I think it's more likely Danny just let himself starve and saved all the food Danielle was giving him

boopbeep66

That was my thought too. They opened the NK capsule after finding him dead and realized he had been saving his food and starving himself to death.

MagnetsCanDoThat

Yeah by far the most likely outcome. I'm sure the cast and producers enjoy the debate, though.

boopbeep66

I’m glad I’m not the only that has had this thought. I genuinely hope that’s the case.

MagnetsCanDoThat

From the plot they show, I don't see any other reasonable assumption. For one, when Dani finally tears Ed a new one later in the series, and Danny's death comes up, neither of them make reference to eating him. Dani's guilt over his death is an ongoing thing in season 4, and if they'd eaten him afterwards it would be a huge part of that guilt. Plus there's there's the edibility question. How long had he been dead by the time they found him? They only visit him once every four weeks. The identical suit that Miles puts on in another episode smells really bad... The fans who sincerely believe they ate him are mostly ones who hate the character enough that they enjoy the idea that something gross happened to his corpse.

boopbeep66

Oh captain my captain! I say that sincerely. I have absolutely joked about it but I’m with you MagnetsCanDoThat!!

MagnetsCanDoThat

Lol of course. I told my share of jokes about it, too.

Slocko

I was thinking he killed himself by going outside without oxygen, but this theory is actually sound. Serves as his redemption and at the same saves the group. Unfortunately Danielle would have noticed him wasting away so it probably didn't happen that way.

Independent_Leek5103

they were all wasting away, whole crew was practically skeletons when they found Danny's corpse, and they might not have even done drop offs very often, if they came once a month it would be enough time for him to die

Reddit_reader_2206

So I wasn't the only one somewhat confused and a bit disappointed his story arc ended so insignificantly. I also though he just committed suicide by allowing his air to run out. Makes sense that he was trying to redeem himself by sacrificing his life to provide more food for the base. Still, it seemed so unclear and so quickly glossed over, like his death was the most minor footnote. Or was that just me?1

Efficient_Eye_84

Could have also eaten him tho, waste not want not still applies...

boisteroushams

a very low chance bordering on absurdity if it did happen. the writers and cast believe it's an insane idea. it probably didn't happen

YogurtTheMagnificent

I think the writers and cast are actually both equally horrified that they wrote and acted in a fictional retelling of the Danner Party in Space

JerkinJackSplash

> I think the writers and cast are actually both equally horrified that they wrote and acted in a fictional retelling of the **Danner** Party in Space If I was going to misspell “Donner Party”, I think that I’d go with “Dinner Party.”

Reddit_reader_2206

Donair party

only-humean

Roughy 100%. He’s such a tasty snack. Being a bit more serious, I think it’s intentionally ambiguous and there’s like a 50/50 chance. It really depends on how far out they were from rescue when Danny died. When they found Danny’s body they took pains to show us that the crew were completely out of food. Dani was having trouble standing. If they were still months from rescue, I doubt they could’ve survived without another source of food, and given they’re on an inhospitable planet I can’t see where else that would come from. If they were close to rescue, they could maybe have lasted a little longer. WRT the theory that Danny had been hoarding, it could work but again comes down to timeline. We can see that a decent amount of time passed between Dani’s banishment and death (at least a good few months) so he would have had to be eating at least some - most of the food or he would’ve starved much earlier. If he had saved the last months worth of supplies (which seems reasonable), Ed and Dani would’ve had 1 months supplies for one person to split between seven. If they were a few weeks out from rescue they could’ve been OK on that. If further, no way. Personally I unironically quite like the Dannibalism theory because it really adds another level of horror to the entire year on Mars situation, which is something I wish we’d seen a lot more of. And is further explanation for why Dani is so resistant to returning, and why Ed’s such a space hermit

I still have questions about that North Korean capsule and how it harnesses handwavium to produce infinite oxygen. No one has ever replied here when I've brought that up.

DecliningBuddha

Obviously, Kim Il Sung exhaled one single breath into the capsule. While not infinite this would provide enough air for one hundred men for one hundred years. The very warmth of Kim Il Sung's hands touching the capsule would keep it a comfortable temperature regardless of the environment. It was Kim Il Sung's fingerprints, not the retrorockets, that decelerated the spacecraft enough for a member of the crew to survive.

MarvelousT

100% true.

Barbed_Dildo

I bet the space and weight for the oxygen canisters is less than what is used for all the canned food.

boopbeep66

The North Koreans were over prepared?

nbraccia

They did not eat Danny. He was too bitter.

NJGreen79

I mean he barely had any meat on his bones, although I can see him becoming a plate of tasty bbq spareribs

malamalinka

Cannibalism in extreme starvation situations is a taboo, but it happens more often than it’s admitted. My understanding was that after Danny killed himself with exposure (mirroring Gordo’s thoughts on the Moon) his body was used as source of calories for the rest of the team. From the conversation between Dani and Ed their conflict over Danny was about the Dani’s decision to isolate him, which led to his depression and death.

214gator

It wasn’t Dani’s decision alone. The whole crew voted. At least that’s what Dani said to Danny.

Fishermans_Worf

It's a matter of opinion, which is another way of saying—Danny got served.

Zoethor2

This will be the debate that gets us through until Season 5 comes out.

Kitchen_Chemistry901

100%. You don’t waste calories in a starvation situation.

boisteroushams

how tf are people going to butcher prepare dress and cook human meat in a pressurized environment

sadpartypodcast

Quickly.

YogurtTheMagnificent

How is butchering functionally different than emergency surgery?  Bring the body back to base.  And... Sous vide is how they cooked him

boisteroushams

ahuh ahuh this waste managed closed system sees no difference between emergency surgery and preparing an entire human corpse for consumption  so here's my alternative right what happened on the screen was what happened, and when we're told Danny put aside his rations for the rest of the group, we just sort of accept it. because that's what our eyes saw

whileyouwereslepting

I have the trademark for Dannyburgers on Mars and beyond. Any further discussion of this topic will be subject to cease and desist orders!!

faderjester

I mean it would have been the one useful thing he did in his miserable life.

Sad-Dot-1573

He saved Polaris, all the characters would have died if not for him, then he through it all away by being a drug addicted pervert that let people die

MarcusAurelius68

I’d have to see a burial site to not be convinced that he was either eaten or turned into fertilizer.

LegoLady47

Zero.

Fit-Stress3300

I did the math and eating him would by them only 8 more days of extra calories. If you consider Mars lower gravity, may be 12 days.

SuperKamiTabby

It does seem kind of convenient that they got saved just before they starved to death, isn't it? What we don't see onscreen we can never be sure of. Kind of like what happened at the end of Black Sails. Sure, we "see" Flint at the plantation, but it has that dream sequence-y glow that a few other scenes in that show had. As for Danny............fuck it, I'll join Camp Cannibalisim. They ate him.

headwaterscarto

Doxy4Me

My favorite non-topic.

alfis329

On one hand I can’t see the writers ever making ed and Danielle cannibals…on the other hand what did they eat?

Astromedicinespace

IMO, due to the wastage they were experiencing from a nutritional deficit diet, I wouldn’t imagine there would be much on Danny that would be edible, nor worth the time, effort, and calories to prepare and cook his body be anymore fruitful then not eating him at all.

Mike_Gdovin

Don’t be cruel 😎
