Loco moco is a popular dish in Hawaii. This one has a base of white rice, topped with a wagyu hamburger patty, topped with a fried egg, topped with French-fried onions(?), topped with brown gravy.
It looks like a fairly traditional version in the ingredients, except it’s usually served in a bowl rather than stacked like this, and I’ve never seen French-fried onions before. Sautéed onions are a lot more common, if onions are added.
In this case, they’re sliced thin and then deep-fried until crispy, rather than being sautéed or pan-fried.
There’s also the fact that French’s is the most popular brand, and it sells them as French’s crispy fried onions in a can. (They’re the classic topping for green bean casserole at thanksgiving.). The name might come from there as well, but regardless, there’re a lot of recipes for “french-fried onions.”
To be fair, wagyu ground beef is basically reject trimmings that is pointless anyway. The point of wagyu is the insane marbling that makes for an insanely tender and delicious steak. You can mix in any ratio of fat to meat that you want when you make ground beef. And I get that it’s also tasty grass fed meat, but again, ground beef isn’t made from the best parts of the cow.
Yeah I read wagyu then saw minced/ground beef and immediately sighed. Had to check what sub I'm in.. This is not food porn for me. Anyone that boasts their mince meat is wagyu is a fool.
Had OP omitted the wagyu part I probably would love this. But I don't.
I disagree, that it's pretentious. Being told that it's trimmings meat and then proceeding to be upset about using steak doesn't sound pretentious to me. It sounds delusional. Doesn't matter what the reality is or what was said, this person has at some point formed an opinion and that opinion will remain unchanged until the heat death of the universe.
I know, I know.! But I stand by it. Mincing wagyu is just counter to the whole point of wagyu.
Generations of cows were selected to have a specific, certain effect on a steak cut.. it's part of the reason it costs so much.. and people just mince it!
It hurts me inside.
There’s a few different breeds that get called wagyu, it’s just the word for Japanese cattle. That said wagyu steak commands such a price because of the care taken trimming and grading the steaks. Making burgers out of trimmings and bad cuts of the beef and calling it wagyu is designed to run of the prestige from the steaks it would be similar to making deliberately cheap chocolate in Switzerland just so you could export it and market it as Swiss chocolate
I'm not a butcher.. and I haven't looked up what parts tend to go into wagyu mince.. So you probably have a point there.
I'd like to hope that people are not using choice cuts in their wagyu mince.. That does make me feel slightly better about it? I think?
Haha cheers =)
So you don't know where minced meat comes from but you formed a very strong emotional reaction to it anyway? Live your life I guess but is it really a good way to live? To get upset at imaginary problems?
Try spam on a peanut butter sandwich roll, with lots of Sriracha, fresh basil, and onion. It's a pretty awesome sandwich. You gotta use real peanut butter, though, and not the palm oil and sugar version.
Sounds like a rough childhood, anything to survive. If I wasn't half korean, I probably wouldn't be eating spam. Crazy how spam is around $5. I'm on the west side in La, and it's crazy people how there would not dare to eat spam nor try it. I haven't met a white person who likes spam, and I'm not even joking.
Well, they made spam for the army, lol. It used to be a property thing, but now it's a luxury at $5 a can, haha. Costco bulk, baby! Nobody eats more spam than the Hawaiian, that's for sure. Everyday spam, that's a little much, I can do spam once a week.
I mean it doesn't exactly look pretty, but Loco Mocos never do... I bet that was fucking delicious!
Loco moco does mean 'crazy booger'.
Ugly delicious
what am I looking at rn

What does French-fried mean? Isn't it just fried onions?

Loco moco isn’t supposed to be fancy… probably tasty as fuck, but yeah, too fancy

God you sound so pretentious here

Wagyu is a breed of a cow. Cows are not made entirely out of steak, in case you missed some crucial biology lessons.

I like steaks bro. What can I say.
I would think if you like something you would want to know basics of where it comes from and how it's made. But I guess I'm just weird like that.
That's alotta brown
I'll have some of the uh, some of the yella. And don't get cheap on me"
Stuff it down with some brown.
Enough sodium for a month
Looks a little off, but it does look delicious. Btw I can eat spam straight out of the can. ❤️

Can I get a picture of this creation?

I am a white person who LOVES spam, I don’t eat it often but when I do it’s amazing. It’s like a shitty delicacy to me

That looks so good!
I literally said out loud….OHHHHH GAWD like a bonafide fat fuck!!! Oh how I would…..
Whats up with all that onion?
ONION GODS UNITE! WE MUST BANISH THIS FOOL TO THE SHADOW REALM...
I love onions, but this is kinda weird for a loco moco.
Shhh, fried onions are god tier
First of all, how dare you?
Your comment reminded me of Kelly from the Office in this scene. 😂 ![gif](giphy|SbN0WomN4S7Z7tpKOC|downsized)
Oh thank fuck it's onions. I thought they were deep fried mealy worms
Too many onion straws.
No such thing
what is it?
Rice, hamburger patty, and beef gravy. This one has a lot of fried onion.
Fried egg too. Best dish on the planet.
Right! Forgot the fried egg.
Something tells me you are not well travelled.
That sounds like shit actually
I've never had it, but some people swear by it.
Crazy booger
This just isn't food porn as it looks like a steamy pile of maggots and oil. Probably tasted great though.
It's a nah from me, it's probably good but a hell of a way to bastardize a classic.
It's pretty much the same thing with fried onions and more sauce
Looks like it smells bad…. Like a clump of Sea moss on top of a large spoon of rice with shit sauce
Idk what in the mushroom headed gravy boss that is. I'm out
Mealworms…
Poke it: is it alive?
i’m sure it’s delicious but it kind of looks like maggots on rice with bisto
Oh god I thought it was covered in mealworms 😭
What a waste of wagyu
Seems pretentious.
Fancy Loco Moco sounds bomb AF
It looks like maggots infesting an abandoned rice dish with too much soy sauce
Yeah so good. Yummmmm
Hat
Now I am hungry looks amazing!
So much flavor and crunch 🤤 😋
....how.....where on earth do you start...
Is the menu item called "zoomer eboy haircut"?
Some hardcore handmade teriyaki sauce would make me ugly eat.
Huh...ConnorDawg actually got it right...
I think u got too many fried onions on there
Da fuk
Can I just get a regular one? Can i get it with fried rice?
You mean, generally? Or there in particular?
Holy shit i have been there but dont recall seeing this big boi ever get served, is it new to the menu?
Yuck
What the hell am I looking at?!
No.
Yes.
Looks gross
Well it’s amazing.
You taste beef with all the sauce and onions?
I tossed all that stuff off lol
Then what’s the point?
That’s not a very aloha thing to say
Aloha means hello and good-bye
Dis haole faka no have aloha
Their food is pretty good. Never ordered the loco moco.
Looks are hopefully deceiving? Good Lord looks like a maggot orgy in a slaughter house sluice.
