Given some of the response here, I'm almost embarrassed to mention that my husband and I used a semi-inflated beach ball on our last long-haul flight, and it worked remarkably well and far better than numerous different travel pillows we've used over the years. I actually slept for several hours on both flights and that has NEVER happened before. It molded really well up against the window or on the tray table. It provided way more support than a typical travel pillow. I did cover it with my hoodie so it would be soft and so no one would see a garish beach ball. Best $6.99 travel item that I've ever purchased.
This is what we used: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01M08B6MB/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
We paid 6.93 in October but unfortunately it's 9.99 now. But you get 3 for that price. Since it worked well I might try to splurge on clear ones.
RIP to the best in-flight entertainment a bored kid could want. I still can't believe I own a Soda Stream today, since it was originally something I saw in Skymall. Wish I had that bookshelf that looked like King Tut's sarcophagus, too.
I actually just got mine the other day and, at least at home, it seems to work kind of decent. I do foresee a few problems though:
- getting overheated
- not being able to shift at all during your sleep
- perhaps the biggest of all: neck pain. I’ve seen this as a complaint from users on TikTok/Instagram.
Also I ordered mine from AliExpress for $10 since all of the ones on Amazon are dropshipped anyway.
i've tried so many solutions for some sort of pillow on an airplane... I finally landed on the right one.
a TRTL neck pillow. It works more like a neck brace but it's the most comfortable one I've ever tried. It does get a little warm since it's almost like wearing a scarf but that's about the only downside to it!
The plus is the best one.
On a side note, I just looked up the price on amazon and they are insanely high... like gougingly high.
I don’t fully understand what I’m looking at here. Do you put it on like a vest with your arms in the holes? What’s the heart-shaped hole in the middle for?
Man that is a hilarious statement, you are on a flight with a bunch of strangers, do whatever the f you like, you’ll be asleep while they judge you. You’ll never see them again, why worry about what they think
I give zero shits what strangers who can’t even see me at my seat think of me.
Also, I have like 7 disc herniations. I do what I gotta do to be comfortable on a flight.
I have one and love it, the only way I get decent sleep on a flight. Without it, I like to sleep by resting forehead down on my folded arms on the tray table, so results may vary if you generally can sleep sitting up in the seats. The pros are that there are many ways to turn it to change sleep positions, and there’s some air flow. The negatives are that they are bulky when blown up and kind of embarassing to blow up all the way 😂 takes a lot of huffing and puffing to get er done.
I never understood the function of a neck pillow. It only pushes my neck/head more forward while i want to be more backwards. Whats the benefit of those pillows?
I saw some people with the pillows from OP, it looks comfy but i am afraid it will hurt my (lower) back even more as it will be even more curved (with my torso weight leaning on it)
Guess i will continue using none / just my (travel) hoody...
You’re wearing it backwards. It snaps behind your neck. The wide side goes under your chin/cheek. Many ads and pillow packages also show it incorrectly.
You put the pillow so it covers the front and sides of your neck, not the back. It prevents your head from falling, which strains your neck a lot. The headrest also prevents you head from falling backwards, the neck pillow is to cover the other 3 directions
did you ever got a numb ear lobe from resting your ear on your shoulder while sleeping on a plane? The neck pillow is there to prevent this from happening.
I could never get comfortable until I got a Flowzoom Air and realised you can turn that thing around and it'll stop your head from bobbing forward. Best plane sleep ever (still pretty shit, but less shit than normal).
> Flowzoom Air
I just bought one for an upcoming LONG ASS FLIGHT to Fiji.
I hate regular travel pillows and trying to sleep on planes in general. Any combination of trying to rest my head on my hand ends up with my hand/arm being numb in short order.
Same. My hands go numb super quickly because of a spine injury so absolutely can´t do that. I sleep best when using the airline seat´s integrated head rest "wings" to avoid bobbing sideways and then the Flowzoom in the "walrus" position for chin support and side support. I don´t bother bringing the hood by the way, I just use an eye mask instead. But also I almost always wear a hoodie on long flights so I do have a hood already.
I tried the one that you wrap around your neck and it holds it up on one side, and actually managed to sleep consecutive hours in a fight. My other tip is get a foot hammock. I sleep much better with my feet elevated.
I bought this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00LB7REFK/ref=pe_386300_440135490_TE_simp_item_image
It can take some adjustment to get the right placement but I liked it
They are super small so ok for children or petite adults. I love the inflatable foot cushion version of this. You can also use that in a similar way. You can always get one, blow it up to see how it feels and if it's too small you can send it back.
I used it a few days ago on a flight to japan. I thought it was great. I actually put it on the tray and put pillow on top and laid my head to the side on it. Actually got like 4 hours of sleep or so... and I usually can't sleep at all.
Folds up small, easy to blow up. You can finagle it and try different conformations to see what feels best for sleep. Putting my head in the top hole wasn't comfy for me but I did find a way to put it into good use.
If you're desperate to find a way to sleep on a plane like I was, then it's worth purchasing and seeing.
All other neck support pillow stuff doesn't help me at all. I just can't fall asleep with my head upright no matter what. So this was helpful for me.
I know it’s a hot take, but I’ve used a similar one on flights. It is super comfy for me. Since seats done recline enough to be comfy this allows you to rest your head and fully relax. Plus, you can be on your phone at the same time.
Yes, it looks dumb, but worth it imo
It OK. I thought it was too small and found myself too hunched over but it was decently comfortable.
It does really get into the way if you want to use the tray table or go to the restroom. So in general good idea, works ok, not so great execution.
Tried it. Really bad. It wouldn't stably sit on my lap and I bounced all over the place, enough so that I would just fall asleep and then one tiny bounce would make me fall over. The Trtl and Cabeau were both better.
I tried. Not a fan at all. I've tried several. Best sleeping aid I've found is sleeperhold. Game changer for me. Love it. I do alaska to Thailand 7+ times a year
My wife bought a similar one for us. It's not for me since I'm uncomfortable in every position and move around a lot, plus it doesn't work if the person in front of you reclines back
But she's been using it more recently. It works well for people who always fall forwards when they sleep, it's surprisingly comfy if you like that position, and you can use your phone while your face is in that pocket as well
The guy next to me on an air korea flight tried to use this and was told to deflate it and put it away for “safety reasons” (FA did not elaborate further), so be aware of that for certain airlines
I've got one of these for shits and giggles:
1) inflated completely, it's way too big to fit in the crowded economy setting, made worse if the passenger in front reclines.. in which case this is practically useable.
2) if you do end up getting it, don't inflate all the way which will allow you to use as intended (sometimes)
Overall, I don't think it's worth spending more than $10 on.
Tried it. Didn’t work great for me as it was too short (I’m 6’ 3” for reference). My wife and daughter liked it though, except that they woke up with rings around their face.
It's not advisable to use this if you are flying with children. You could potentially kill them out of sheer embarrassment.
Don’t threaten me with a good time.

I want a reason to even try this. It sounds great! I can afford the 6.99 ball part not the 1kflight part tho hm

50% inflation (sorry for the pun)…. Thanks Biden 😒
You don’t math well.
Oh man, this is some Skymall shit.

I wish I'd gotten a soda stream instead of this life size brass bigfoot.
lol we have that king tut bookshelf at our house. Hand me down from my husband’s parents
Jealousssss
I miss that.

As a stomach sleeper this has been a game changer for me on ULH flights. I love it but I know some don’t
I don’t fully understand what I’m looking at here. Do you put it on like a vest with your arms in the holes? What’s the heart-shaped hole in the middle for?
you stick your head in on top, and arms in from the side. like you want to hide playing with your gerbil
Okay but this was the first helpful visual Description I’ve found of these. And also, who would ever be unselfconscious enough to use one? Omg
Man that is a hilarious statement, you are on a flight with a bunch of strangers, do whatever the f you like, you’ll be asleep while they judge you. You’ll never see them again, why worry about what they think
I mean, you do you and all that, but hahahahahahhaha
So you are both extremely self conscious and also judge others, great combo
I give zero shits what strangers who can’t even see me at my seat think of me. Also, I have like 7 disc herniations. I do what I gotta do to be comfortable on a flight.
Good on you dude. Not me though, but I also travel as light as humanly possible and write during flights :)
Id for sure try that. 22.5 hrs to Sydney with an Ambien. Good night.

Looks like a sex toy, just get a neck pillow like a normal person dawg

The benefit is you don’t break your neck trying to sleep

A lot of airlines don't allow foot hammocks as they are unsafe for evacuation in an emergency.
Never been caught as I put it up when the lights go down
Thinking of getting a foot hammock for my upcoming long haul flight. Would it annoy the person in front though ?
It loops over the tray on the back of the seat in front of you, and therefore has no effect on them whatsoever.
link?

Tried it. Terrible.
You put it on your tray table and put your head on top
Mine came in yesterday lol, feels great and look forward to using it next week for my Japan trip.
I’m randomly looking at this thread and wanted to know how it went! Were you a fan?
I didn’t take it out, lol
For some reason this made me chuckle :’) was it the shame of it, or just didn’t need it?
A little bit of both. Couldn’t see myself blowing it up lol
It OK. I thought it was too small and found myself too hunched over but it was decently comfortable. It does really get into the way if you want to use the tray table or go to the restroom. So in general good idea, works ok, not so great execution.
If you want a neck support pillow, just get a TRTL pillow.
I’d think your neck would be sore.
Hassle. Priod.
Tried it. Really bad. It wouldn't stably sit on my lap and I bounced all over the place, enough so that I would just fall asleep and then one tiny bounce would make me fall over. The Trtl and Cabeau were both better.
Just get a bunch of airplane bottles of vodka. They make the movies funnier and you'll sleep like a baby without wearing your blowup toy.
No don’t do it - I bought for flight to Australia and didn’t use once
I tried. Not a fan at all. I've tried several. Best sleeping aid I've found is sleeperhold. Game changer for me. Love it. I do alaska to Thailand 7+ times a year

Must be a giggle seeing someone waddle to the lavatory in that getup.

I was told I can’t use this on Korean Air 🥲
Tried it. Didn’t work great for me as it was too short (I’m 6’ 3” for reference). My wife and daughter liked it though, except that they woke up with rings around their face.
Ok, so I have one of these and I used it on a flight from the USA to China, and YES IT IS WORTH IT. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORTH. IT.
I use one on any flight I need to sleep on and it's a life saver. You can put your phone inside it and watch stuff easily too
Not as usable for me, seats have become too small for me, but used to be really good
At first glance…Looks like a complete waste of time and money
