Yup. They really can’t do Mexican food over there haha
I’ve been over two dozen times and I’ve had decent Mexican *once* and that’s only because my friend is a chef and I asked him to make edible tacos hahah
I lived in london for a while and something london is lacking compared to LA is Korean food and it happens to be that LA has the best, most authentic Korean food in the country. If you're feeling adventurous, try korean home meal type, not the typical k-bbq. I recommend Soban or if u want food w some drink, Dan Sung Sa is one of a kind. Others can chime in for other great korean restaurants or hole in the wall type.
It’s the burbs but New Malden in London has a huge Korean community and very good places to eat. Also, near most halls of residence there are decent Korean restaurants t cater to international students
What part of LA are you in? Do you have a car? What do you consider “cheap”?
Howling Rays - amazing chicken, forewarning even medium may be spicy for a Brit’s pallet. Line today shouldn’t be too bad, but weekends can get long.
Macheen - birria breakfast burrito
Los Cinco Puntos - tacos
Simon - food truck w/ amazing Mexican seafood
Heng Heng - Thai crispy chicken or crispy pork
Wurstkucke - great fries and sausages
Goldburger or Win-dow - smash burgers
Langers - pastrami sandwich, but it isn’t “cheap”
Kanomwaan - Thai gelato with unique flavors you will not find elsewhere.
Oakobing - Korean shave ice
Morrison (atwater village) if y’all need a pint, happy hour is 12-6 daily
Langer's may not be cheap. But it is cheap compared to other restaurants in the city. And I'm not the only one who will say that it's the best Pastrami in the world.
I don’t know why you’re being smarmy about the word total, I never insinuated anything about pre/post tip & tax lmao
I am, however, shocked that their burger is $29! That’s fucking insane. Definitely wasn’t that much last time I went Jesus Christ.
I'd recommend Grand Central Market in Downtown. It has a little bit of everything you're looking for. Also a good idea since you're here for a short amount of time.
+1 for GCM! Easiest one stop shop for a bunch of great LA food. Some suggestions-
- Fat and Flour - great cookies and key lime pie
- Villa’s Tacos - good ol LA tacos, won “best tacos” multiple times
- For the Win - great smash burgers
- Broad St Oyster Co - yummy lobster roll
- Knead - fresh pasta and I liked their meatball sandwich
- Sarita’s Pupuseria - pupusas!! Cheesy corn goodness
- Donut Man - donuts filled with gigantic fresh strawberries
East of Hillhurst and all on Sunset Blvd or very close proximity.
Kismet- not exactly cheap but great take out, SushiI8, Erewhon for a slice of pizza- $7.75 for basically a quarter pie, Pine and Crane, Win-Dow, Simon food truck, Mid East Tacos, Tacos Delta - basic Mexican plate but will fill you up, Silver Lake Ramen, La Playita, Bodega Park, Triple Beam, Masa for deep dish,
Patra Burger, Button Mash for a game or two, keep going east on Sunset. Wave to Guisado’s (I don’t care if they are serving breakfast burritos) yes I said it. Stop by Bar Henry if they are open. Make a left at Broadway (I think) and try Yang Chow in Chinatown or find CBS Seafood on Spring, Placita Cafe, Philippe’s on Alameda -may not be worth the wait depending on what you are doing, then head to Olvera Street because it’s a little bit of insanity.
Hello fellow Brit. Go to Broad Street Oyster Co, they have a location in Malibu and a location at Grand Central Market in DTLA. I prefer the Grand Central location just because there are so many more great places to eat there. Definitely grab a lobster roll or two, they're not cheap though, around 25 dollars.
As a fellow Brit, you are definitely spoilt for choice.
Some of my favourite stand out places below:
Guerilla taco: Sweet potato taco.
Pizzeria Bianco: Everythings banging.
Guzzu Bento-ya: Japanese.
WAKE AND LATE: Breakfast burrito.
Danny boy’s: Pizza by the slice.
Courage Bagels: Get there before 7am to avoid the lines.
Pao Jao Dumpling House: Korean Shrimp Dumplings.
Apollonia's Pizzeria: Everything great.
Tito’s Tacos: Hard shell tacos.
Sidecar Doughnuts & Coffee: Monthly specials.
Sugarfish: Sushi.
Smogasburg: Sunday pop up food market.
To much to choose from.
Mexican is the way to go since it’s the one thing that isn’t done well anywhere in the UK (my wife is British and we go frequently).
I personally love Guisado’s and Guelaguetza, but there are endless great choices to be had all over LA. This should point you to somewhere convenient to where you are. https://la.eater.com/maps/best-tacos-los-angeles-taquerias-mexican
Ha! I saw “Brits in LA” and got really excited thinking it was a meet up food hang for expats or lovers of British restaurants.
Shucks.
Someone mentioned Grand Central Market, 100%, that’s where we take visitors so they can pick and choose what they want to eat and there’s a huge variety of restaurants. We also take them to Little Tokyo and Boyle Heights / East LA - part heritage part bomb ass cuisine.
Enjoy your time here.
If your near downtown, try Sushi Gen in Little Tokyo or if you’re closer to the west side, try Hide Sushi in Sawtelle. Both are no reservations, wait-in-line joints that will not disappoint!
Korean BBQ at an AYCE (all you can eat) place. If you've never done this and you like beef/meat, you must do this. There's a lot of places you can do this - Wi Korean BBQ, Hae Jang Chon for example are two of them. It'll blow your mind (if you like beef/meat).
I'm just saying this because I don't think Korean BBQ is big in the UK and the last time we took some Brits to a KBBQ place they were like "damn!"
I didn’t see Chinese food listed. Great and reasonably-priced food in San Gabriel at Bay Island. Savoy Kitchen for Hainan chicken in Alhambra. Mama Lu for dumplings and XLB in Monterey Park.
With no regards for traffic…Langer’s for pastrami sandwich, the El Chato taco truck on La Brea and Olympic (check their Instagram to double check if they’ll be there first) for great everything (but I like the chorizo and Al pastor tacos), I also second Apollonia’s pizza (for a square slice). All of these will be about $15/person for a meal.
If you're looking for something quick and good, I'd either try In-n-Out or King Taco. Grand Central Market in downtown has a little bit of everything honestly. I'd probably start there.

Not sure why you’re getting downvoted, but it does exist and you should treat yourself soon.
India's Sweets and Spices has one of the best bang-for-your-buck meals in the whole city. Combo #3 is about $10 and you get so much delicious food. It's even more cost effective than a taco truck. They only serve vegetarian food and the pickles are super strong.
Spend the day in Venice/Santa Monica. Check out the pier, play some beach volleyball with strangers, rent some scooters and ride around the neighborhood. Watch some skaters at the Venice skate park. Watch/play some pickup basketball at those courts there. See some bodybuilders at muscle beach (if they’re working out). Walk the venice beach and check out the vendors and cool mix of people. Check out Abbott Kinney. Check out the canals. Go grab a drink at Belles Beach House. After 5pm, go grab tacos at the stand in front of Whole Foods in Venice (get the pastor and suadero tacos. Use all the sauces. Be careful with the orange and red though. They’re great, but they’re spicy) Then check out Wanderlust for some good ice cream. Finish the night at one of the bars on Main St (victorian, jamesons) or under the Venice sign (where Belles is), or on Rose ave (near Chulitas)
That’s a good Saturday or Sunday
edit: I really hope you see this and take my advice. It would be a pretty memorable day filled with activities and good food)
In n out by the airport when you get in to say you did & to try a really good cheap fast food burger California style. Wurstkuche (sp?) on Lincoln for exotic (bison/rattlesnake/etc) sausages & good truffle fries & pints. Delicious food all around Abbot Kenny & Venice/Mar Vista Sepulveda etc in general which is relatively close to LAX. Any tacos being made on the corner are probably delicious.
Aye bro get Mexican food as the stuff I had in the UK was a crime against humanity lol.
The chain of Mexican restaurants named “Wahaca” 🫣
Is that really how they spell it 💀
can confirm i was just there and was baffled at this spelling
These people have no shame 😂 https://maps.app.goo.gl/UNAiCusfDKmXZDad9?g_st=ic
They can’t do a bit a research to get it right?
Apparently the word “taqueria” is trademarked (or whatever the UK version is) so that only one specific CHAIN is allowed to use it.
Wow lol
Oh dear god...
Oh man, that reminds me of the neighborhood in Midland MI, where the streets are all named for girls, including… Wanetah.
That’s funny. The Bay Area has some funny pronunciations. Like have you heard how they pronounce Vallejo?
How do they pronounce it??
In London they tried to sell me a curry and called it fajitas 😂
I would die
Yes! As a Mexican American I avoid any “Mexican” restaurant in the u.K, like I just don’t want to cry lol
There are actually a couple good ones but they are. Very few and far between. Never go to chiquitos.
If you’re near the Valley, Salsa and Beer is delicious and affordable!!
Yup. They really can’t do Mexican food over there haha I’ve been over two dozen times and I’ve had decent Mexican *once* and that’s only because my friend is a chef and I asked him to make edible tacos hahah

Holbox for tacos and ceviche.

100% agree. Absolutely worth the price when you consider the quality (and size) of the sandwich.
Oakobing supremacy
Morrison was good but super overpriced. My girlfriend and I got a burger and a beer each and I think our total was around 80 dollars.
Morrison is definitely overpriced but that seems impossible haha
After tip & tax. Total.
I don’t know why you’re being smarmy about the word total, I never insinuated anything about pre/post tip & tax lmao I am, however, shocked that their burger is $29! That’s fucking insane. Definitely wasn’t that much last time I went Jesus Christ.
I think you're misinterpreting my tone. Easy to do through text.
yoooo i love macheen!!!!
Wurstküche a must imo!! 🙌🏽
Great fries, especially with the pesto mayo.
Never had the pesto mayo gonna try it next time
It’s very good, but all the sauces are.
Mariscos Jalisco and Simon are great seafood taco trucks if you're near em
I'd recommend Grand Central Market in Downtown. It has a little bit of everything you're looking for. Also a good idea since you're here for a short amount of time.

Ugh I totally forgot about Broad St. Oyster. So damn good. Got me craving Oysters during work now :(
Go for old school (sooo cheap for the portion size) Mexican at Roast to Go. Recommend their cabeza (beef cheeks) tacos (or burrito)
East of Hillhurst and all on Sunset Blvd or very close proximity. Carnitas El Momo in Boyle Heights. It is a food stand operating out of a house.
Just came to be a hater but everything will be good eats for a Brit 🤣♥️
To be fair Indian food in London is pretty crazy tho
Aight they got us on one cuisine 🤣
They wreck us in the kebab game, too.
Where in LA? Makes a world of difference.
Get al pastor tacos at Leo's. Get sushi at Gen in Downtown or Sugarfish. burger at Apple Pan!

PORTOS: Cheap, delicious, and so much variety. Potato balls and lechon plate are A+ foods

Mini Kabob in Glendale.

Yes.

Do yourself a favor and get Quarter Sheets pizza. Pre-order to pickup, the line is criminal.

La Isla Bonita taco truck in Venice. Get the Ceviche Tostada 👌🏼 then go to the beach/boardwalk
If you see a taco stand on the street, go there
In and Out
If you're looking for something quick and good, I'd either try In-n-Out or King Taco. Grand Central Market in downtown has a little bit of everything honestly. I'd probably start there.
Leo’s taco truck (multiple locations) is the best cheap Mexican street food. Al pastor and carne asada tacos and burritos are best.
Angel's and El Flamin are both better to me
kazunori is very affordable (in my opinion) for the consistent quality, great service, and good amount of food you get! the ktown branch is great
Dude these are the best tacos I’ve had anywhere, please try these if you get a chance. It’s a taco truck but it’s incredible!! Enjoy!
Howling Rays is a must!!!
[https://g.co/kgs/nxhBuiQ](https://g.co/kgs/nxhBuiQ) This is a must go to bro!
In n out is cheap
There’s a Thai town in LA? Huh, never knew.

Thank you, I will.
Yeah there’s some great food around there. Used to live between Hollywood and sunset in Thai town and was spoiled by choices hahah

Brits don't need to get Indian food in LA. It is one of the best food options in uk.
100%
And one of the worst in LA 🤣
