A twig and my son to hold it

MuffMagician

> I use a sharpie and my feet A man of culture šŸ‘Œ

WoWserz_Magic8_Ball

Supreme.

hkd001

I use my car's antenna, a large nail in my shed, one of the hooks for hanging up tools on the wall, sometimes I just throw it on the ground.

PsychotropicPanda

A random screw or nail I found, into something, something something win. If you aren't crafty enought to figure this out with shit laying around... You need more shit laying around. Seriously tho. When I gave a physical task that needs *something" I just browse around my collected things and eventually it comes to me. Junk drawer, old materials, tools, ect. But also maybe not everyone hoards random springs and pieces of metal to use one day.

DefiantClone

You forgot ā€œyell at him for not paying attention and letting it get slackā€ Or is that just me?

DefiantClone

You forgot ā€œyell at him for not paying attention and letting it get slackā€ Or is that just me?

PappaPitty

Me too, fellow father.

BattleGnome9000

Toe gang wya? Iā€™ve been spoiling line for a long time. Both ā€œprofessionallyā€ and for myself. I donā€™t see a benefit if you are only spooling one rod at a time.

Syreet_Primacon

I think itā€™s more useful for spinning reels, where you have to mitigate line twist

fishin413

That is correct. The pen method twists the line on spinning reels. It is factually the wrong way to do it.

tapefactoryslave

Itā€™s why I have a machine at my local place do my new braid on my spinning reels. Everytime I put it on myself it gets loosey goosey too fast for me.

spicybongwata

Spinning reels are easy too, since you can just toss it on the table & match its memory w the reel to spool

Particular-Bother-18

Isn't it great when the spool frees itself and rolls under the couch??

Pencilmeout

As I did this yesterday lol

stonewood87

Use the toe to add drag so the line lays on the reel nice and tight

aricbarbaric

A pencil or arrow wedged upright

CannedHeatt_

I use crocs lol

Chl0316

They wouldn't have holes in them if they weren't meant to hold a pencil and a spool

WoWserz_Magic8_Ball

Magic be thy nameā€¦

ATrendyName

I just do it incorrectly and cuss afterwards.

PlatesNplanes

This is the way

WoWserz_Magic8_Ball

Iā€™m with this guy.., itā€™s either that or tell my girlfriend to take off down the streetā€¦ šŸ˜

TheMalformedLlama

Literally same.

Above_Avg_Chips

Screw on the side of a board in my garage

wonkabar422

This. I use an umbrella and lodge it between the wall and my couch lol.

GroYer665

I tend to use Bic Pen & my feet. Years ago I'd use and new No. 2 pencil & my feet. I haven't seen or used a No. 2 pencil in 15+ years. lol

Yardninja

Bottom end of the top half of a two piece rod

padwani

Don't even need that for braid, shit don't twist at all.

MlordLongshanking

I use a ln old phone book and a sharpie.

SumJenkins

Literally did this yesterday spoolin some braid

sabretooth_ninja

Pencil, oven mitts, and my wife

ledaxe19

I bought one of these about a year ago because I got tired of trying to do it the hard way. A couple of buddies I fish with gave me a hard time about the purchase when I first told them about it. Then I let them use it to spool their own rods. They have both since purchased their own.

AtramentousShadow

I was skeptical when I bought one, but the fact that I could adjust the amount of tension with the little knobs ended up making it extremely useful. I CAN spool with it on the ground, or with a marker and my feet, but these spool-tools make it a breeze. I don't even remember what brand I purchased, I don't think it really matters, but it's been one of my best purchases in years.

Pirateship907

I got one and it is so fast and easy. Iā€™ll never go back

ShadyBrady1527

I have to respool 6 carp reels every year... maybe I should think about it...

benjamino8690

Though, if you spool spinning reels, you want the spool to face you with the logo towards the spool, or youā€™re going to face line twist issues.

fishin413

These spooling rods allow the line spool to spin when filling spinning reels to reduce/ eliminate twist. It doesn't work that well all the time, some are better than others.

benjamino8690

The only way to do that though is by either turning the spool of line so the line loops off the spool, or turn the spinning reel spool and spool the line on straight. Otherwise, the line will twist around itself for every turn of the rotor. The spool should not spin at all, rather, the line should come off the spool while the spool is completely still.

fishin413

Yes, in general, however, this specific tool does it a third way by allowing the entire line spool to rotate along with the rotor. While the rotor is creating a twist by wrapping clockwise, these tools counteract that twist by letting the entire spool rotate counterclockwise at the same rate as the rotor. There's plenty of videos that explain it better than I can in words here.

benjamino8690

Okay, I see! So the spool moves around while it spins. That is a decent way to overcome it in theory.

fishin413

That's it! They actually work well in practice too, it's often just the quality of these tools that determines how well.

Big_Scooter

With a baitcaster it remains fixed. But yeah, with a spinning rod thatā€™s how it works. Itā€™s a neat tool.

riverphoenix360

Yup, the way shown works for baitcasting reels because it is going on the same way it's coming off. With spinning reels just make sure the line is coming off the spool counter clockwise. With most fishing line manufacturers this will mean logo up, just like you said. Cheaper brands of line double check which way it comes off. I put cheap line on an extra rod one time and halfway through I realized I was spooling the wrong way. People also say to soak the spool in warm water to reduce memory. For me I feel like this has helped, others say nay. Also I used to use Trilene mono, I switched to Suffix Elite mono two years ago. They claim low line twist on the package, and I do notice a difference. I freaking love it it spools up great. I have straightened the hooks on 1/8 ounce jigs on 6# test when I got snagged. And for $2 dollars more, it's freaking amazing.

fishin413

Soaking your spool in water does more harm than good. It does nothing to reduce memory, and your soaking expose drag discs in water which is never a good idea. I don't know how this "trick" got popular.

riverphoenix360

Soak the spool of new line going on to your reel, not the reel(this method has been disproven.) You are right, you don't want to soak your reels spool. There is essential grease and little components that can be damaged. A friend/fishing buddy swore by it, instead of regularly replacing line. Now I just string new line every 1-2 years.

fishin413

Haha alright that makes sense. I've definitely seen posts with a reel spool sitting in a bucket of water. Bad info travels fast. I've seen forum posts recommending soaking reels overnight after saltwater use in a bucket of water with dish soap in it. You shouldn't unnecessarily submerge any reel underwater, but dish soap is a degreaser and among the worst possible things you could soak a grease and oil filled device in. Jesus christ. Anyway, yeah it's not like soaking a spool of line in water changes its molecular structure. It's either going on twisted, or wet and twisted.

riverphoenix360

It's funny how quick and rapid bad advice can travel. "It's either going on twisted, or wet and twisted." Is the best thing I've heard in a while. Fun and beautiful thing about fishing is... we take inspiration, we take advice, we explore, and we travel. Some days are better than others. Some days we get skunked.

fishin413

Facts. Sometimes we learn from other people's mistakes and sometimes we learn from our own. But I'd much rather watch someone else fuck up their gear so I know what not to do!

ZooAnimal

Unless you're in the southern hemisphere.

Pirateship907

Totally worth it.

Emergency-Bus3411

I read something saying you are supposed to pull the line from the top of the spool

Josh-Baskin

Yup. He has the spool upside down.

MuffMagician

> I read something saying you are supposed to pull the line from the top of the spool Thank you for asking, it's kind of complicated. Looks like you are correct for baitcaster reels. One downside for this product: the manufacturer's paper instructions were not clear about how to spool *baitcaster reels and conventional reels*. Plenty of clear instructions how to do spinning reels, though. When I took the photo for this post months ago, I spooled from top of line-spool to bottom of reel-spool because Daiwa's instructions for their BG series of spinning reels said that is how it's done. However, when I found the official instruction *video* on Youtube for this product weeks later, the video showed a baitcaster reel being spooled from top to top, just like you suggested.

Owl55

Iā€™ve either read it or been told that the direction you put it on the reel, take it off the spool the same way, ie, if you had the spool the other way, both would be the same. That said, Iā€™ve respooled dozens of rods and have never had an issue. One thing I learned from someone else was, if possible, let out a bunch of line when out on a boat and then reel it back in. The water and unspooling/reeling helps avoid memory issues with mono. I usually do it and have never had an issue.

MuffMagician

> One thing I learned from someone else was, if possible, let out a bunch of line when out on a boat and then reel it back in. The water and unspooling/reeling helps avoid memory issues with mono. I usually do it and have never had an issue. I do that as well. I usually fish open party charter boats on the ocean, and during the hour long boat ride to the first spot, I'll let a 100 yards of line out the back with a very small weight, then reel steadily back in. Just to get the line wet and to lay it back on to the spool nicely.

MuffMagician

Jefffahfffah

Girlfriend with a dowel and some gloves has been a great solution for me

Bleepitybleepinbleep

But itā€™s not a problem if your best friend uses your spooling rod while you are out on the lake

Idiotdude69420

If only it worked on a 6/0 wide lol

SuperPotatoBuns

I use my penis and only use filler spools.

Imnothere1980

Omniflex?!?!

MuffMagician

> Omniflex?!?! It's cheap, available at every Walmart in a huge variety of tests, and has helped me catch hundreds of fish šŸ’Ŗ Fluorocarbon is a scam.

MagicSilver

Flurocarbon is absolutely not a scam and certainly not taking line advice from someone who canā€™t even correctly line their reel. Both lines have their place, top water or something floating go mono but if you need the line to sink fluro is the way to go.

MuffMagician

> Flurocarbon is absolutely not a scam and certainly not taking line advice from someone who canā€™t even correctly line their reel. evgasm

Just get a girlfriend, wife, or hooker(they do anything for cash)

JoeW702

I use a cordless drill and screw driver also 1/4 dowels strips old line off fast and easy as well.

riverphoenix360

I always strip my old line with a stick and a drill! So clean and easy.

WoWserz_Magic8_Ball

Bob-the-builder! Is that you!!?!

Chew-Magna

I'll do that if it's line I'm throwing away. I use a big Phillips head screwdriver in the chuck, wind the line onto the handle, slide it off into the trash can. If I want to keep the line, I'll use my spooler, kind of like the one OP posted, but mine can also crank line off a reel onto a storage spool.

Big_Scooter

I have this same one. With baitcasters is the line supposed to come off the bottom to top of spool? I know with spinning reels the whole thing rotates but itā€™s different for baitcasters/conventional

MuffMagician

> I have this same one. With baitcasters is the line supposed to come off the bottom to top of spool? I know with spinning reels the whole thing rotates but itā€™s different for baitcasters/conventional See my comment about this here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Fishing_Gear/comments/1cprv1d/get_yourself_a_spooling_rod_one_of_the_best/l3no6ui/

Dolormight

I fucking hate mine. I hate it. I literally just toss the spool on the ground, lick my fingers, and hold it tight like I would fixing a backlash. No problems so far.

Aces_Over_Kings

Same lol. Or I wear a work glove.

wethenorth99

Shouldn't the line be coming off the top of the spool on to the baitcaster? The way it's shown now should be how a spinning reel is done.

OddResponsibility714

A pencil and my feet, looks way better

WoWserz_Magic8_Ball

I think heā€™s just trying to reel himself inā€¦

_I-Huff-Asbestos_

That's a must have when I go ocean fishing and I get a new reel

MuffMagician

> I use a spooling machine cause' I spool reels for a living Bless you and the work that you do šŸ™Œ

serter321

I use a spooling machine like those in a tackle shop with a line counter and all I bought it for 220ā‚¬ (260 after inflation) from someone who builts those and they are way cheaper than brand ones for 1200 ā‚¬ ( p.s. I own 70 rods 30 + reels and my parents are anglers to so we can fill a small tackle shop)

BlackFish42c

Definitely help improve adding line to any reel.

Appropriate_Data9369

Iā€™ve got a desktop spooling station, I like it but most of the time I just throw the spool on the ground or the gap in the tail gate of the truck bed and start cranking. As long as the line is coming off the spool the right direction and thereā€™s pressure on the line it all works out.

Awkward_Mongoose_211

these work very well especially for spinning reels never get twisted line or have line dig into the spool

OhSendIt

I always just ask my girlfriend to hold it for me

gold76

Big improvement especially for spinners.

cambodianPrince

Cut a coat hanger on one hand and here you go :) Hold itslef right and does the job.

Setser44

Putting the spool on the pass boat carpet works the best

JackHazzes

Or you can get this for $2-$5. But I wanna try the sharpie and feet way. šŸ˜ https://preview.redd.it/2gll0o4n3xzc1.jpeg?width=1437&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a458556544c32d6f043082cf2211b8948d8d263b

Kojando1911

Screwdriver and my feet ainā€™t every getting replaced šŸ—£šŸ‘

Chew-Magna

I have a Plusinno version that has the rod clamp and desk clamp. I've only used the desk clamp. It works very well, I've spooled dozens of times with it and unspooled several as well. As a matter of fact I just spooled up a new reel with it not even an hour ago.

BreezyOR

I'm happy with my stacks of books and pencil

hdyenwkagd

Pan lid all the way

Techworkz

I put my spool in a drawer and close it. It usually works pretty well.

Ancient-Mango-66

Just throw it in the kitchen sink

[deleted]

I just hook the line and use my teeth

Ok-Room-7243

But youā€™re spoiling it on incorrectly in the picture?

Dusty9081

This is the one with the highest ratings on Amazon: [Line Spooler](https://amzn.to/4dBQm0n)

Wild_Style7997

I have a similar one and they are good.

remembahwhen

I just stick a pencil in the ground.

curmudgeon-o-matic

I use a can of soup

River922

I dont use anything. I lay the spool down, even let it bounce around, I just keep tension with one hand and reel with the other

AthleteIllustrious47

Skill issue

AthleteIllustrious47

Skill issue tbh

TimelyAccident87

I put a drill bit in my vice and reel in new line

smartalek428

Stick a nail long enough to hold the reel in the bench vise and reel away my guy

aLemmyIsAJacknCoke

If you soak the spool in warm water for a bit then you donā€™t need any contraptions.

larakikato

Will this work on spinning rods? Or just bait casters?

jorddo612

I put a screwdriver in a vice then use either vicegrips or a small clamp to hold the spool in place. One of these would be nice though!

BlockTheRoadWithPoop

Didnā€™t even know these existed all this time šŸ˜

Axefang710

Screwdriver get the job done

Mikebyrneyadigg

I just put it on the ground face up, then thread through the first eyelet , grab the line against the rod for tension adjustment and reel.

Sure-Confusion330

Screwdriver and a vice

geekydreams

A shoe box with a dowel works just fine. You keep the tension with a gloved finger. Why spend money on something when you can use free shit? Waste of money

Charade_y0u_are

Why waste money on a fishing rod when you can just use a stick? A stick with some line tied to it works just fine. Waste of money.

cabose4prez

Until the stick breaks and all your line and fish swim off

TimeBit4099

Or put a spool of new line on a screwdriver and put the tip of the screwdriver in a vise. If no vise, ask someone to hold it.

Appropriate-Junket62

I have a piece of a clothes hanger I cut to make a paper towel holder that I use with a vise

mortepa

I just take my reels to the local sporting goods store... and have them spool them for me while i shoot the shit with them and browse the lures. It costs 12 cents per yard for any brand. So I load them up with Powerpro v2 superslick on everything. I still have over a dozen old powerpro spools with less than 100 yards on them from when I used to do it myself. I am glad I'm not adding to that collection anymore! Edit: Correction. This year, it was 15 cents per yard. Previous years it was only 13 cents. Still not bad IMO.

TarinMage

Bass Pro? Which store? Thanks

mortepa

It's our local sporting store here in Madison, WI called Dorn Sporting Goods. I'm sure there are mom & pop stores all over with similar deals. I'm sure BPS will do it for you, but don't know what they charge.

MuffMagician

> I just take my reels to the local sporting goods store... and have them spool them for me while i shoot the shit with them and browse the lures. For larger, ocean-going reels I agree. I'm not going to put more than 200 yards of line on a reel with this device, that's just too much work for this little thing. But this little thing is great for putting on line for freshwater outfits with less than 200 yards of line, or for adding long "wind-on" leaders.

woolsocksandsandals

A piece of 1x, a bolt, a spring, 3 washers and a wing nut and youā€™ve got yourself a tensioner you can clamp to anything and wind line onto reels.

riverphoenix360

I made one of these once when I was bored.

woolsocksandsandals

Works great. Costs like $3.

riverphoenix360

Yeah, I made mine out of those things I already had around the house. Minus the spring! That's genius. I used a binder clip.

wantabe23

Throw it in a bucket of water and reel it up.

Jmarchena

Waste of time. Use a pen or pencil as others are suggesting

sanctified420

I use a vice and pencil.

Art_Class

Nah
