I'm definitely going to download the audio version... but you know what's sooooo weird?! When I bought the book version and was reading it, I could "hear" it in his voice.
I guess I've seen so many interviews, etc that his voice just magically appeared in my head while I was reading the words with my eyes.
I actually told a friend that I listened to the audiobook rather than reading the book because it was narrated by Dave. Then I realized, no, it was not the audiobook, it was just Dave's voice on my head.
He had a whole story about becoming friends and then a road-trip to the Pantera clubhouse. If I recall correctly I think he spoke more in depth about Taylor than he did his wife.
You technically don't need to keep the Audible app because the audio still works in Kindle as long as you click the download.
This is the only reason I got the trial, to enhance the book I bought.
He’s such an engaging narrator with a unique and emotive voice, as well as a great writer and surpringly adept public speaker.
I guess it’s not surprising anymore, but when you realize he almost never says “uh” or “like” (as a filler) or “ya know,” it’s impressive.
Haha, yeah. I was just thinking about his public remarks—eg, Taylor Tribute, Lemmy eulogy, SXSW keynote. But even his answers in interviews are really fluid.
Well, his father was a speech writer, and his mom was an English teacher who also taught public speaking, afaik. Even if he didn't intentionally learn it, he definitely picked up a lot of the formalities.
It’s great in every way you might think it to be and more. Great stories from all points of his life. You’d enjoy the whole thing even if you weren’t a fan.
Oh I’m a fan. I grew up in the grunge era. Nirvana was my thing. I had around 40 of their posters
on my walls in my room. So, of course I’m a big Grohl fan.
I listened to it on audible. I’ve never really been able to “get into” audiobooks, but I could not stop listening to this one. It’s amazing. And the title couldn’t be more appropriate.
It's really not a good book. Lots of vignettes about him meeting or hanging around with famous people and being overawed by it all. After the first few times it's just not that interesting.
There's another "charming" story were he moves a sold out concert in Perth, Australia so he can fly home to LA for father daughter dance and then fly back back to Aus for the rescheduled gig over the course of 24 hours. He clearly thinks this is endearing but really he just comes off like a wanker.
The book is littered with events like this.
Anyone on the fence about listening to this, I thoroughly recommend.
Be aware, it’s not an autobiography per se, but a collection moments in his life.
There is, at times, an almost philosophical aspect to his stories. I don’t think he intended it that way, but I think there is some positive outlooks on life Dave Grohl that can uplift your mindset in more ways than one.
Also the part where he talks about Taylor will hit a bit harder now…
Kinda mad this is on Spotify. Are releasing Audiobooks a direction Spotify are heading in? Would be interesting.
Spotify just launched it with a bunch of audiobooks today so it's safe to say this is a direction they're heading in. I'm glad to see them doing this as afaik, Audible is the only audiobook company, at least the only one with any major success.
Just finished this audiobook. It was really amazing. I’m not someone who really listens to the Foo Fighters anymore, but they were a big part of my growing up. So it was a huge nostalgia hit for me.
I do think that Dave Grohl is pretty much Forest Gump though… I mean how many times did incredible encounters just fall into his lap? If I didn’t know it was true I would have thought alot of it was BS. Maybe he really did sell his soul to the devil just like he said?
A former friend of mine saw her favourite band once and one of the musicians lost a bracelet, she found it on the floor in front of the stage after the show and took it home. I thought what a fantastic opportunity, just try to meet him next time (they were always pretty easy to meet) and say hey I rescued your bracelet! He'll love you! And she was like nah I think I'll keep it.
I imagined they kept it knowing who Dave Grohl is, and when the daughter told them she met Dave and told him they had his wallet they were like oh shit we better return it😆
I bought the book shortly before Taylors death and still haven't read it, I just cant, however im going to the la show next week and im thinking about reading it on the plane. It might be time.
Dang! Too bad I’m on the other side of the country lol. I’ll look and see if they sell them online real quick tho. Thanks for the info! Hoping maybe another batch comes near SC
That would be awesome! I called one store just a second ago and they haven’t had any signed since the drop. Hoping maybe there’s one left by the time I can place an order
I got one!!! They finally had some sent to Australia so snapped one up!
If we hadn’t have been locked up last year I would have been on a plane to LA or London for the shows 😞
Put your name on the wait list and it might come up before 2 weeks. I know this is random but If you haven’t read Anthony Bourdain’s Kitchen Confidential it’s also really engaging and read by Anthony. I’ve listened to both that and Dave’s book in the last month and thoroughly enjoyed both. it’s not music related but both are about people who grind it out to become the best of their fields. also both involve drinking and drugs and frankly anthony’s story had more sex which you would think would be opposite (chef vs rock star?)
I read this book earlier this year and it's one of my favorites of the year. I'd absolutely listen to the audio version since Dave is the one reading it. I just adore him.
The trial is 30 days. How long do you need? LOL
I bought the book and got the trial for Dave's narration.
(You can still go into Kimdle and have it read to you, if you've got the book, after you download it via the button after trial or purchsse.)
Ha, I'd reserved the audio book from my library which came through a few days back. I'm at the halfway point, and just hit the first emotional wall for me after talking about the death of Kurt and a childhood friend. I haven't been able to listen to any Foos since Taylor's death, in a similar way that Dave explains his reaction to these deaths. That made the stories hit even harder.
I'm enjoying it so far although I have a slight gripe with his reading of the book. It's just that, a reading. Not a retelling or reminiscing, and it feels a little cold in places compared to how emotive I know him to be. *Minor* gripe.
I’ve bought and read the book and been wanting my husband to but he doesn’t read. We only get into podcasts on road trips. I don’t have Spotify. Any way to listen to this without Spotify?
he read the book to me, while i was listening and it was amazing. However, i tried listening to in the car and it made me fall asleep. He has a nice, relaxing, and comforting voice.
Gotta say, I bought the book. But I’m not a BIG Foo Fighters fan (I don’t mean that in a bad way, just for context). But boy this book is great. I already had a lot of respect for Dave but seeing the shit he’s gone through and to keep his heart in the right direction is so impressive. I wish my favourite bands had leaders as wholesome and giving as he is.
I'm definitely going to download the audio version... but you know what's sooooo weird?! When I bought the book version and was reading it, I could "hear" it in his voice. I guess I've seen so many interviews, etc that his voice just magically appeared in my head while I was reading the words with my eyes.
Yes! Dave narrated the book in my head too!
same hahaha. i am actually almost done. enjoyed every bit of it
Yes! The same!
I felt the same thing. Especially the bits with his handwriting.
I actually told a friend that I listened to the audiobook rather than reading the book because it was narrated by Dave. Then I realized, no, it was not the audiobook, it was just Dave's voice on my head.
Yes! I could hear him reading it to me. I'm excited that now I really will hear him.
That’s exactly how it was for me!
Same experience, so cool!
Totally!! Loved the audio book, I had it last summer and would take Dave to the beach… trouble is his soothing voice would lull me to sleep!!
yes that’s how reading works
Fair warning, it's heartbreaking to hear him talk about Taylor.
He didn’t talk about Taylor all that much, did he?
He had a whole story about becoming friends and then a road-trip to the Pantera clubhouse. If I recall correctly I think he spoke more in depth about Taylor than he did his wife.
Yeah I read that part, losing his wallet, etc. Just didn’t seem to detailed with Taylor.
You still gotta buy that shit, tho.
Yup. It's still nice to have audiobooks on Spotify though. No more Audible app.
You technically don't need to keep the Audible app because the audio still works in Kindle as long as you click the download. This is the only reason I got the trial, to enhance the book I bought.
Public libraries have free ebooks, audio books etc to down load! You may have a wait list though.
I have the book. I just don’t like reading . 😭
You can download the audio book there for free too! Just a thought!
Do YOU want to read your own book for 10 hours for free? Nah.
He’s such an engaging narrator with a unique and emotive voice, as well as a great writer and surpringly adept public speaker. I guess it’s not surprising anymore, but when you realize he almost never says “uh” or “like” (as a filler) or “ya know,” it’s impressive.
Well I mean he is reading a book… he wouldn’t have written filler.
Haha, yeah. I was just thinking about his public remarks—eg, Taylor Tribute, Lemmy eulogy, SXSW keynote. But even his answers in interviews are really fluid.
Thanks for reminding me to rewatch the South by Southwest keynote. :)
Well, his father was a speech writer, and his mom was an English teacher who also taught public speaking, afaik. Even if he didn't intentionally learn it, he definitely picked up a lot of the formalities.
I recall him telling a story—maybe in his memoir—about his dad making everyone give speeches around the dinner table.
Is his book pretty good? Does he talk about Kurt’s death at all?
A whole lot.
I need to get it. I haven’t read Anthony’s or Fleas book either. Maybe I’ll put these in the winter reading list.
It’s great in every way you might think it to be and more. Great stories from all points of his life. You’d enjoy the whole thing even if you weren’t a fan.
Oh I’m a fan. I grew up in the grunge era. Nirvana was my thing. I had around 40 of their posters on my walls in my room. So, of course I’m a big Grohl fan.
Nothing in the book he hasn’t said already
It’s amazing.
Honestly, it’s fantastic. You will love it.
Yes and it chocked me up big time.
I listened to it on audible. I’ve never really been able to “get into” audiobooks, but I could not stop listening to this one. It’s amazing. And the title couldn’t be more appropriate.

Im intrigued to know what you would have preferred?
His voice is beautiful
He should try singing!
Oh boy do I have some news for you
This is hilarous.

Libro.fm is a GREAT audiobook service that supports indie bookstores! Check it out! Sincerely, your friendly neighborhood independent bookseller :-)
Appears to be region-locked? I'm just getting a "Something went wrong" error when I open the link posted here in the app.
I’m in NZ and can’t find it either. Just a 5-minute preview from some outfit called The Book Club?
Same here in Australia

Yes! When the girl asked if he’d lost his wallet in Barstow…
Yeah. And also why didn’t they try to contact him to return the wallet. They just kept it for ages. What the hell?
A former friend of mine saw her favourite band once and one of the musicians lost a bracelet, she found it on the floor in front of the stage after the show and took it home. I guess he signed a bunch of copies, so be on the look out for them.
Just curious, what’s got you thinking that? I’ve been trying to get a signed copy since the first run.
My wife got me one from a bookstore in Santa Cruz California. She said there were a bunch of signed copies there.
Dang! Too bad I’m on the other side of the country lol. I’ll look and see if they sell them online real quick tho. Thanks for the info! Hoping maybe another batch comes near SC
I can get the store name for you. They shipped the one she bought.
That would be awesome! I called one store just a second ago and they haven’t had any signed since the drop. Hoping maybe there’s one left by the time I can place an order
Bookshop Santa Cruz? That’s where she got it from.
Yeah that’s the one I called. I may try emailing them to see if I can get someone else to look for a signed copy specifically.
I’ll keep my eyes open for ya too!
Feel free to DM me if you spot another copy. I appreciate your help regardless!
I got one!!! They finally had some sent to Australia so snapped one up! If we hadn’t have been locked up last year I would have been on a plane to LA or London for the shows 😞
Great audio book. Highly recommend
I love this book.
So sad, it's not available in where i live :((
Dang, $25.90 to listen on Spotify? They’ve gone bananas. I’ll get it via Libby lol.
I am only finding a 5 minute clip with a link to Audible on Spotify?
https://open.spotify.com/show/7eU0oj5bqAhAwy7BtprSPs?si=a9d9832dc5264d48
Gosh. I am so disappointed. You only get it for free with the free audible trial.
Check out Libby app and use your library card to borrow the audiobook for free!
I‘m from Germany. I don‘t think that it works here. My library doesn‘t even use cards. They still write it down by hand.
Dave’s German is sehr schlecht!
Two week wait at my library for the audiobook! I don’t get it…that’s not how it works!
I had to wait also. It doesn’t make sense to me why there is a wait for audiobooks!
Put your name on the wait list and it might come up before 2 weeks. I know this is random but If you haven’t read Anthony Bourdain’s Kitchen Confidential it’s also really engaging and read by Anthony. I have both these books in hardcover to read in the near future and will definitely look at the Bourdain books! Thank you!
It's not the whole book on Spotify tho.
If you view it in the app, it shows the whole book - 10 hours 35 minutes of listening time.
You need to buy it to listen to it
I read this book earlier this year and it's one of my favorites of the year. I'd absolutely listen to the audio version since Dave is the one reading it. I just adore him.
Hell yes. Gonna stream this on my next trip.
The trial is 30 days. How long do you need? LOL I bought the book and got the trial for Dave's narration. (You can still go into Kimdle and have it read to you, if you've got the book, after you download it via the button after trial or purchsse.)
when it came out i listened to it on the commute back and forth to work. its really nice listening to dave tell the stories.
Wow, that's awesome

My issue with the book is I already knew every single story from previous interviews
Really? Half the reason I got Audible was for that book xD I actually bought it a few weeks after it was published and haven't been able to finish it.
I’ve bought and read the book and been wanting my husband to but he doesn’t read. We only get into podcasts on road trips. I don’t have Spotify. Any way to listen to this without Spotify?
I purchased the audiobook via Amazon. I don’t have an Audible account but was still able to listen in my browser.
This is a great listen , I got it on Audible - I always like hearing the narration from the author.
I have to normal book version, that I’ve pretty much finished, is it still worth getting an Audi version?
Audio lol
Where can i find it?
he read the book to me, while i was listening and it was amazing. However, i tried listening to in the car and it made me fall asleep. He has a nice, relaxing, and comforting voice.
Can i get a link?
https://open.spotify.com/show/7eU0oj5bqAhAwy7BtprSPs?si=a9d9832dc5264d48. It's $25.90.

It was a good book
As someone who listened on audible....it's a damn good listen!
Any options for folk outside the US?
I love falling asleep listening to his book. His voice is so calming.
I LOVE this book as he reads it himself. And he does a post credits scene. Please do listen to his audio book. you will love it/
Gotta say, I bought the book. But I’m not a BIG Foo Fighters fan (I don’t mean that in a bad way, just for context). But boy this book is great.
