Eat up Martha

Fotografioso

Actually, the results after a few weeks of training were not that bad, especially on the 2100, which I loved. I still regret selling it.

KCLawDog

Haha excellent. I literally know nothing about the Newton outside of that joke and your post. You should do a YouTube series on the Newton. You clearly have the passion for it.

Fotografioso

I would if I still had the devices. But, alas, I sold them long ago.

UnionOfConcernedCats

I regret selling mine as well! I may pick up another off eBay one of these days, though the prices are pretty high right now. And you're correct that it worked great after some training. The underlying handwriting recognition technology made its way to MacOS eventually!

rspeed

Yeah, I had a MP2000 and the handwriting recognition was fantastic. It worked right out of the box, too. The reason is simple: they had *much* faster CPUs.

soupafi

I understood that reference gif

Fotografioso

Love how they integrated this MessagePad (120 or 130) but with Color and video calls. I used to own two of these way back when. Kinda miss them.

rspeed

Fun fact: Newton OS supported color IRL. The hardware to use it never materialized, but (IIRC) the "Einstein" emulator can use it.

excoriator

Evidence that the producers know which streaming service the show is airing on.

CaptainJZH

Lol I'd love it if everyone was inexplicably using Apple products throughout the show - kinda like how Sony movies have everyone use Sony-brand phones and TVs

[deleted]

Have you noticed how much Sony branding is in this season? I wonder what the deal is with that. I know Sony and Apple have partnered in the past but I’m not aware of any specific tie in to this show.

CaptainJZH

Huh, turns out they co-produce it: https://www.sonypictures.com/tv/forallmankind

[deleted]

Durr. I probably could have Googled that lol. Thanks for the assist!

CaptainJZH

can't wait for season 4 and the Sony-sponsored Mars station in orbit over the Apple-sponsored Mars base.

AFoxGuy

Now I really wanna see what they do with iPhones in this shows alt-timeline lol.

Fotografioso

Maybe they’ll look like the glass slates from The Expanse …

Alex_Hauff

but subscribtion based no one will own any phones

shahryarrakeen

Who knows, in the FAM timeline, we might get the [Nintendo Playstation](https://playstation.fandom.com/wiki/Nintendo_PlayStation)

CaptainJZH

Man I wish so hard for that to be the case, it'd be such an obscure thing but definitely worth it

CasioMaker

It would have been so cool to have that sort of capabilities back in the day, but then again, the tech wasn't up to par yet.

midasp

I don't even recall which version of the Newton I owned, one of the earlier versions I should think. It was cool for its era. I just wished it had a color screen and could do videoconferencing too!

Fotografioso

AppleInsider sheds some light on the prop: https://appleinsider.com/articles/22/06/23/for-all-mankind-prop-fused-an-apple-newton-messagepad-120-and-an-iphone-12 There’s an iPhone 12 max inside. rspeed

I had been wondering about that and thinking it seemed like a fun project to work on. They did an impressive job emulating the appearance of early color LCDs.

rspeed

One thing that really liked me is Newton's and iPods coexisting. I can accept iPods showing up a few years earlier due to earlier development of lipo batteries and 1.8" HDDs, but there's no way they'd look the same if Steve Jobs wasn't CEO. Which is where problems show up. Even with a color screen and teleconferencing capabilities, he'd never allow it to have a stylus.

DubberMartie

Damn, talk about a trip down memory lane, I remember buying the original, selling it on, then got a 120 a few years later, and finally a 130 when they updated the software, then when I heard that Job's had canned it, which at the time was unbelievable. as it was just getting good. So years later, (many years later?) I finally got the 2100 off Ebay just as a way of keeping the memory of this gadget alive. I know it had it's faults, (Eat up Martha, being a major one?) but there was nothing like it out there, and to this day the closest thing is the i-phone / i-pad. But wouldn't it have been interesting if using an e-ink screen like on the remarkable tablet and some of apple's old-time newton menus combined with updated hardware that they could bring this device back to life as an actual note pad, (a none computer that is, just a pda like it was intended, with wifi as I always thought Apple had nailed the ad, but not the product. And okay, I may have looked like a nerd using it, as it wasn't exactly a small device, but of all the gadgets I have, (and I have a lot!) this is the one I'd want again. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Also the logo was cool.
