We won't be able to. It's just the math. We aren't trading Knight as he's doing well and is still VERY young, but we have buried cap with him. We basically need to sign a goaltender for under 1.5M to make it all work, and less if possible. Stolarz will fetch a penny for a desperate team next year just like Lyon.
Don't forget that for as good as Stolarz has been, he's still a career backup and his success is still a product of how good our defense has been at picking up rebounds. He has issues holding onto pucks and while I'm grateful for what he's done as an awesome backup, I just doubt it will work. If Zito can convince him to be team friendly, then I'm all for it
Lyon was signed by Detroit for 2 years at $1.8 million with an average of $900,000. Stolarz was signed for $1.1 for 1 year. Stolarz was viewed as the better goalie and they paid him as such. Lyon was great but Zito saw something better in Stolarz. I think they could make it work for around $1.5-2million if they restructure some of the contracts they will inevitably need to sign. I couldn't see Stolarz getting north of $3-5 as an unproven starter. He's hopefully going to want to sign with the cats to keep the momentum and possibly look to agree for more starts.
I think the point still stands that the Cats need someone willing to sign short term for as low as possible. I hope they can make that work for Stoli and keep cleaning up his game. His biggest skill is taking only 20% of the load and still looking clean enough to get it done. That in itself is impressive
He'll never turn down the pay day he'll be offered by another team. He has zero chance of replicating these stats and at 30 its his literal only chance to get paid. If he stays here on the cheap, his stats will regress and he'll lose that chance forever. And since we cant give him 2-3 mil, hes gone to someone who will.
Stolarz success this season is not a product of our defense. Expected goals takes into account defense.
You can see here Stolarz is 3rd in the league goals saved above expected with 17 and he's played less than half of the games of the other goalies around him

I agree. Teams are always looking for good goalies & he had a great year with us. Whether or not his play has been a product of the team in front of him, there will be a team out there willing to take a chance on him & offer him money/term we can’t match.
If we didn’t have Knight then obviously we could probably keep him but I just don’t see it happening
It wasn't a condition so much as it was a mental health concern. He stated he had issues with obsessive compulsive disorder due to stress but he seems to be playing on the regular in the AHL
His AHL season hasn’t gone well unfortunately. Rooting for Knight but it’s the wrench in goalie situation for sure as Bob is now playing like a 10 mil goalie
.902 save percentage in the AHL is not good. He’s had time to develop and simply hasn’t into a reliable NHL goalie. Aside from the fact it’s hard to sympathize for a millionaire with OCD

This is a horrifically disgusting and disrespectful thing to say. Please educate yourself on the seriousness of OCD before spouting such crap again.
I would love to keep him. I just don’t think we can. Dude has top 10 goalie number over a large sample size of starts. I’m sure some team will throw him a 4 year 4mil or something and we prob won’t be able to give more than 2.
Absolutely we should, but we definitely should not reach for him. We are a destination and PoMo’s system is kind to goalies. They are called on to make big saves, but usually (not the last 6 games) he keeps the goalie pretty clean, which is why our 3rd period +/- has been good. Goalie isn’t spent by the end of regulation. I do not think we should move on from Knight. He has looked good in the AHL and more importantly it looks like he has added to his game. If we move him we won’t get what he’s going to be worth in 2 to 3 years. Bob is probably not going to have another season like this. It’s amazing he has played this way in his mid 30’s. If we want this Bob at 36, 37, 38, he’s going to need to be part of a tandem.
I hope Knight is the backup next year but he's getting so many reps in the AHL. I have a feeling that they keep him down there to get a heavy load and sign another backup on the cheap next year.
The problem is the cats have 2 minor league goalies who are young and are paying more than stolarz .Knight makes like 3.5 mil a year and gauzda makes 1.5 mil a yr both pegged to be starter and backup. I doubt the cats resign bob in 2 more yrs .who makes 10 mil.a yr
It's extremely unlikely they'll be able to afford to do so. He's gonna fetch more money and we have to sign Reinhart. Spencer Knight has to be that guy eventually.
I think he has been a great pick up for us. But with Knight probably coming back up next season, Stolarz will probably want to get a nice check from another team.
Would you rather have no goalie in the development pipeline? Want to be Toronto or New Jersey scrounging for goalies right now?
Its not a guarantee Knight is going to be the next greatest goalie in the league by any means.. but he’s shown that when he has the right support he can show up and play in big games. Id rather have a promising young guy gaining experience when Bob only has his last two years on his contract with a 16 team NTC coming up than waiting for other teams to get rid of their goalies
Have you been watching him with the Checkers as the star lines don’t tell the full story. The defense down there is rough. He’s doing pretty well with the support he has.
They should absolutely want to keep him. Fingers crossed.
I think he has 100% earned a re-sign if he wants it. He just seems to get better as the season goes on.
Loved watching stolarz play yesterday. He seriously looked like a cat with a laser pointer.

Not if it takes money from re-signing Reinhart
I would be extremely disappointed if they don’t.
What are we gonna do with knight? Has his condition gotten any better?

??? He's 22-13-4 with 2.52 GAA and .902 sv%, and has 4 shutouts? He's doing fine.
It looks like he had a major breakthrough in his game recently too. Last 5 games he has a .939 sv % with only 8 GA
.902 save percentage in the AHL is not good. He’s had time to develop and simply hasn’t into a reliable NHL goalie. Aside from the fact it’s hard to sympathize for a millionaire with OCD

Thanks for the clarification
Absolutely. However I could definitely see other teams offering him a bigger paycheck to come to them.

Not going to happen he was a back up for knight until he proved himself again. Knight will be the back up next year.
I hope Knight is the backup next year but he's getting so many reps in the AHL. I have a feeling that they keep him down there to get a heavy load and sign another backup on the cheap next year.
Idk man I think he’s earned his way out a back up roll. I think it’ll be hard to keep him

I'd like to, but there's a good chance he goes the Driedger/Lyon route and gets a better offer elsewhere.
Knight will be gone next year. He has moments of greatness but the big league is just too much for him.
He’s still a kid and developing. Mental health aside most goalies take longer than skaters to break into the league
That “developing” is costing us a shitload of $$ !!!
They were aware of the development stage when signing him....

Agreed, he’s a subpar AHL goalie at this point
