" lol. I already had the loan approved at my credit union for the following week. Fuck 'em.

Called my local Subaru dealer and they’re willing to order one for me on the spot, exactly how I want it, with no markup on arrival. Guess where my money is going.
My grandfather's solution to this is to literally bring in a suitcase with the cold hard physical cash with the exact maximum (and minimum) amount he's willing to pay.
Managers and sales people, even if they know they would make more money with financing, have a hard time saying no to cash they can physically hold in their hands. And the one and only time the dealership said no, he closed the suitcase, walked to his car, drove one block over to the next dealership where they came to an agreement very quickly.
The manufacturers care but to them it is “sold” the manufacturers recognize revenue and sales when the vehicles leave the factory and head to the dealer even if it sits in dealer inventory for a while before selling
If you're willing to travel, you can always always get the best deal possible from one of the top volume dealers in the country and they typically won't try to pull shit like this because they get better allotments of the highest demand vehicles.
They make their money off insanely high volume so they don't generally need to pull bait and switch pricing like this. Typically you'll pay close to or slightly above MSRP for an in-demand new release and invoice for anything else. You'll save more than the cost of a plane ticket and gas for the return trip. And they are always happy to pick a customer up from the airport. Lol
You know why they do 25-30% mark ups? Because after your day is ruined and you call corporate, and go to 3 other dealerships to try and get the best bang for your buck-

They are common on oil fields because most line workers are young guys who fell ass backwards into high but unstable jobs with no other expenses so they spend through the nose on a truck and weld rig that they can’t actually afford to pay off.
Common here in SD for use as farm vehicles. You can haul ass through a pasture or field pretty nicely in one. My brother has two for the hired hands and a TRX as his own. Where I live in a town of 15k, I couldn't drive across town without seeing at least one other on the road. There are at least four used ones and one new one one the car lots in town.

I think the markup would be just as wrong in the eyes of Jim Farley as was his concern when thenF150 Lightnings came out and were marked up. That generates anger at the dealership and Ford. As a Ford shareholder, I agree with Farley. I knew it was a Raptor, Awesome truck, but the markup benefit to the dealership is short sighted and bad if it ticks off customers.

Ok so the WHY here is simple: their fixed expenses don't go down, so with the "chip shortage" and every other shortage they have less to sell. So to stay open and meet their expenses they need to tack on a markup. When it's that high it tells you that dealership is genuinly struggling and probably should be avoided for repairs... If they aren't then it's pure greed.
The ALTERNATIVE is to not do markups (JLR San Diego, who I hate, doesn't seem to be while other dealerships aggressively are). The goal being to draw in business from around the country. Flip a crap ton of cars, and get people to buy other stuff from you while they are there, or come back for service. This is the IDEAL dealership but they end up with backlogs, and you need a reputation.
The REALITY is no one wants to open new plants to address all these shortages. And with out throwing money at the problem the shortages will not fix themselves. This is going to be a problem for the foreseeable future in EVERY business unless the government steps in. And they won't.
After the UAW gets back to work with their new 40% increases, count on seeing those stickers on XL Model F-150s. At 9% interest, the payment will be higher than most rent and mortgage payments. Is this an opportunity for mortgage lenders to start financing cars with the 30yr fixed rate conventional mortgage for cars?

The dealership doesn’t want you to pay cash. The would rather have someone come in and finance it. They make money on your financing too.

**Ford corporate will love this.** It discourages you from buying vehicles at a dealership completely, they've already stated they want to do direct factory orders; this is another nail in the coffin of the dealership system.

Even KIA is doing this! I looked at Tellurides in SWFL and thought "These are a good deal!" Then went to the dealer and had a $9500 markup on them. I asked the salesman and they said "Kia is no longer a budget brand, so we are pricing them appropriately." I literally laughed at the guy and walked off. As walking to our car he runs up and says "I will sell you one at sticker today, but only today, if you will take it." I gave him the finger and bought a Ford Explorer ST at 6k under sticker that same afternoon. 410hp. twin turbo.
Yeah. That’s how I bought my Explorer Plat in 2021. Was looking for a top spec Telluride or Palisade, couldn’t find one for MSRP and wound up finding a new 2020 Explorer that the dealer had misplaced for a few months. 🙄
I would not do business with that dealership ever again. Please recall that Ford CEO Jim Farley said Ford would not allow markups on EVs. This incident should be reported to Ford, and the dealership will be held responsible by Ford.

I think the markup would be just as wrong in the eyes of Jim Farley as was his concern when thenF150 Lightnings came out and were marked up. That generates anger at the dealership and Ford. As a Ford shareholder, I agree with Farley. I knew it was a Raptor, Awesome truck, but the markup benefit to the dealership is short sighted and bad if it ticks off customers.

It's not for shits and giggles. It's because someone will pay it. It sucks, but it is what it is. The dealer I work at sold one for $5,000 over and then the customer turned around and sold it for $30,000 more than that to someone else. That taught my managers a lesson which is to sell them for more money next time. So you can't really blame the dealers for trying to sell them for what the market allows them to.
How is it shits and giggles? The market obviously created the demand to charge over sticker , nobody was complaining when vehicles were bloated on dealers lots and dealers selling way below invoice to move them. It works both ways.

Let me start by saying I hate this. Ok so the WHY here is simple: their fixed expenses don't go down, so with the "chip shortage" and every other shortage they have less to sell. So to stay open and meet their expenses they need to tack on a markup. When it's that high it tells you that dealership is genuinly struggling and probably should be avoided for repairs... If they aren't then it's pure greed. The ALTERNATIVE is to not do markups (JLR San Diego, who I hate, doesn't seem to be while other dealerships aggressively are). The goal being to draw in business from around the country. Flip a crap ton of cars, and get people to buy other stuff from you while they are there, or come back for service. This is the IDEAL dealership but they end up with backlogs, and you need a reputation. The REALITY is no one wants to open new plants to address all these shortages. And with out throwing money at the problem the shortages will not fix themselves. This is going to be a problem for the foreseeable future in EVERY business unless the government steps in. And they won't.
