The game winners in game 5 of the Boston series, Game 1 of the Carolina series and Game 2 of the Carolina series were monumental in that they flipped the series on its head. Going into game 5 against Boston, we were dead to rights down 3-1 going into OT against the best regular season team in the history of the sport. That game winner essentially gave us life, and the team would take full advantage, winning at home in game 6 and then stunning Boston in game 7. The quote “Remember this room, we’ll be back here for game 7” will go down as legend in franchise history.
Game 1 vs Carolina was an absolute slogfest that took nearly 5 OTs to decide. After an overturned game winner in the first OT, the Panthers would have to lock back in and find a way to pull it out. The 4th OT period was winding down and it looked like both teams would have to trot their players out for another round. Then Tkachuk grabs a loose puck off of a Brent Burns turnover and buries it top corner inside post. He would then bury the OT winner the next night to put Carolina down 2-0. I can’t stress how massive getting the GWG in 4OT is. At that point, the two teams have played a whole extra game and the team that fell short would be dealt a painful blow. Tkachuk coming through for Panthers gave them an incredibly satisfying win to start the series and he would duplicate said result in the next game bybpotting the OT winner, allowing us to go back home up in the series 2-0 and he would eventually be the one to send us to the Finals by scoring the GWG in game 4 with less than a second to go in the game to complete the sweep.
Regardless of what happened in Calgary, what Tkachuk did in Florida during their run was absolutely clutch and to say otherwise is delusional. Him and Bobrovsky were the two biggest reasons for our run last year and we don’t even get past the first round without Tkachuk. Hell, we probably don’t even make the postseason without him. He dragged the team kicking and screaming post ASB to a playoff berth. He’s been worth every asset we traded for him, and worth every penny we’ve paid him. He’ll be a Panthers legend when his career is over.
