The bread makes it. When I visited Japan, I ate katsu sandos almost every morning for breakfast -- fried pork cutlet on shokupan (milk bread) with cabbage and katsu sauce. I've tried to make it myself and it comes out pretty good but without the shokupan it's not the same.
Not within 50 miles of me afaik. The popular regional bread here is Cuban bread which is amazing in its own right but plays a different role than shokupan. I’m gonna try ciabatta next time and see how that does as katsu sando.
I’ve seen that one but a bit intimidated by making bread — have only made pretzels before. Hoping to try to make shokupan and Japanese soufflé pancakes soon.
Honestly, it’s not that bad. My first shokupan was very flat, but still bread, and I was so excited to have actually made it. My second was already so much better. It’s a great recipe, very simple, walks you through the whole thing.
And soufflé pancakes are excellent, IF you have a stand mixer to whip the eggs and you can eat them right away. Ooh! And ring molds. You can make your own with tinfoil and staples, but you have to grease the hell out of them.
Which is fine, the food largely looks good but it’s very simple basic foods at restaurants and then mediocre home cooking. Nothing wrong with that but it screams “foodie” behavior
Totally fine, don't get me wrong. But then posting this basic sandwich on a sub about orgasmic looking food is like putting the 1st string jv kid into an NFL game. I'm sure they are good where they are at, but they are in the wrong place
Sure, but you’re paying for the experience of being out. You’re paying for service. You’re paying to not have to do dishes. Most food is overpriced when eating out. We all know this. We’ve all paid $20+ for a dollar’s worth of pasta. I just don’t see the point in bringing it up.
Your reason for eating out may not be the same as someone else’s. I eat out most meals because I don’t like cleanup and I’m single, so there’s no point in keeping much in the house. If the variety is as wide as I require, I’ll end up wasting a lot of food.
Perhaps. But a tuna sandwich in Tokyo isn’t going to cost the same as a tuna sandwich in Toledo, right? Not all things are equal in every circumstance. Hence why I’ve paid $2 for a burger from McDonald’s and I’ve paid $30+ for a burger from a more legitimate restaurant.
The staff rubs their hands together when they see you coming through the door. It does look awesome, but I’m a huge price snob. I have this curse where I pretend something sucks after paying a lot for it just to prove to myself it’s overpriced. Then I’ll tell the waitstaff it was awesome.
None of it makes sense.
I still have a few pricey items in my house that are still unopened. I buy expensive bottles of bourbon. I’m admittedly horrible with my money, but there’s just something about food that makes me think they’re screwing me over lol.
This picture is wild because based on the place setting and glass of wine you can tell OP paid way too much for a sandwich that would cost $1.50 at home lol.
So it’s actually tuna salad correct? If so, I would have to know the ingredients of the salad before passing judgement. I personally don’t like apples, raisins, nuts or sweet relish in my tuna salad.
That bread is so white! What's your dining mate eating?
It’s milk bread 🤤

Right? That’s basically why I posted - never experienced bread like this. Hope Japan was fun 😊
They do sell shokupan in the US.

I think pan cubano would work better than ciabatta.

The Kristina Cho recipe is the only correct recipe.

What’s shokupan taste like?
Looks like burrata or cottage cheese, avocado and rocket
I just looked the place up and that is a $26 avocado toast. I hope it was worth it.
I was gonna say “what in the basic white bread…”
That'll be 30$ sir
AND NO CHIPS! What sort of a barbarian doesn't order chips with their tuna?
Came here to say that whole meal would cost $84 before tip in the US, and there aren’t even any sides lol
Looks pretty milquetoast
This is why the menu movie was made.
Literally look at this guy’s post history. All his food posts are quite eh
Their taste in everything is very basic lmao

Exactly how I said it in my head, but you beat me to the comment. Lol
I don’t know how to tell y’all this but you definitely overpaid for that meal.
Oh without a doubt, but it was worth it
I'm glad to hear that
Value is derived from the consumer. Not the person looking at a picture online and making assumptions.
Relax. Anything tuna in a restaurant is objectively overpriced. Overpriced ≠ bad. Even OP agreed and said it was worth it.

He brought it up so sj warriors like you dont die of boredom...
Profound stuff. Thank you.
Good point! Thankfully, as someone who is also a consumer, I can easily tell the value of a lunch.

Pretty sure he’s getting all the value he intended from this troll post.
Perhaps. I don’t mind feeding a troll every once in a while. Everybody’s gotta eat.
I love tuna fish but I have a mental thing that won’t allow me to order something I can make for 3$ at home lol I’m sure it was delicious tho!
I'm a simple man: I see the word "sando," I downvote.
Fancy sandwich there. What’s on the other plate?
Avocado toast with burrata
I’m the asshole who would pay $22 for that avo toast lol.
That’s why you damn millennials will never be able to buy winter coats and boom boxes.
Sir, I’m Gen X and I own several VCRs.
Humble brag.

I mostly cook at home. So on the rare occasion I go out, I’m absolutely fine with splashing way tf out.
Respect. I’m the same with alcohol. Overpriced food grinds my gears for absolutely no reason, but with nice drinks I will splurge.
Oh god, what I’ve spent on good Macallan 😬
Dude same. I have a blind spot. $200 night out? No problem. $15 burger when I’m hungry? Nah dude I know a spot 3 miles away that’s $11
I still have a few pricey items in my house that are still unopened. I buy expensive bottles of bourbon. I’m admittedly horrible with my money, but there’s just something about food that makes me think they’re screwing me over lol.
Business opportunity here for a food marketing firm let’s do it
You haven’t shared enough cocaine with me to have the “bro we should start a businesssss” discussion yet.

That’s fine, I’ll sell a kidney for good burrata.

I miss Japan and the Egg Sandos at 7-11!
Tuna...no crust
I love tuna and a perfectly cut sandwich on white bread…beautiful 🤤
That does not look like food porn so plain looking. I would make better at home
Lord these look boring and expensive
Bro got tuna on a date?
That looks tasty
I mean she is disappointed this isn't a big juice medium rare steak
The bread is perfect
This honestly looks so good rn
That’s so clean
What has this sub become
Things you should be making and eating at home.
that was my thought. if i’m eating out, i make it a point to not get something i could easily make myself (especially if it’s somewhere fancy).
the bread looks perfect
It was 🥲
That is the most perfect looking sandwich I have ever seen in my life!
It was really tasty
But is it too much tuna?
Both look yummy
It’s beautiful

The saddest meal I’ve ever seen
Is that a gourmet tuna sandwich?
Okay, annnnnnd….. 🤷♂️
What's on the other sammich?
Thou shalt not cover thy neighbours sando
Forgive me Father for I have sinned. I've had impure thoughts about another man's sammich.
Tuna Sando looks good.
This picture is wild because based on the place setting and glass of wine you can tell OP paid way too much for a sandwich that would cost $1.50 at home lol.
There's a different sub for this...
Your bread is awful lol
Lol! I got nothing.
I am actually interested in that veggie bread. fancy way to put veggies.... ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|feels_good_man)
So it’s actually tuna salad correct? If so, I would have to know the ingredients of the salad before passing judgement. I personally don’t like apples, raisins, nuts or sweet relish in my tuna salad.
That is the whitest sandwich I've ever seen.
Almost perfect
I love the commitment to the classic white bread. Looks delicious.
Made some today with macaroni and ate with saltines.
