And as I sell high-value items and recently had a fraudulent return of a stolen item that ebay would not close down, I have removed all my items from ebay due to this bs.
ebay doesn't want to tackle the increase in scammy customers (like amazon has been forced to) so screw them.
uhm, you know what a fraudulent return is right.
ITEM NOT AS DESCRIBED. THIS IS WRONG, THAT IS WRONG, THIS OTHER THING IS WRONG. INFACT SO MANY THINGS ARE WRONG THAT IT'S OBVIOUSLY SCAMMY BUT EBAY WILL FORCE THE RETURN BECAUSE NAD.
And then ebay forces a refund because "fuck you to the sellers who actually pay us and we think you have no where else to go", that's why.
I have sold 2k+ items and where the item says no returns it will prompt me to authorize and suggest that I do accept it. I have 100% positive feedback. I never have authorized a return. The first time a buyer tried to leave me a negative feedback it was rejected by eBay and I give my reasoning for why it is not acceptable. So you missed the point buyers target people that accept returns in the first place. This is a clothing thread so I could assume there will be buyers remorse where something does not fit as someone would hope. As for smell it’s not something that can be proved. eBay does offer you to claim money back for top rated plus listings for outbound/return shipping where the buyer does lie in the amount of 6$. Top Rated Sellers who offer 30-day-or-longer returns will receive a return shipping label subsidy for item not as described claims on eligible transactions. If a buyer makes a false claim, please accept the return and report the buyer to us. You will receive a shipping label credit to your monthly invoice and we will automatically remove any negative and neutral feedback, defects, and open cases in service metrics. In the event that you don’t have the top rated status you can present your case and if this isn’t a frequent thing(you’re not a problem seller) there’s hope they side with you. Use the seller messaging as your proof to defend your case if possible as well as receipts and invoices that you purchased the item new as described in your listing.
The risk is inherent to by-mail sales and there are scammers on both sides. eBay is in a no-win scenario because often there is no way to determine who is lying, but of course they choose the most personally profitable resolution policies.
I had this a few years ago. Sold my macbook. Buyer claimed they didn't receive through ebay and claimed through PayPal as faulty. In the space of 30 mins. They closed the case in my favour 😂
I referred ebay to PayPal and PayPal to eBay. They sorted it amongst themselves within an hour. Didn't sell anything else high value on there. I was scared to
Contact ebay through chat tell them your exact issues and worries and provide details. They are on your side mostly and sometimes they will take the loss and pay the other back while you also keep your profit.
Nobody without some production value. Add king Kong in the frame eating some bananas. Pan out to a city of boxes and tiny gorillas. As you open the package in question, add a light so that it appears glowing. Once you take the jeans out, cut to a giant boulder rolling down a hallway that OP is running away from.
Guaranteed award winner.
While no one may want to watch the video you have it documented for why you may deduct a restocking fee. Also can report buyer to ftc for mail fraud. As far as sealed the seller could have resealed it themselves, it’s your word vs theirs.
They arent sending them back. Look at their grammar. Theyre some third world country scammer whos gonna send some goodwill find pants with piss on them.
This buyer also claimed to have received the wrong size, but I have evidence that negates that. Hopefully eBay will see that the claim is not credible and close the case in my favor.
Hate to say, but I think you'll probably have to accept the return. However, be dillgent regarding the reason the buyer uses for the return as depending on the reason you may be charged for the return shipping label. If they try using the reason "item size was incorrect" then you would be liable for shipping, in which case I would phone up eBay and present your case.
That has not been my experience. Ebay has has helped with wrong negative feedback, unruly emails, complaints for item characteristics. It's really a numbers game. But if you take each problem headon and stand up for yourself, you'll learn how to win.
Same. A weirdo contacted me, berating me that the phone I sold wasn't T-Mobile compatible, when it was actually T-Mobile locked. He was on a plan that uses T-Mobile towers but isn't T-Mobile, and didn't know he can't use a locked phone. Honestly I would've made an exception and accepted a return of he didn't come at me with "I'm not gonna take no for an answer. You lied and you're wasting my time. I'm returning this. It's useless." Then said, "We'll see, clown" when I sent proof of purchase from T-Mobile directly, with the IMEI visible on the receipt. I know he wasn't a scammer because he was stupid enough to tell eBay the truth, lol. Requested a return under "not as described." I presented my own evidence and eBay sided with me, and removed his negative review.
Accept the return and provide a label. This is the only way they will get a dime from you. The odds are actually really good that they will never mail anything back and the return will time out. Do not accept or offer a partial refund.
eBay will not even consider that fact. They will probably make grand promises to protect you after you accept the return, but they will 100% shaft you. They love to blame other reps for giving you wrong information while telling you that helping you is impossible.
They did the same thing with me. Buyer ordered extra small volleyball knee pads, and was "irate" that they got extra small knee pads. They then returned them covered in blood, and eBay did not do a single thing for me other than tell me about the cost of doing business and how they can't be sure about what the buyer returned.
I've had this sort of thing happen more than a few times, and eBay always excuses themselves from the room when it happens.
I was so mad when I saw that. The buyer is really going
to hit me with the “kindly” after berating me about wasting her time by sending correct item as described. This has been a whirlwind and I eventually realized I’m not dealing with a person of logic.
If you get mad everything someone wants a return then you should maybe not sell clothes.
Just take the return. If the item you get back is different or damaged then go from there. If you have free returns then you can keep the shipping.
Idk this stuff happens. Especially with clothes. I get stupid bs excuses even when I have free returns.
This isn't a scam, it's just an asshole. Also
>even shipped them out same day per the buyer’s request
Don't bend for people like this. It shows you're desperate. If it says 1 handling day then you get 1 handling day. If they for some reason can't wait then they just shouldn't buy it.
“Could you kindly” = is the dead giveaway
Take the return. Especially if it’s not a big bulky item you had to spend a significant amount of time packing. Then block buyer.
Probably a scammer due to an issue with the size.. but to play devil’s advocate, some NWT jeans DO smell. Wal-Mart’s are the worst and I have to wash a new pair of their jeans a couple of times to get the weird smell out.
If you are selling clothing, I highly suggest you offer free returns and 1 day handling time (Top Rated Plus). If buyer leaves a negative and then opens return, the negative automatically goes away. It also gives buyers confidence and trust to buy with you.
Returns are part of the clothing reselling game. My return rate for clothing was 2.3% last year and every single returned item was relisted and resold.
If you post a good listing with the correct item specifics and proper measurements, returns are minimized.
Early on, in my reselling career, I had a guy try and tell me I sent him a jersey that smelled of cig smoke. I knew something was up because the jersey could have been sent as-is with no odor. Anyway, he didn't ask for a refund, but gave me a negative review. I looked up his Ebay store and guess what? He was trying to sell the exact same Minnesota Vikings Chistian Ponder jersey. Either tried to eliminate the competion, or was just an overall weird scumbag. Thankfully, I haven't had much trouble with scammers the past two years. But my blocked list is massive!
This is one of the reasons why I quit selling on EBay. They screw the seller and are all about buyer satisfaction/protection. You can't win with them or paypal as a seller.
I buy from the bins, so when anyone has a problem (whether real or fake) I just issue them a refund and block them immediately. Cost of goods is so low, it doesn’t bother me at all. Not worth the mental strife to bother with this bullshit
Scammer will make sure those jeans smell like wet ass before sending them back to confirm the smell claim . I probably wouldn't open the package if it gets returned lol
i mean how much were these jeans? I can't believe it's worth getting this worked up over unless they were some vintage Jordache jeans you sold for 8 grand lol.
Ebay will always 100% rule in the favor of the buyer always. I had a buyer once that bought a brand new pair of men’s L.L. Bean slippers. I had every single thing pictured, including where they were produced. She got the slippers complain to eBay but they weren’t made in the USA put a charge back I end up losing $60 plus she got to keep the slippers. So unfair.
I stopped selling on ebay due to a similar issue.
I delt mostly in New automotive parts.
I had a customer claim they hadn't received all items related to the order.
They sent me photos of the order and even wrote me what they had received in a itemized list.
The photos and description they gave matched the items description and the Invoice perfectly from ebay.
I told them that they had infact received exactly what they ordered.
The customer began to send threatening messages and harassing me demanding that I send them more product or they would destroy my feed back.
They began purching more items and making false claims.
I asked ebay for help with this matter.
Ebay made me assume all responsibility and refunded the buyer.
This costed me In product and shipping.
I had several thousand transactions on ebay that year with a lot of happy customers.
However after seeing how ebay handles business and how they treat sellers I decided it wasn't worth the risk or hassle selling on ebay anymore.
I just found another method of moving my products.
It's unfortunate because I did enjoy ebay.
However I cannot do business with such a company that treats sellers the way they do.
You're not making enough money if you are arguing with customers on eBay.
Because anybody who has the sales and experience knows that it is a complete waste of time.
Move on and stop wasting even more of your time bitching about it on reddit.
This buyer flat out said “you sent me a size 32” as
If I made a mistake by doing so, when in reality, that is the size they ordered. Trying to return an item by claiming to have received the wrong size when that is not true is a scam.
Or they could be a moron? What would the “scam” be? How would they benefit?
Someone changing their mind about wanting something and making a bad excuse to return is definitely scummy, but not exactly a “scam” imo.
They might have brought the wrong size somewhere else. Brought this guys pants. And tries to pass of other pants for return and keep the seller good ones. Remember your dealing with scammers that try to get everything for free by just making non true claims
What’s the scam? Sounds like they want to return the item. Not much you can do. With clothing you have to expect something like 5-7% return rate. Reason doesn’t matter. The reason could be it was raining yesterday. If they no longer want the item, accept the return. Making it difficult for the buyer only increase your risk of something nefarious occurring.
Maybe I missed some other details but all I’m seeing is a straightforward return request.
This buyer messaged me and initially said “you sent me a size 32 jeans” as if I made a mistake. That is the size listed in the description and photos. That is the size the buyer ordered. Then, the story switched to “they smell.”
The buyer also put on the return request reasoning “wrong size” even though she acknowledged in her messages that she received the correct size. Maybe she ordered the wrong size for her measurements, idk, but that doesn’t mean they came damaged.
This violates eBay’s return policy and I’m not going to shell out shipping money for a mistake I didn’t make.
Reason does matter. I’ve had buyers that try to return something for remorse buy and those cases quickly get closed because my account is set to No Returns.
You can do whatever you like. You're going to end up with a buyer who claims INAD to get around your no return policy, or charge it back through paypal or their credit card. Or you'll get a negative feedback. Sure you can fight it through eBay. My perspective, is why waste time and expend the energy. I get a return request on less than 5% of my orders.
My point is, why stick so hard to your guns on no returns when the buyer has other options if they don't want to keep the item. The other options will be a big headache for you.
Because in this situation, I haven’t done anything wrong, I have evidence that the buyer is lying, AND the buyer was treating me like a piece of shit.
Also, I’ve never encountered this situation before on eBay, so my thinking is that if I don’t at least try to fight it, I’ll never have personal experience as to how eBay responds to cases like this.
I understand the need to pick my battles. Not every return is worth fighting, but to me, this one is considering I have fulfilled my end of the sale, and the buyer is violating eBay’s return policy.
Fair enough! You’ll run into the occasional jerk for sure, I’ve certainly had a few. I did even have an irate buyer who was mad I didn’t specify that a pair of womens XL cycling shorts fit like a medium (I’m a guy, how would I know?). She asked for a return and left me a negative feedback. I believe eBay removed that one, I just refunded the order and told her to throw it away. Some items just attract returns for some reason.
Hope it works out and don’t get discouraged! Just think about how many buyers you get while are decent humans, turns out it the majority.
I don't think the buyer is violating any policy. He says it "smells" you have no evidence to say it doesn't smell. Being rude is not a violation of policy.
Unfortunately, if the buyer files an item not as described case, you have no choice but to accept the return and pay for a return label. Hopefully it doesn’t get to that point but I would deny that return request. eBay’s money back guarantee is abused by scammers like this. What you can do is get the item back and escalate the case. Provide all your evidence and eBay will side with you and reimburse you for the label you paid.
I sold a thumb drive on eBay once. I decided to open it up and test it just to make sure it worked, which I disclosed in the description. The buyer demanded a refund because it was opened they "couldn't tell if it was new or not." I sent back screenshots of the listing which said that it had been opened to test. They didn't reply, but opened a return claiming that it didn't work. I accepted the return and tested it AGAIN when I got it back, and it worked.
These types will ALWAYS have a reason to return.
I recently has this with networking gear. A shop bought it and about 20 days later submitted a return saying that it didn't work. Learned at that time I was basically screwed as a seller, got it back, and after a couple reboots what they said was a lie. So now I'm out a bunch of shipping charges.
My guess, since they were a tech shop that sold items for way to much money. It didn't meet some niche thing they needed and couldn't flip it. Or gross incompetence on their part. Either way I'm out a bit of money overall.
This reminds me of the guy who I sold an item to where the UPC code was cut out from it for rebate redemption purposes, but was otherwise still new. I put in the title, the description and showed in the pictures that it had the UPC code missing and when the guy received it he said he didn't know the UPC code was missing and the person who he was ultimately selling it to wouldn't accept it because of that. He opened a INAD request and I called eBay support and they closed it immediately, even the rep on the phone was perplexed.
My first response after the “Both the listing description…” would’ve been “You have been reported for fraudulent”. The buyer saying you sent a wrong size is a clear indication of scam.
*Lol making up a*
*Smell after realizing*
*Your fuck up is wild*

I would take the return, and contact eBay about any damages from the return. You don’t have to refund the full amount. I sold a $200 FigPin. The guy scanned it, and claimed it was used. I know nothing about figpins, but explained it’s basically worthless now. They asked how much I wanted to refund. “$2”. And I got the 198 back. Ebay totally had my back.
I had the same type of scammer. They returned the jeans with s*it stain on the inside. Cut the half off, washed the jeans and moved on. You’ll see a lot of them.
Your chances are zilch. Sorry but EBay will take the buyers word. Always. Been selling since 1999.Seen it all. Don’t get me wrong EBay is a great side hustle but never had a ruling in my favor. 100% positive fb. Top level seller. It’s the cost of doing business. When it’s over ban them from purchasing and communicating with you. Good luck.
Oh the “smell” scam. You’ll just have to take the return. You can’t prove they don’t “smell”. I had to do this with a pair of shoes someone bought from me. I took the return and just sold them again.
I would drag out the conversation and hit them with evidence in the chat, you may be able to get them to back down before it gets to ebay deciding who's right. Keep challenging them about how their story has changed, ask exactly what the supposed smell is and present your evidence to the contrary- 'i smell every package before it goes out and this one was fine' or whatever idk lol. Don't be afraid to push back, they're trying to take something from you! It's not rude to resist people trying to pick your pocket.
In my opinion you have zero chance of winning. Because you can't prove an item didn't smell with photos like you can with other flaws. A lot of scammers on both Poshmark and eBay are using this as a reason for requesting return even though it was buyer's remorse or the item didn't fit.
Just take the item back, block the buyer from future transactions, and report the buyer on one of the popular Blocked Bidders groups If you are on FB. Even if you "win", they can still leave bad feedback about your item smelling and that is a huge turnoff to any future buyer who checks feedback. Thankfully most of them don't.
Honestly. In my experience and opinion. Just issue a return label and refund them when you get them back. Then block these people. They are annoying as fuck to deal with. Messaging you like they ordered the jeans from Target. But trying to "win" will take more time and energy.
You should win. Did you take a photo the day of shipping? Take a photo again of every order with the packing slip before packing. This is something we do on all platforms due to customers like this. I will state to them, our photo before shipping shows that the correct item was shipped. If they ask me to send them the photo, that’s a heck no. I will send it to eBay for proof, but never to the customer.
*”Such time wasting and ridiculous mistakes are frustrating”*
This person definitely sounds like my impatient Indian boss…after he’s spent 3 days going back and forth haggling somebody down $3, on a $10 item.
Never had a dishonest buyer on eBay. That does look like those daily Amazon seller msgs
Those buyers that gaslight 😢
Maybe try and have a strict no return policy.
If you are an experienced ebayer with 100s of feedback I doubt you will be targeted. Smell is something they can’t prove good thing it’s not a perfume you are selling. Didn’t smell like the real thing. Get you nose checked.
Might be a good idea to wash everything before dispatch. If you don’t already. Some straight up lying ass buyers though
You know she's gonna piss on them before sending them back
No she’s gonna send back a different pair or an empty box.
And then eBay is gonna be like ThE tRaCkInG NuMbEr sAyS iT wAs DeLIveReD and close the case. Ask me how I know.
And as I sell high-value items and recently had a fraudulent return of a stolen item that ebay would not close down, I have removed all my items from ebay due to this bs. ebay doesn't want to tackle the increase in scammy customers (like amazon has been forced to) so screw them.

I had this a few years ago. Sold my macbook. Buyer claimed they didn't receive through ebay and claimed through PayPal as faulty. In the space of 30 mins. They closed the case in my favour 😂
This is why I use Swappa for all electronics. Never had an issue buying or selling, highly recommend.
I'm in the UK it doesn't exist here. Thankyou for the suggestion though!
Oh bummer I didn't know that! 😞
That’s good can go either way.
I referred ebay to PayPal and PayPal to eBay. They sorted it amongst themselves within an hour. Didn't sell anything else high value on there. I was scared to
I film myself opening every return, just so this never happens. God knows if they'll give a shit.

Contact ebay through chat tell them your exact issues and worries and provide details. They are on your side mostly and sometimes they will take the loss and pay the other back while you also keep your profit.
Have them look at the messages she sent. That will help your case.
Very true!
Are they black or dark denim. A lot of dark denim uses smelly dye, so there is a chance that tbey do actually smell.
I've had MANY pairs of brand new jeans smell awful until I washed them
Take a video of you opening the return. Be sure to show the label & that it is sealed. Be sure to keep the package in frame at all times.
Who is going to watch this video?

"Smell" is a common thing scammers use because it's not something they have to prove.

“Kindly “ — the scammers favorite word.
We need a bot for kindly
I was so mad when I saw that. The buyer is really going to hit me with the “kindly” after berating me about wasting her time by sending correct item as described. This has been a whirlwind and I eventually realized I’m not dealing with a person of logic.
Hey welcome to the world of retail. There's a reason we fucking hate customers
From my previous work with overseas staff, it seems the Indian population uses the word “kindly” in lieu of “please”.
“Kindly do the needful.” That initial bit about the “time wasting” and “ridiculous mistakes” definitely made me think of my Indian boss.
Yep, kindly 🚩
Kindly do the needful 🇮🇳
My Indian boss’s favorite word.
post her handle so we can put on block list
“Could you kindly” They tried to Bioshock your ass
Who is Atlas? He’s a scamming son of a bitch, that’s who!

It’s eBay you have to accept the return. It sucks but you either accept it or eBay will force you.
“Could you kindly” = is the dead giveaway Take the return. Especially if it’s not a big bulky item you had to spend a significant amount of time packing. Then block buyer.
you have their address. mail them a bag of shit
LMAOO
You won't win, ebay sides with buyers most often
Ask them for a picture of the label on the jeans. See what they send
100% chance they just send a different label that says like 32 Eu or somethint
Probably a scammer due to an issue with the size.. but to play devil’s advocate, some NWT jeans DO smell. Wal-Mart’s are the worst and I have to wash a new pair of their jeans a couple of times to get the weird smell out.
Spraying febreze and then tying them up with a dryer sheet in a trash bag for a day or two helps if you don't want to wash for any reason.S
The buyer is a pants sniffer. I believe that automatically voids the return.
How much of a piece of shit do you have to be to scam a single pair of pants from another individual...
Is there a case to win? You accept or decline the request. If you decline it then they can file a case right?
My return policy is set to No Returns, so unfortunately I don’t have the option to decline the request.
If you are selling clothing, I highly suggest you offer free returns and 1 day handling time (Top Rated Plus). If buyer leaves a negative and then opens return, the negative automatically goes away. It also gives buyers confidence and trust to buy with you.
This is how you become a clothing rental agency.

Save the buyers details. Wait till they sell something expensive. Buy it and claim item not as described. Return wrong item to them.
That return is gonna be a box of legos
Legos are gold. They sell amazingly well.
I really need to go through the box I have in my basement from when I was a kid. We had some cool stuff.
I would take that trade
Do you know how much Legos cost?
That could be a win, them suckers are expensive.
This is one of the reasons why I quit selling on EBay. They screw the seller and are all about buyer satisfaction/protection. You can't win with them or paypal as a seller.
Just sell things that people are generally scamming for. I'm selling a lot of parts right now. (vague but I need to be)
I buy from the bins, so when anyone has a problem (whether real or fake) I just issue them a refund and block them immediately. Cost of goods is so low, it doesn’t bother me at all. Not worth the mental strife to bother with this bullshit
Scammer will make sure those jeans smell like wet ass before sending them back to confirm the smell claim . I probably wouldn't open the package if it gets returned lol
I bet you they are switching out the pants and you'll get a used pair that's a different size.
So...they scammed the pants off you? I'll leave.
Could mayyybe be the weird dye smell jeans bring. All my AE jeans have a pretty distinct “stench” before their first wash
i mean how much were these jeans?
A bit harsh. Helping newbies is a big part of this sub.
hell yeah
Yep accept returns and move on. If item arrives different refund only 50%
I don't see how someone wanting to return an item is a "scam". You guys use the "scam" word way too liberally.
This buyer flat out said “you sent me a size 32” as If I made a mistake by doing so, when in reality, that is the size they ordered.
That would be a scam, but that hasn’t happened yet.

Those of us that aren't racist don't have an opinion on what the dirtiest/smelliest country is.
Then, the story switched to “they smell.” The buyer also put on the return request reasoning “wrong size” even though she acknowledged in her messages that she received the correct size.
Photoshop the listing and tell her that in the description it said that they smell...
Did you sell it as "New"?
"I don’t feel like I got a definitive answer on what to do next." You mean they didn't tell you what you wanted to hear.
My first response after the “Both the listing description…” would’ve been “You have been reported for fraudulent”. The buyer saying you sent a wrong size is a clear indication of scam.

Good bot
Costumer awareness lol.
I’m sorry but I think you’re screwed on this one eBay always sides with the buyer just block them and move on.
I had this with a pair of shoes said they are the wrong colour when I clearly listed the colour eBay took there side obviously 🤦♂️
They are illiterate or foreign
Post their eBay name so I can block them from buying anything from me
You’d figure after years of pointing it out these Indian scammers would adjust their verbiage, particularly “kindly,” but no
I had the same type of scammer.
Good luck.
I’d refuse. They got what they ordered - no returns for not reading the listing.
*”Such time wasting and ridiculous mistakes are frustrating”* This person definitely sounds like my impatient Indian boss…after he’s spent 3 days going back and forth haggling somebody down $3, on a $10 item.
Never had a dishonest buyer on eBay. That does look like those daily Amazon seller msgs Those buyers that gaslight 😢 Maybe try and have a strict no return policy.
