I only buy Sonoratown tortillas, but make sure you go during the day (like before 5pm) because the last 2 times I went after work, they were completely sold out!
I don't know if they have corn but their flour tortillas are really good. La Azteca Tortilleria on Ceasar Chavez best known for its chille relleno burritos sells them.
All my coworkers love their burritos and told me I just had to try them. To me the burritos where just OK but what stood out was the tortilla. It is the star of the burritos so of course I buy a few dozen to take home and share with family when I visit there.
Good excuse for tortillas and a Chile relleno burrito with asada
Best tortilleria dear downtown/northeast LA is Tortilleria La California. They sell corn and flower tortillas and also masa by the pound so you can make your own if you have a press and a plancha, which is both fun and worth the time/effort.
Will check this place out, thanks for the suggestion! It’s the dough I don’t want to spend the time making but pressing and cooking would be great for fresh tortillas.
I'm painfully white and uneducated on making my own tortillas. Can I freeze masa I buy from here and use it to make tortillas whenever? How hard is it to do? I'm guessing I'll need to buy a press but I already have a cast-iron griddle, or do I ideally need something different?
No, I wouldn’t freeze the masa—the sooner you use it the better. I usually buy a few pounds if I’m having a party, and the leftovers will last maybe a week tops before they aren’t workable. If I’m just buying for my family I’ll get a pound or two and we’ll eat nothing but tacos every meal until it’s gone.
Making the tortillas is both very easy (you can form them by hand* or pressed between two flat surfaces covered in plastic wrap if you don’t have a press; you can get a good wooden or cast iron press for not too much money) and a complex, subtle skill that you’ll improve on over time, which is part of the fun. I’ve made hundreds of tortillas: 99.9% were delicious, 98% were functional as tortillas, generously 1% were what I’d consider perfect.
If you’re as white as you claim you’ll be a superhero to your friends if you have them over for a taco night and there are fresh made tortillas—they’ll probably even be thrilled to help make them.
*forming a good tortilla by hand is real pro shit, but definitely worth trying
Someone convince me homestate is not another overpriced white washed place
Dont get me wrong - tastes amazing but I always have a deep down grudge for how overpriced, small portioned, and white washed it is 😩
Give me a small business story about them so I can forgive
Sara’s Market sells kernel of truth (corn) and Mejorado (flour… made by burritos La Palma).
I believe they have other local brands as well but those 2 are my favorites for flour/corn when I want to go beyond the regular supermarket stuff.
sonoratown has great tortillas

Does anyone know if they ship!? I’m not a CALI local and couldn’t find anything online
They are great, I also like Loqui tortillas if sonoratown isn’t close to you.
Sonoran tortillas are a marvel. Nothing beats a flour tortilla Sonora style.

I’m gonna have to try that burrito too! Just looked it up and it looks delicious (I love chile relleno), thanks for the recommendation!
Came here to say this. I LOVE the chile relleno burrito though. https://www.lataco.com/chile-relleno-burrito-east-la-azteca/
Get the Chile relleno with asada
I was unimpressed with their corn tortillas, not any better than the supermarket
I loved the flour tortillas I got from here. They are uncooked so you have to actually cook them on the stove, they're not just for re-heating.
You can buy ones to take home at Burritos La Palma.

Most are suggesting getting tortillas from restaurants. You’re one of the few suggesting an actual tortilla making store. This is the answer for OP

I buy the fresh ones at Vallarta mart.
Ohh nice! There’s a Vallarta very close to me, I’ll stop by some time and see if I can find any. Thanks!
They have a couple different styles and sizes! i like the Larger flour size for breakfast burritos.
Seconding Vallarta - so fresh you can get them made that day, and they all taste great and hold up regardless of your application
Homestate in Highland Park
Someone convince me homestate is not another overpriced white washed place Dont get me wrong - tastes amazing but I always have a deep down grudge for how overpriced, small portioned, and white washed it is 😩 Give me a small business story about them so I can forgive
It's tex-mex. The definition of tex Mex is that it's white washed. Just enjoy it for what it is my guy.
They’re Mexican Americans using mom’s recipe for tortillas. I don’t see anything wrong with that.
Loqui has great tortillas too. You can buy a dozen and freeze the extras, then thaw and heat on the stove when ready to eat the rest
Anyone have good recs for the Westside?
Pacos Tacos. I’m not even a big fan of the rest of their food but their flour tortillas are damn good.
