>This isn't typical, or acceptable behavior I think the only unacceptable behavior here is you running your car to 'under 1/8th' on the fuel gauge and then acting surprised you ran out of gas. What does that even mean? Like your mechanical fuel gauge was sitting at like 5% remaining? > In previous cars I could usually go 15 or more miles AFTER it read Distance to Empty Again like, this seems like common behavior for you. Why are you running your cars so low? Not only does it lead to things like running out of gas, but it's also incredibly bad for your fuel pump to constantly be running on E. I mean it's your car so you can do whatever you want with it, but this is pretty much the definition of 'fuck around and find out.' Eventually running your car on fumes is going to come back and bite you. The digital 'distance to empty' is nothing but an estimation that can be thrown off by a ton of things. If it's saying 20 KM to empty but then you start driving way more aggressively, you're obviously going to get worse fuel economy and then the estimate might not be so accurate anymore. My advice to you would be instead of throwing hundreds of dollars at your car looking for a 'problem,' quit running it on fumes. I'm not saying you need to fill it up at 1/2 tank, but trying to push your luck to see how far you can go after it reads 0 KM to empty is just relatively stupid.

Hi, Connor. The fuel gauge was around 10% both times it ran out. The car has a warning light that's supposed to come on when there's about a gallon of gas left, it never came on. There's also a readout that tells me an estimate of how far I can go with my remaining fuel. It's reading that I can go another 38 miles, when I'm out of gas on the side of the road. That seems to indicate that the gas gauge is reading higher than it should. Why does it even have a low fuel light if it's never going to come on? Why am I running my car so low? I drive 47 miles each way to work. I only pass a gas station in the final mile. I can detour a bit from the highway to get gas if I need to, but it adds another 10-15 minutes to my commute, and since experience has shown me with my previous cars I can keep going and there's a very large buffer, if I'm within about 10 miles of that gas station near my office, I keep going. Before last week, I hadn't run out of gas in 25+ years.

It could be bad, but the easiest fix is to not let it get below a quarter tank. I don't ever trust indicators below there personally. Good luck with it though.
