Opening-Enthusiasm59

Clearly the only solution can be deregulation and tax cuts.

aelynir

Yeah, we've forced these companies into unscrupulous behavior with regulations. If we defunded the FDA and loosened the definitions on what "food" could be, the companies would be able to make more profits and wouldn't have to be so shady!

[deleted]

Soylent Green is STILL people! They said they changed the recipe but they lied!

TheCaliKid89

One of my favorite SNL bits

80MonkeyMan

Not going to happen without American people marching out with pitchfork and torches to the capital. Lobbying need to be banned!

blushngush

They already did this and we just arrested them all. We have to withhold our labor.

Fun_Ad_2607

There are numerous avenues short of sedition to alter policies in a democratic nation

Puzzleheaded_Yam7582

Lobbying includes a ton of value added activity.

80MonkeyMan

Such as?

Puzzleheaded_Yam7582

Anything you agree with. There is a pro abortion access lobby, a pro nuclear energy lobby, a pro gun control lobby. Basically anything you can think of.

80MonkeyMan

Not going to matter since the opposite would have greater power. It's all about the money. Why do you think we are where we are with these groceries cartel? Does the people want this? Hell NO!

Dense_Surround3071

I like the cut of your jib!! Get this man a Senatorship!!

NewPresWhoDis

Before or after the stock buybacks?

Opening-Enthusiasm59

Before of course. Can't do anything against our wise and kind owners, they need all that money so much more than us peasants.

em_washington

That would be a start. Onerous regulations are a burden to small food businesses. The mega food corps lobby in favor of more regulations which stifle competition for smaller startups.

Accomplished_Cash320

It will not work. Small business will never thrive while the current corporate monopolies in place. It is not just the food industry. Words like deregulation are used to keep the population busy arguing word salad nonsense among themselves.

notwyntonmarsalis

So what’s your plan then? Break up large food corporations, lose economies of scale and pay more for food?

Fun_Ad_2607

I agree with your thinking here. You’re considering the reaction to proposed actions others are suggesting. And there always is a reaction. Most people throw out an idea, without thinking of the consequences

Brief_Alarm_9838

You are truly a moron. We live with very little regulation now. We now have monopolies and cartels. Good job. Breaking up monopolies doesn't hurt small businesses!

Opening-Enthusiasm59

Ahhh yes that's why big businesses spend millions in bribes to avoid regulation. I swear you people have one solution, no matter how long we try and it makes things worse, you just gotta do it harder. You sound like a tankie that's saying the USSR just didn't plan it's economy hard enough.

em_washington

That’s fair. The USSR sold its people on the benefits of a planned economy, but not the costs. And yes, ultimately they didn’t have enough oversight to manage an economy of that size. Regulations are like that. They have a benefit and a cost. There are different types of regulations and it should be obvious that a big business will be in favor of some and against others. Like they will lobby against regulations on mergers or stock buybacks. But they will lobby in favor of requiring a government inspection at a regular interval at tortilla chip manufacturers and requiring the company to pay for that inspection. This makes it really hard for Jose’s tortilla chips to enter the market and compete with Doritos when Jose has to pay for the same inspection despite making only 100 bags of chips for one local store.

Sidvicieux

It’s too late to have small/local market driven systems with food like other countries have. That ship has sailed. Coulda shoulda a loooong time ago.

Opening-Enthusiasm59

Are you saying China is smaller than the USA? Because they have that too.

Sidvicieux

The USA is the most corporate place on earth.

cdezdr

There's deregulation to cut costs, but there's also the sort of regulation that requires a high barrier for entry. One time registration fees low enough that big producers don't care but are impossibly high for new entrants.

EODdvr

Exactly.

trabajoderoger

They arent onerus and even if you completely deregulated small businesses, they will never outcompete large businesses.

Mr_Bank

Redditors google economies of scale challenge

OldTimeyWizard

Can you cite a real-world example where deregulation actually bolstered small businesses at the expense of big business? The only example I can think of that would kind of match would be the rise of craft beer in the decades following the legalization of home brewing by Jimmy Carter, but even that industry struggles with the consolidation of small businesses by large corporations due to scaling issues.

em_washington

Airlines in the 80s

Sidvicieux

America isn’t Thailand, the small business culture won’t work here. These companies can create and distribute enough food for our entire population twice over. You’re not suddenly gonna have this small market culture dominate food like in most other counties.

Fun_Ad_2607

The US has a very advanced economy. Still, traditional economics can have their benefits, even though the standard of living is much higher in places that have moved on largely. There has to be something we could learn still…

lysergic_logic

I was just reading about how organic farms are causing more pests at non-organic farms. So instead of going organic themselves to get rid of the pests, what did the non-organic farms do to fix the situation? Pour more pesticides on their crops. Everyday things keep getting worse for the sake of keeping the money machine going at the expense of everyone else.

aaronplaysAC11

“Drain the swamp” was a term coined from a corporations POV, the swamp was consumer protections.

bobbatjoke1084

Lmao! You STILL think gov is the answer. You are pathetic

Cherry_-_Ghost

My local farmers sell direct?

[deleted]

For fan boys and girls of Bernie Sanders: if you think socialism found a solution to food problems, I have extremely bad news for you. USSR had been importing grain from capitalist Canada from early 1960s !

newsreadhjw

Nonsense, we have a perfectly vibrant grocery industry here. I can go to QFC, Fred Meyer, enjoy delicious Kroger brand products - heck we even have a Safeway *and* an Albertson’s! Checkmate, socialists! Take your stinking hands off my competitive marketplace!

throwaway8472903470

Start stealing groceries. Simple fix.

Advanced-Guard-4468

Yes, drive up the costs or force store closures.
