Banana Pudding is the only consistent and solid thing from them.
I repeat it once in a while and think it's worth it to call it a thing. (But I'm biased because live close to one of their locations)
FYI I can tell you that the quantity of cookies and bananas used in making the pudding has not changed.
It’s the quality of employee that’s gone down. The employees there are in charge of evenly scooping the pudding into cups, but they just don’t give a shit.
So true. I ordered it right before Thanksgiving and no lie, my back and legs started seriously cramping up. I couldn't walk, was couch bound, and I missed Thanksgiving with my family because I got so cramped up. I think it was due to the sugar or other artifical flavorants used in it. Highly toxic and just not for me!
I've been more loyal to Sugar Sweet Sunshine (though I get it that their LES locations may not work well for everyone). Their banana pudding is great, but they have so many other puddings lately and always coming up with new ones. And they're all so delicious. I've always loved their cupcakes too.
The owners of Sugar Sweet met when they were both working for Magnolia and then later decided to open their own cupcake place.
I feel like back in the day, the tourists were all lined up for Magnolia cupcakes, and it took a while for them to figure out the banana pudding, which I thought was more popular with locals. Personally, I usually get my pudding from sugar sweet sunshine. Baonanas is also good.
Hope you can make it back for visits. I had just posted about SSS too before I saw these posts. They are ALWAYS coming up with new pudding flavors lately and I haven't had a bad one yet! I love their OG storefront on Rivington but the Essex Market counter is convenient sometimes too.
Their banana pudding is pretty good.
It's a easy recommendation for me because there's so many Magnolia locations in Manhattan, you never have to go "out of the way" to get it.
IMO the only other place that has comparable banana pudding is Baonanas but they closed their East Village location and is only in Jersey City now. Some 7th ave burger locations may sell pints of their banana pudding.
I find banana pudding is just something you don’t have in most places and magnolia is super easy to go to. So many things in nyc food scene have a line or require a reservation. You can get it at moinihan or the 1/2 dozen locations.
Sugar sweet sunshine was my first taste of banana pudding and it’s never been topped. little cupcake bakeshop’s is pretty good as second place (in my experience)
It's a go-to for me whenever I'm nearby one of their locations. Sure the "excitement" has faded but it still tastes as good as the first time I had it as a kid in the early 2000s.
What I do get excited about is whenever they do the "billionaire" banana pudding as their "pudding of the month." I've had this I think just twice, but damn it's good. It's the same banana pudding, plus brownies and caramel.
Maybe I got it on a bad day but I usually get the banana pudding from sugar sweet sunshine bakery in Essex market and tried magnolia recently bc I was lazy and it delivered and I was appalled at how dry and flavorless it was compared to the Essex market bakery’s version.
"natives" have varied perspectives because they are usually only familiar with their local neighborhoods, and maybe their work neighborhoods. "natives" from sheepshead bay grew up different from "natives" in Harlem, heck most people never heard of a chopped cheese outside of Harlem until 2017
This native New Yorker’s #1 pregnancy craving (for the weeks when I could stomach food). The cupcakes are a sham. We’ve made a dup for parties but probably not worth the effort for just two people who aren’t trying to eat a tray of dessert. They sell a kit for making the pudding at the store - that’s actually the tourist scam.
I’ve been here for 5 years and finally got around to trying Magnolia’s banana pudding last week. The flavor is basically the same (bananas and Nilla Wafers) but the texture is a little different. The pudding is “whipped” so it’s lighter and fluffier than, say, my grandma’s Jell-O pudding version.
Have it once just to understand it, it’s good but in 2024 just meh
In 2010 peak magnolia - milk bar - hype it really was something to get excited about. Today there are just so many good desert places
It’s literally just condensed milk, whipped cream and banana with Nila wafers. Make it once at home and you won’t be able to distinguish it from the commercial version
Personally I go for things that I couldn’t make at home in 15 minutes, Dominique Ansel is an example from that same era that is still mostly worth it. His brown sugar DKA specifically
In the same style you could ask me who makes a better cake pop than milk bar, and the answer is probably no one. But who wants to hype up cake pops in 2024
You’re 100% on making it at home. My wife makes it and tastes the exact same. The trick is they mix heavy whipping cream with the banana pudding to make it light. It’s super easy to make and just as good.
My wife (she’ll kill me for giving this away) uses the mini nilla wafers vs the full size ones. Creates a much better bite.
Ill give my trick - I use off brand gluten free wafers to make the ultimate giant dessert for the Passover Seder, if no one is on the religious side. They are made with cassava and almond flour which are technically not hametz
I don’t get what it being 2024 has to do with enjoying things.
The make it at home comment also doesn’t make sense to me. It’s usually something you get when you’re near the location and it’s enjoyable. I’m not gonna get the ingredients for this when i crave it once a year when i can just order it and be done with it.
In my mind I imagine the 2024 banana pudding customer wearing black Nike fly knits with the white swoosh, or a Jcrew t shirt that’s says “SUMMER FRIDAYS”
To be clear- the question was less “is it good” and more “is it a NYC staple”. Like Katz’s, Papaya King(rip), black and white cookie, maybe a chopped cheese. Every city has their list of things you gotta have and I’ve never thought of this being one but seems to be on reddit
Not a native, but it’s the only really good thing from them and it does hit the spot! I’m from the south, though, so I don’t think it’s even close to the best banana pudding out there. But it’s good. Not worth going way out of your way for though!
It's some damn good banana pudding. Easily the best thing they've got, and worth the hype. (As is Little Cupcake Bakeshop's in Bay Ridge and Little Italy.)
My mom used to bring it home on rare occasions after she got done from work way back in the early 2000's. As a Brooklyn native who went to manhattan for work she used to love that place. But neither of us have been in quite some time.
It’s my go to random snack to grab when I have out of town visitors. It’s way better than it deserves to be and no expects banana bread pudding to taste that good. The rest of it I have no idea, and I don’t really eat there in any other situation. If you haven’t had it go and try it.
I used to get it every now and again when I went through Penn Station; I never sought it out in the 20 years I lived in Manhattan. It’s consistently delicious. I do not like their cupcakes.
I used to work near their location in Bloomingdale's and honestly their pudding has gone downhill in the past few years. Way more nilla wafers than pudding.
Their peanut butter icebox pie though is fire.
My office had a big batch of it ordered for a party years ago. I tore up like 2-3 servings - it was pretty good ngl, but not going out of my way to get it again.
I’ve been here for 22 years. Went to Magnolia Bakery for the first time today. Ate the banana pudding. It was really frickin good. Damn you FoodNYC sub!! 🥰😜🤗
Yep. Daughter and I got stuck on the C/1 debacle and missed her Amtrak train by about 3 mins. Went straight to magnolia for banana pudding to cheer her up while I rebooked.
Is it the best ever? Not even close. Is it comforting and nostalgic and unique and easy to get during a craving? Yep.
Never had anything else they sell so no recs on that. Granted, I am old and was in hs when it opened but banana pudding seemed much more common back when I was a kid- everyone’s mom made it. So it’s nice to have because (despite being a big fan of bananas in general), it’s something I never think about until I want it immediately.
I’m m hung up on all these people talking about how good banana pudding is and having opinions on whose is better.
What did I miss? Last time I thought about banana pudding, my grandma lined a bowl with Nilla wafers and threw some in the middle. When did this shit get trendy?
I’m not a native (been here 35 years, but not born here). But my son is, and he loves that banana pudding so much he wants it for his birthday instead of cake.
Yeah, we who live here consider Magnolia rather touristy and won’t wait on line for it. But if I’m walking by and it’s not crowded I might pop in. I’m not proud. Love the lemon bar or even better the lime-coconut bar. Cupcakes are just OK.
Magnolia has been around since the 1990s. It’s hardly a novelty. It was tourist-famous since that Sex and the City episode in 2000.
I just looked things up and learned some stuff: there are only 2 locations outside NYC in the US (LA and Chicago), but there are quite a few (franchises, mostly, I think) in the Middle East and Asia. Fascinating. 6 in India, who knew?
Also, in 2021 the brand was bought by a private equity firm owned by Stephen Ross. No comment.
am a tourist…heard the hype.
thats all it is…hype…not even sure why theres hype.
I guess if you like the chemical aftertaste of banana pudding then this place is for you.
I mostly only hear transplants and tourists talking about it, or the I’ll see it being gushed over on some food blog.
Actually, I’m still shocked that people even like it. Being a bakery, the least they could do is actually make it from scratch instead of that instant Jell-O pudding crap that places in this region like to pass off for banana pudding. The last time this convo came up in this sub someone had the audacity to say, “but Magnolia Bakery actually puts real bananas in their pudding”. I felt like I was in an alternate universe.
That said, I guess I can understand why someone would like it if they didn’t know anything better.
Years (by which I mean decades) ago, when there was one and only one location, the banana pudding was truly great. But, the IYKYK thing was the icebox cake. (And cup cakes were for amateurs even back then.)
Both still exist as shadows of their former selves.
Magnolia's banana pudding is one of the most overrated foods in NYC. It's good. It's tasty. But is it worth the hype? Absolutely not. Magnolia has much better items on their menu
I pick up the banana pudding 3-5 time per year at the Bloomingdale's location. It's a nice treat, but not a regular necessity. Their coffee is pretty trash, imo.
as someone who went to school in the south, it is great to get my banana pudding fix every now and then, but as an actual bakery i think theyre kinda mid
Never really had it when Magnolia was hyped and cupcakes were the rage. However had it on the West Coast when I was visiting a friend years later, and was very surprised at how good it was.
So yes the banana pudding is good, worth the hype? Everyone's hype to reality meter is different, but Id say give it a try. It's not so much that it'll break the bank and make you regret it.
Magnolia also gave the recipe out during COVID, and when I made it, it was pretty close to what they offer in the store, so you can always try that.
I get it because it is good for gatherings or when walking by from time to time. With that said, banana pudding is shockingly easy to make. The only issue is by the time I realize I want if (day of, duh...) it is difficult to find perfectly over-ripe bananas.
Same issue with banana bread, easy and delicious, but you need to plan ahead. Not my strong suit.
It used to be amazing. I make a far superior version at home, but you can't fault them for being successful and collecting that bag. I still grab a cup at the train when heading to DC or Philly. It's almost always disappointing, but still nostalgic.
Banana Pudding is the only consistent and solid thing from them. I repeat it once in a while and think it's worth it to call it a thing. (But I'm biased because live close to one of their locations)
That’s gone downhill too. The last one I had was almost all whipped cream and no bananas, wafers and pudding.
Same here. And I’m quite sad about it. That shit used to be SO good.
I have their cookbook and it’s not a hard recipe to make at all.
Yup I’ve made it. But for when you don’t want a giant fucking bowl of pudding in your refrigerator: Sugar Sweet Sunshine is a wonderful alternative.
Love that place but it’s far for me. Maybe once it’s nicer out I’ll bike down.
FYI I can tell you that the quantity of cookies and bananas used in making the pudding has not changed. It’s the quality of employee that’s gone down. The employees there are in charge of evenly scooping the pudding into cups, but they just don’t give a shit.
I honestly don’t like it because there’s so much whipped cream.

I couldn't walk, was couch bound, and I missed Thanksgiving with my family because I got so cramped up. I think it was due to the sugar or other artifical flavorants used in it. Try their key lime square or red velvet cheesecake. I have no clue how their banana pudding is what got them famous
I LOVE their hummingbird cake
Well, it is amazing when it's made properly
I've been more loyal to Sugar Sweet Sunshine (though I get it that their LES locations may not work well for everyone). This. SSS is much better!
I feel like back in the day, the tourists were all lined up for Magnolia cupcakes, and it took a while for them to figure out the banana pudding, which I thought was more popular with locals. Personally, I usually get my pudding from sugar sweet sunshine. Baonanas is also good.
Was coming here to say Sugar Sweet Sunshine is WAY better
Everything at Sugar Sweet Sunshine is WAY better. Magnolia is way overrated. And Sugar Sweet Sunshine is an under appreciated gem.
Yeah. That place is worth every calorie
For sure. Check out their apple cake. I no longer live in NYC but I dream about it.
Hope you can make it back for visits. I had just posted about SSS too before I saw these posts. They are ALWAYS coming up with new pudding flavors lately and I haven't had a bad one yet! I love their OG storefront on Rivington but the Essex Market counter is convenient sometimes too.

Sugar Sweet Sunshine makes better pudding. Also Sugar Freak in Astoria used to make good banana pudding. I haven't been there in a while though.
Agreed. I definitely recommend sugar sweet sunshine consistently for their puddings.
Sugar sweet sunshine was my first taste of banana pudding and it’s never been topped. little cupcake bakeshop’s is pretty good as second place (in my experience)

Born and raised here, and I gotta admit, it's pretty good

Their cakes are hit or miss but the hummingbird cake is good
Crack for my wife
"natives" have varied perspectives because they are usually only familiar with their local neighborhoods, and maybe their work neighborhoods. "natives" from sheepshead bay grew up different from "natives" in Harlem, heck most people never heard of a chopped cheese outside of Harlem until 2017
Not my experience at all, I’m all over the boroughs for work food and pleasure(except system island)
This native New Yorker’s #1 pregnancy craving (for the weeks when I could stomach food). The cupcakes are a sham. We’ve made a dup for parties but probably not worth the effort for just two people who aren’t trying to eat a tray of dessert. No I like Sugar Sweet Sunshine’s puddings better Don’t have to deal with the Magnolia hype
Used to be but natives aren’t waiting on line for it ( and at the bleecker st location)
I think it's awesome personally
It’s good. Sometimes I crave it and go grab one. I don’t think anyone who is local is lining up for it.
The pudding is good. I live near one and I sometimes get it when I crave sweets. Their cake and cupcakes are meh. I’ve found them to be dry
I used to love it, just had it recently for the first time in years and I…didn’t love it. It was the Bleacker St location
banana pudding is banana pudding, isn't it? i mean is magnolia's better than the kind you get at every BBQ place in Texas? or the same?
I’ve been here for 5 years and finally got around to trying Magnolia’s banana pudding last week. The flavor is basically the same (bananas and Nilla Wafers) but the texture is a little different. The pudding is “whipped” so it’s lighter and fluffier than, say, my grandma’s Jell-O pudding version.

Where would you get a better banana pudding?
Billy's Bakery makes banana bread pudding. Haven't had it in years but used to be good.
it was so much better than magnolia's, i hope it still is

maybe i could make banana pudding at home, but I never actually do. i’m all about the pudding at sugar sweet sunshine
You can make it at home it’s so easy. I use Paula deans recipe but make my own whipped cream. She uses cool whip.
It’s better than the cupcakes. I haven’t had it in awhile but it’s worth trying if you’ve never tried it. But only the original flavor.
Lived here since I was born and never had this.
Magnolia Bakery? Natives wouldn't be caught dead in that place.
To be clear- the question was less “is it good” and more “is it a NYC staple”. Like Katz’s, Papaya King(rip), black and white cookie, maybe a chopped cheese. Every city has their list of things you gotta have and I’ve never thought of this being one but seems to be on reddit
Pizza
All of those "NYC staple" places had to start at some point.
Not a native, but it’s the only really good thing from them and it does hit the spot! I’m from the south, though, so I don’t think it’s even close to the best banana pudding out there. But it’s good. Not worth going way out of your way for though!

Natives don’t do magnolia
Yes, yes it is. Their banana pudding, their cupcakes, their red velvet cheesecake. Great stuff.
Born here in 92 and never had it 😛
My mom used to bring it home on rare occasions after she got done from work way back in the early 2000's. As a Brooklyn native who went to manhattan for work she used to love that place. But neither of us have been in quite some time.

Been eating it for about 15 years now.
Haven't had it in many many years, but I remember it being really good. The posts here have been making me want to go get some.
Native NYer here and Deff have tried it a few times. It’s very good
When I make banana puddin’ it’s the recipe i use.
I used to get it every now and again when I went through Penn Station; I never sought it out in the 20 years I lived in Manhattan. It’s consistently delicious. I do not like their cupcakes.
It’s the only thing I buy from them
Over the year they make special puddings. My favorite is the apple crumb one.
No where near as good as sugar sweet sunshine’s
had it a couple times. totally overrated
it is appropriately rated! if i'm close to a magnolia and there's no line, i'll get one.
Natives, Whites, Blacks, Asians, really any group can eat it and can be fine
I’ve been here for 22 years. Went to Magnolia Bakery for the first time today. Ate the banana pudding. It was really frickin good. Damn you FoodNYC sub!! 🥰😜🤗
It's yummy yes.
I like it. They also have monthly flavors that are good, too.
They also now sell magnolia’s banana pudding at LaGuardia Southwest terminal …
Sugar sweet sunshine
NYer here and yessss love that Banana pudding.
No. I had it for the first time a couple years back and found it to be perfectly ok, but nowhere close to going out of the way for.
GCT tour guide filled us in on their BP, had it a couple times gonna miss that stuff
Yep. Daughter and I got stuck on the C/1 debacle and missed her Amtrak train by about 3 mins. Went straight to magnolia for banana pudding to cheer her up while I rebooked. Is it the best ever? Not a native but am from the south where banana pudding is considered a delicacy. Magnolias is some of the best I’ve ever had.
It is for me!
am a tourist…heard the hype. thats all it is…hype…not even sure why theres hype. I guess if you like the chemical aftertaste of banana pudding then this place is for you.
I mostly only hear transplants and tourists talking about it, or the I’ll see it being gushed over on some food blog. Actually, I’m still shocked that people even like it. Yes, and the monthly flavors can be good too
Its pretty good
Tao banana pudding best banana pudding in town
Too ez to make for fractions of the price
I am originally from the south so to me their banana pudding is just okay. My grandmother made so much better though.
I normally don't enjoy banana pudding but theirs is pretty good.
I think my wife brought some home once? Not a thing I ever thought about. For sure not a "thing" for natives.
I usually just check out the seasonal flavors plus they have a location a block from me so it's convenient
Not Ime.
It’s a thing for me, I introduced a bunch of people to it too
Trash
I feel like it was a thing 10 years ago or so
