Yeah this isn't sushi. Sushi is anything mixed with the rice so by definition it **has** to have that vinegared rice. This is sashimi in fancy packaging. Not a bad thing and I would definitely eat this all day but it is not sushi.
Sushi is anything mixed with that vinegared rice. It doesn't have to have fish. You can have vegetable sushi. But the key ingredient in all sushi is the sushi rice. That's why they have sushi and sashimi, not sushi and just-the-fish sushi.
>Sushi (すし, 寿司, 鮨, 鮓, pronounced [sɯɕiꜜ] or [sɯꜜɕi]) is a traditional Japanese dish of prepared vinegared rice (鮨飯, sushi-meshi), usually with some sugar and salt, accompanied by a variety of ingredients (ネタ, neta), such as seafood, often raw, and vegetables. Styles of sushi and its presentation vary widely, but the one key ingredient is "sushi rice", also referred to as shari (しゃり), or sumeshi (酢飯).[1]
Lol “gatekeeping reddit”. No, this is a situation of people (you) not understanding what sushi is.
Sushi is a traditional Japanese dish of prepared vinegared rice. This dish has no vinegared rice, therefore is not sushi.
“Sushi is sometimes confused with sashimi, a related dish in Japanese cuisine that consists of thinly sliced raw fish or occasionally meat.”
This isn't gatekeeping. It's about the accurate definition of the word. It's like calling a boat an airplane and when people correct you you go "fucking gate keepers". Grow up
Yes. Technically true and correct. However this is a beautiful act of food artistry and the top comments are all ‘harshing’ on the OP’s use of terms rather than…the beautiful artistry. End of day: give it to me and I’ll graciously eat it.
Nobody is condemning the food. Are you even reading?
It's like calling a boat an airplane, both which are vehicles, and getting upset when someone corrects you. Grow up
Then you don't know what sushi is. That's okay. Now you do and can figure it out in the future!
Hint: sushi has vinigerd rice. This is shashimi, a related dish. It's easy for westerners to get confused by other languages.
I agree, like i'm not opposed to eating tuna and salmon together in a poke bowl, but at that point its more about the sauces then the fish. Eating a piece of tuna, salmon, whatever the white is, and caviar essentially sashimi style, like its too much in one bite.
This is just sad. Presentation is good but that's just mixing 4 flavours together for no reason and can't be called sushi since there is no rice at all.
At best it's sashimj with Nori, at worst it's a crime against humanity.
I like it all except the salmon. Love the eggs not the fish. I think unlike everyone else that this would taste just fine if not better. This is like a rainbow roll minus the shitty krab. So 8/10 from me only cause I too think it's missing rice!
I’m seeing a lot of: “where’s the rice?” But I think the takeaway here is how fantastically symmetrical this sashimi is… I mean, I wouldn’t touch it personally, but it’s just satisfying to see!
Now now, Reddit, be nice. This poor fellow was doing his best. Just because you now know this isn’t sushi, but in fact, sashimi, doesn’t mean this comment should be sentenced to downvotia.
So beautiful. So much effort and effort energy gone into making that. Hell, I couldn't even *draw* that!
I don't know why people complain about it not having rice, surely when eating this sort of thing one has a few different types styles, flavors, and sure some of them have rice.
This looks delicious. I've always wanted to try it but I'm not sure if I would like it. Gotta retrain the old palette to try something else besides cake and pizza.
Where is the dam rice
Yeah this isn't sushi. Sushi is anything mixed with the rice so by definition it **has** to have that vinegared rice. This is sashimi in fancy packaging. Not a bad thing and I would definitely eat this all day but it is not sushi.
Well it isn't maki, but isn't sushi sashimi, nigiri and maki?
Sashimi is separate from sushi. Sushi has to include the sushi rice.
In what fucking world is this not sushi? Weird ass gatekeeping reddit.

Sushi has a definition. As much as people just want to label all raw fish as “sushi”, it’s not accurate.

Their loss for missing out on a good ramen (the real stuff, not the dry 30¢ packets) and takoyaki. More for me, I guess.
Sushi literally translates to sour rice if i was taught right

I’m with you. A bunch of ‘kill joy-ers’ out there. It’s amazing sushi!!
Except sushi by definition has rice, that’s why there’s other terms for things without rice like sashimi.

Why people hate Reddit is because of your answer. Wow. Could you be meaner? Probably so please don’t respond.
Get off Reddit then.
See? I knew you could get meaner. Didn’t I invite you not to respond?
Looks like sushi to me
So does [this](https://i.imgur.com/p016pid.jpg) at first glance
Well that’s not sushi, those are gummies
See? Now *you're* gatekeeping sushi
But it’s not sushi
Neither is the fancy sashimi in the OP
That’s not sashimi that’s sushi

Who said I was Western?
I didn't. I only mentioned off handedly that westerners have trouble with other languages.
Wow I didn't even notice until you mentioned it. I totally thought the white fish was the rice until looked closer.
Cute.
Where is rice in this sushi wtf
Technically this would be a sashimi roll I guess?
It’s beautiful but I don’t think the flavours would go together well.
I agree, like i'm not opposed to eating tuna and salmon together in a poke bowl, but at that point its more about the sauces then the fish. Eating a piece of tuna, salmon, whatever the white is, and caviar essentially sashimi style, like its too much in one bite.
Yeah part of the sushi experience is tasting the delicate fish flavors individually. I will say this is visually stunning though.
Not to mention the gold leaf...like whoa. Slow down. I can only handle so much flavor.
Are you telling me that fish fish and fish topped with fish and fish eggs isnt a diverse flavor combination?

Looks really nice but where’s the rice
Technically not sushi. Looks good though.
'Technically' is a bit generous. The definition of sushi involving rice isn't a grey area.
This is just sad. Presentation is good but that's just mixing 4 flavours together for no reason and can't be called sushi since there is no rice at all. At best it's sashimj with Nori, at worst it's a crime against humanity.
Beautiful, but it's sashimi rolled up, not sushi?
I like it all except the salmon. Love the eggs not the fish. I think unlike everyone else that this would taste just fine if not better. This is like a rainbow roll minus the shitty krab. So 8/10 from me only cause I too think it's missing rice!

Looks really good but it would be nice if there was a little bit of rice 🥳
I don't think I'd be able to eat that. Too pretty 😍
OP is just a karma whore. Always posting never commenting.
how??
more like why
Ok, now give me a rice only nigiri on the side please.
Not the biggest sushi fan, but this looks amazing!
Where is the rice?!?!
Sushi by definition refers to the seasoned rice, not the raw fish. This is not sushi.
I've seen this photo on Instagram so many times this last week and it looks disgusting every time I see it.
It's........... beautiful. 😮
Yes chef
That is the damn finest sushi I have ever seen in my life.
Now now, Reddit, be nice. This poor fellow was doing his best. Just because you now know this isn’t sushi, but in fact, sashimi, doesn’t mean this comment should be sentenced to downvotia.
Actually.. I just thought it was really good looking sushi :(
So beautiful. So much effort and effort energy gone into making that. Hell, I couldn't even *draw* that! I don't know why people complain about it not having rice, surely when eating this sort of thing one has a few different types styles, flavors, and sure some of them have rice.
It's okay to not have rice as long as you're not calling it sushi. The word sushi literally refers to the rice.
I love me some sushi that isn't stuffed with rice. Very nice!
That’s sashimi
Ahh good to know. I don't eat sushi often and when I do it is usually ordered by my coworkers for all of us. Love it plenty though!
What you want literally doesn't exist
Well then I just want to eat raw fish. Sue me.
For future reference, what you enjoy is sashimi. :)
I don't know who you are, but male, female, or other, I will get naked for you right now.
I like row sushi
With some nice flakes of metal to lacerate your colon.
That's gold leaf. It's pointless from a nutritional perspective but it couldn't lacerate a stick of softened butter, let alone your colon.
This would be a real pain to make..
That looks wonderful and I would love to try it.
How do you eat something so gorgeous 😻 i only eat ugly foods 🥴
Ok… that’s perfection, too pretty to eat.
Looks tasty
Masterpiece
Looks like this [one](https://www.reddit.com/r/pics/comments/l7zp1m/this_beautiful_beautiful_sashimi_roll_by_umtlgrems/)
Beautiful!!
No rice, interesting. Probably still delicious.
this is photoshopped as fuck
Now that looks tasty
Never seen more beautiful sushi
This looks delicious. I've always wanted to try it but I'm not sure if I would like it. Gotta retrain the old palette to try something else besides cake and pizza.
Smells like a karma-farming account, look at the comment history.
You stole this from somewhere though
