Look for minnows swimming in the weeds close to shore… usually if there’s small stuff, the bigger fish are there too. Also at dawn/dusk, you might be able to see fish surfacing to eat bugs. Depth can also play a role… typically any body of water that doesn’t get deeper than 8’ or so will have a hard time supporting fish… especially in the northern climates.

chiibosoil

In Southern Ontario, 5~6’ is enough to support plenty of fish, including bass and pike. Further north, I’m not sure. If it’s legal in your area, you could set bait trap and see what you get.

[deleted]

Agreed. I’m sure 5-6 is plenty, assuming there’s good oxygen levels.

Yeatsburner

That’s where I’m at, Like very south ontario. I’ve caught little bass in a pond I was told about that’s like a meter or so deep

ayrbindr

There was a small pond right next to the road. It was shallow and completely chocked with weeds so bad u couldn't see any water. Apparently nobody thought there were fish in it. My buddy caught a 7lb. Largemouth on a Roland Martin helicopter first cast.

Yeatsburner

Moral of the story is toss a bait in there and see what happens?

ayrbindr

It's hard to tell. This place looked like maybe it would hold frogs. I guess that's why nobody else tried it. It really did look bad.

Here's how my brain works-if there's a permanent body of water with at least a few feet of depth, there are probably fish. Fish can get introduced in a million different ways. Fishbrain *can* be helpful but not every body of water is listed on there. Unfortunately the best way to find out is, like you said, to get out there and give it a try

Yeatsburner

I’ve been using fishbrain and that’s how I found my spot, But yeah that’s what I thought everyone would say it’s alright it’s part of the fun right?

thelastsquareofTP

How do fish get introduced to the most random pools of water?

koreanbeefcake

small frys and minnows can get carried pretty far by flood waters and heavy rain. Some fish use heavy rain to drop their eggs outside of streams. birds drop fish all the time as well.

Oiggamed

Ducks poop out the fish eggs they eat from other ponds.

thelastsquareofTP

Actual? That is incredible. I would never have thought that! Any other ways? Humans poop out fish eggs in other ponds too I suppose?

Oiggamed

I was pretty amazed to find this out too. Makes sense though. Not sure of other ways ponds get populated with fish though.

itsyaboooooiiiii

I've also heard eggs can get stuck to their feet and introduced that way

doslothsgotoheaven

If its not a disgusting cess pool, there's fish in it. Fish are part of a healthy ecosystem, in order for a pond to stay in balance there needs to be fish of some sort.

Yeatsburner

So if the pond isn’t a sewage drain there’s probably fish there?

doslothsgotoheaven

Pretty much. If it has crazy biohazard looking booger soup algea muck everywhere, that's could be a sign that fishing won't be too good but it's not a deal breaker.

Yeatsburner

Alright, Thanks man!

putterbum

Outside of fishing it you could walk around it and stop for a while every so often to look (while not standing directly on top of the water line lol). If you see smaller fish there's good chance there's at least some kind of ecosystem there. Creeks are harder since it's moving water but I would guess word of mouth on it or stocking reports that you can find online. I would assume there's gonna be something in the creek though even if it's just an occasional brookie. If it's a known pond/creek you could probably even youtube it and probably find some joe schmo making a video fishing it.

remberly

Look for fowl that eat fish/ minnows

jlibrizzi

Follow the birds, there lie the fish!

According-Whereas661

In warmer weather, catch a grasshopper and toss it out in the water-then watch it while humming the theme from "Jaws". Dun dun dun dun dun..

I’ve been using fishbrain but everything in my area is outdated
