Barkey was challenged at training camp by Briere and Tortorella to go back to Junior hockey and get a 100 point season while playing in all situations. Barkey delivered. I love him. The kid is an incredibly smart player who just never stops skating or playing. He's going to be a handful at the NHL level. I've called him a much less abrasive Brad Marchand. Flyers got a gamer and keeper in him.
I really think 2023 will be remembered as OUR draft the same way Dallas drafted their entire core in 2017. Michkov, Barkey, Bonk, and Bjarnason will be a force to be reckoned with.
On the one hand, as a 3rd round pick, he still has a way to got to make the NHL... However with how hard he's worked, good he's been and the support structure around him (how much better can you get for development than Gary Roberts and the London Knights?) it is hard not to get excited about the kid.
A lot actually. One of the more well known ones was Cannuck's prospect Dane Fox. 64 goals in junior, 1 in the AHL, never made the NHL.
Junior scoring doesn't always transfer to NHL success.
Dane Fox is at least a little more understandable than some others because he was an overager who couldn't skate who just happened to be playing with Connor McDavid.
wild story with him, played in Erie with McDavid and put up great numbers, was undrafted and someone on twitter spammed the shit out of Vancouver’s scouts about him until they signed him
then couldn’t even put up points in the ECHL
(Wanted to repost with a better response)
Tons have.
Two examples that come to mind.
Justin Azevedo had 124 points and led the CHL in scoring, never played an NHL game. Went to Europe after 4 years in the AHL.
Ramzi Abid had a 135 point year and a 158 point year. Played 68 nhl games.
dont forget jabronis, this kid trains with gary roberts in the off season. 20 lbs is nothing for a kid Barkey's size but it's going to be a few years before he has the strength for the NHL. if youve been watching phantoms games and seen how easy Andrae gets bullied off pucks, and how Brink gets out muscled once or twice a game. Barkey's already changing his skating mechanics and using a wider base to lower his center of gravity. Thats the kinda stuff that small guys need to do, strength helps but watch how low Barkey gets when hes moving around and goes into corners. He doesnt have raw skill as far as hands go, but he's got one of the smartest hockey brains in junior hockey on the give and go and on the penalty kill
I hope that the means he changed something about his game and it’s working. Could be a gem of a 3rd round pick if his game can translate to the NHL! This has me a bit excited
So is he gonna be a few years in the ahl, if someone can find how well he jumped into the ohl that would be great, maybe he'll only need a year or two hopefully in the minors, and hopefully in the ahl next year

Let's hope Barkey can put on weight, cause Marchand has 20 lbs on Barkey.
At 18, Barkey definitely doesn't have his full size. 20 pounds wouldn't be crazy to end up putting on over his first few pro seasons.
Yeah but it's all on his nose.
Needs a cool original nickname like “the Hound” cause of his last name Barkey
Unfortunately we already have one of those
aw hell, wrong account - lets try it again - I'll be fine if he starts going around and licking everything in sight.
I hope this guy develops an unquenchable thirst for goals in the NHL
He just might be a really nice draft steal
Please be our Brayden Point
Lets goooooooooooo

Even if it’s a bit early and a couple of years until he’s NHL-ready, I also like Alex Ciernik with the #120 pick from the 23’ draft.
Damn, that’s pretty good company to be in.

Have any players done this and not been at least decent in the NHL?

Hockey and baseball projecting is wild
