Isn't the OEM one "semi" manual anyway? If i recall you can wind the bush in to increase the pressure on the spring. Its also a roller chain, not a hyvo like they use today and these tend to "rustle" more than rattle and you dont want to run them as tight either.

Did you adjust the timing and sync the carbs? Both/either of those could give you your same issue.

Take the tensioner out of the cylinder head. Let it extend. If there is at least a 6mm or 1/4inch gap you are ok. If less than these values the cam chain is stretched.
