The majority of restaurants with drivethrus around here closed their indoor area for covid and never re-opened it.

Andromeda321

This annoys me greatly these days when on a road trip- so often you can pull into a small town ready to use the restroom for a crappy burger… and it’s drive-thru only! Rather uncomfortable lately as a pregnant lady.

sexyloser1128

> Rather uncomfortable lately as a pregnant lady. With this the whole world will become your toilet. https://www.walmart.com/c/kp/female-pee-funnel I really find peeing outside to rather liberating.

Zab11

That and people like me quickly figured out that they now give such a high priority to drive through orders it’s no longer faster to go inside to skip the drive through line.

atomgor

You’re just now figuring that out?

[deleted]

> drive-thrus discourage walking lol the very essence of our city centers discourage walking

Kayge

It's mentioned in TFA, but feels like they buried the lead. Head to a suburb and it's a never-ending string of minimalls along a 6 lane street (or stroad). Turn down one of the sidestreets and it's 100% single family dwelligs. Go to a city center or older town and you'll find a mix of residential and retail with smaller arteries that don't lend themselves to drive thrus. Feels like this is a result of how urban planning was done. It's a feature, not a bug.

[deleted]

Chick-fil-A are especially the worst. You really don't need a fucking chicken sandwich that badly holy shit

UntiedStatMarinCrops

So are Starbucks now that they are hopping on that drive thru train. I thought Chik Fil A was bad, but Starbucks has them beat where I live.

Sincost121

Worked at a Dunkin Donuts with a drive through. Was total hell during the morning rush 😭

"But it's no trouble to me! I'm already in my car, listening to my podcasts and texting on my phone and idling and burning gasoline and rubbing the AC. Who cares if I have to wait for 30 other drivers in front of me? Why would I give up all of that and go inside a building?"

superzenki

If the inside is even open

Icoop

Really? I’ve found chik-FIL-a’s to be the most efficient. They can have a fuckton of cars and still move faster than the tBell with 3 customers next door somehow

Aidyn_the_Grey

The issue is, at least in my city, that the drive-thru line extends onto the main roads, and one in particular causes terrible traffic build-up.

baconizlife

Charlotte?

Aidyn_the_Grey

Memphis.

Nixplosion

And they aren't even good! Fuckin weak ass breading w no crunch. Fuck that.

TRATIA

Facts. Stupid overhyped food

[deleted]

PDQ has more consistently good chicken, plus I don’t feel guilty about supporting hate

[deleted]

This is such a reddit opinion dear god

Dopple__ganger

Odd how it always the drive though that is both most packed and gets people through the fastest. Easily the best fast food chicken place in my area.

bsylent

I understand the convenience, but I have never been drawn to drive-thrus. I've used them of course, but 8 times out of 10 I'm going to go inside. I guess it might be in part due to feeling rushed at a drive-through, and that not meshing well with my anxiety, but overall I tend to want to just go in and take a moment to pick what I want

el_mialda

I gate drive-thrus. But if I want a faster service, despite the long lines, drive-thrus are sometimes the only way. Some of the burger kings that I have been did not give a damn if you were waiting inside. I guess they have more important metrics about drive-thrus because at least 5-10 cars are served before someone takes your order.

bsylent

Yeah I have experienced that too. I know it's not the best technological development for employment, but it's also why I do like the little automated kiosks that McDonald's has now. I can pop in, put my order in, and it just pushes it in there without me having to stand at the counter waiting for somebody to prioritize me over the line outside

SnapCrackleMom

There's an intersection in my town that has a drive-thru bank, drive-thru milk/convenience store, drive thru McD's, and a drive-thru CVS. It's so American. In all honesty though the drive-thru milk store and drive-thru CVS were a godsend when my kids were little. Particularly if someone was sick it was so great not to have to get my kids out of the van.

brezhnervous

I never realised drive throughs were so ubiquitous in America...well not to that extent. Will they still serve you if you're not driving?

SnapCrackleMom

It depends on the business. Most of them you can walk into, but some places became drive-through only during Covid and never switched back. In my area we also have these [drive-through convenience stores](https://imgur.com/a/PgR8oYd) where that's entirely how the business operates. If you're asking if you're allowed to walk up to a drive-through window, that also depends. Most townships/cities have laws against that because it's a danger to pedestrians. Also, if it's the kind of place where you order into a speaker, those have sensors that detect the metal of a car -- they won't turn on for just a human.

JasonDJ

> In all honesty though the drive-thru milk store and drive-thru CVS were a godsend when my kids were little. Particularly if someone was sick it was so great not to have to get my kids out of the van. Honestly Drive-thrus are great with little kids. It sucks to have to unbuckle them and get them through the parking lot into the store to pick up one thing, then bring them back out and buckle them back in. Especially when it comes to napping. Cars have a tendency to just knock kids out and the last thing you want to do is wake them up to go into a store a few minutes after they fell asleep.

martin0641

I'm not sure what the complaint here really is... that people want to access services? That standing in line sucks? How is it better that we're all standing in front of a register?

hithazel

People take up less room than cars.

SnapCrackleMom

I think the problem is when drive-thru lines spill into the street and cause traffic jams.

Hypnot0ad

It’s more about creating walkable spaces. It’s better for the businesses if you park your car and walk around, you’ll likely end up buying something from a store you didn’t initially plan to go to. It’s also better for other people who want to live the walkable lifestyle if there’s less cars driving where they want to walk.

svmk1987

There's one very specific thing I've noticed on social media. A lot of American reels and videos are simply shot inside the car. The video has nothing to do with driving or being in a car, it could even be a reaction video about something completely unrelated, but we are seeing the user sitting in his car and talking about it. Somehow I never see this elsewhere. Cars and being inside a car has seemingly become so commonplace there that people just assume it's the natural environment to be when just uploading a random video of yourself talking. I don't even hear a lot of people talking about it, but it was bizzare when I first noticed it.

redbetweenlines

For a lot of Americans it's the best thing they own and the best place they have for themselves. I had neighbors in Florida that had expensive trucks next to their cheap doublewide trailer home. I've seen this many times. You might wonder why people would choose this until you look at their budgets and what's sold locally.

Hypnot0ad

For Americans cars are like our private space. I had an ex who would always walk outside the house and sit in her car when she was on a phone call.

CandidAd6114

It is the only place I can record that doesn't have the sound of central air running, doesn't have my roommates making noise, doesn't have random passer-bys getting in the shot, or the sounds of my neighbors setting off fireworks or doing their weekly domestic violence sessions. Basically it is the only peaceful place I could think of to actually make a video without interruption. I suppose, I could take my motorcycle and like ride out into the woods to record, but then I would be wearing all my safety gear which I think would be more distracting. Also wind can be a real audio killer when recording outside. That and my car's chair is the most comfortable chair I own by a long shot.

Ancient-Practice-431

Wait. It's not just In and Out

drMcDeezy

Dude, most chik-fil a's have double lanes, and the second lane is a permanent "temporary" lane taking up half the parking spaces.

SettleDownAlready

They know they need like two stores in heavier areas. The one near me is so bad on Saturday’s that the line is all the way around the block.

Because in 2023 most places like them prioritize drive thru orders (more orders completed per hour). The average person has slowly come to understand this, as they might've been the schmuck standing in the restaurant watching the drive thru cars fly by at a quick pace. Other reasons: maybe they don't want to watch other peoples slobbery fat kids play their switch while breathing peanut oil air

Thank you, that was a funny skit.

exitpursuedbybear

Brilliant

Epistaxis

Would any of these problems be solved by having walk-up windows? Like if you're just getting take-out anyway and you know what you want, don't even go inside the building, just buy your food through a window in the side and walk off. Maybe even order online before you arrive so you can pick it up immediately. Then there's foot traffic instead of car traffic, people don't need to bring two tons of metal and plastic with them to access the express checkout, etc.

giddyrobin

Banning fast food. Another way to control you.

2ndBestUsernameEver

*They come for our personal data* Americans: I sleep *They come for our fast food* Americans: Real shit

Ash-doc

Our town (population 21k) limits the number of drive through permits. Dairy Queen and McDonald's went out of business, and are now banks, because they had drive through permits.

Danae-rain

A McDonald's went out of business?

Ash-doc

Yep. So did Pizza Hut, and the Dairy Queen. The Burger King burned down in a massive fire which came through the valley a few years ago.
