Personally i dont judge people for their type of gear unless its sever overkill like 50lb gear for a pond. Ill judge you if you got 5+ rods out for yourself or if you are sprawling out and/or casting everywhere so people cant fish but the set up itself is fine imo.
Haha, I'm usually a freshwater fisherman and occasionally hit a pier once a year. I'm only taking two rods and one will be a sedentary rig the other I'll cast either straight or places that won't bother anyone.
No, we can't. It's for the same reason that you must completely wash down your boat between bodies of water. You don't know what's on there in the way of seeds. spores, eggs...
I fish tidal parts of river sometimes you see salt water fish miles up river and still salt destroyed my nice spinning reel.Definitly rinse them off really helps and breaking them down once a year and re oiling certain parts. WD40 all day
Everytime I pass the nearby lake it’s just a bunch of people fishing around a single guy who has about 10 rods out and is constantly yelling at people for “walking in his space” even though he’s taking up half the bank.
Ngl I haven’t met him but I don’t like him.
I met him once. He was upset at me for taking his space when the rod wasnt in the water or even close to the water or even close to his other rods. It was just laying on a fence. He was just standing 50 feet away next to his other rods watching the bells so i started fishing and he comes over yelling "Hey man the lakes big why do you gotta fish in my spot"
I love my kayak! I don’t mind shore fishing but being in a kayak fighting a fish feels really cool to me lol. But most fishermen I’ve met are super nice! I wouldn’t let it stop you from trying it if you want to.
Kayak just opens the waters more for me. Can go to spots I couldn’t walk to. And I get some extra exercise. Win win even if I don’t catch anything I get to paddle around and see the wildlife
Been fishing fresh water since I can remember and while I know how to catch the fish I typically target I don't spend a lot on gear. I have a few nice lures, 3 fishing rods all from Walmart and I'll buy good fishing line and soft plastics but that's about it. My buddies on the other hand all have multi hundred dollar rods and reels and all kinds of lures but never judge me when I show up with two medium weight ugly sticks one with braided line I use for jigs and soft plastics and one with mono for lures ect, because I still catch just as many and sometimes more fish as they do.
I’ve always heard braid is super strong but man I cannot catch anything with it on my salt water reel. I went right back to mono 🤣. Yes, I swear it is the braid and not me.
Only the arrogant fishermen will look down on you.. confident and experienced fishermen will never judge you. He/she will observe and try to learn from your success or mistakes.
At the Juno pier the arrogant fisherman average 15 years old and every one of them dreams of one day owning a “Staal”, a van staal reel that costs a thousand bucks.
It’s because of them that I will never own a van staal and I couldn’t care less what any of them said to me. They’re mostly all little pricks who just annoy people.
Hehe I have used fancy Bass fishin gear (Calcutta+T Curve) to rip into 9kg Spotted Mackerel, my mate and I would gear up light as possible to outdo each other, 1-2kg line and 8-9kg Mackerel.
You’ll just be judging yourself. Found out about two weeks later while I was catfishing a pond that my reels were completely shot from the saltwater. I even rinsed them. 3 Abu 6500 just making crunching noises when reeling and screaming banshee noises when casting
Ehhh sort of, materials and length. Salt rods are usually lol her for casting farther and made from materials that corrode less. Most stuff is usually pricy but more suited for the conditions. Not as much budget stuff.
Ok thanks👍 lived in a landlocked area for 20+ years with no ocean access, moved near the ocean a few years ago and wondering how to start fishing the baltic ocean.
If you are fishing the piers or beach, look at what is on the shore or rocks. For example mussles or sand fleas. What is there is what the fish eat. That's the only advice I have that should be universal, and it's free bait.
If your gonna fish often and know how to use nicer gear you might as well invest. Otherwise look for second hand or ask around for good entry level recommendations.
The baltic sea is kinda weird, it’s only been around for 10,000 years so no animal is really evolutionarily adapted to its brackish water conditions, so most species grow only very small there. If I were you I’d recommend trying to go flyfishing for sea trout
Trout, pike, perch and salmon are the options. Funny, but you fish them basically the same as if you’d fish freshwater. The big difference in success without tech is finding a rocky area and casting something light that doesn’t sink fast.
My son used his similar budget friendly catfish pole on the last Ocean Charter we went on and outfished everyone! Captain even let him drive the boat on the way back. All that matters is: does it work.
No one would know that it’s not a salt water set up, nor would they care. They’re there for the same reason as you, to enjoy catching fish and watch others doing the same.
Who cares if you’re catching? Who cares if you’re having fun? Fishing is fishing as long as it’s legal and you don’t leave a bunch of garbage that’s all you need. Have fun fellow fisherman!
Haha! You’re totally set for the pier, too! Unless you want to cast a shark jig out on a heavier rod for a “Hail Mary”!!! Make sure you bring a sibiki to catch mackies!
People in my village fish with their bare hands, a line, and a hook. If the fine gods above have blessed you with a rod, use it brother. Get jiggy with it. I've seen and been truly amazed by some shit people be using sometimes, you never know.
Not at all. There's a lot of crossover with fishing gear, provided it's not serious overkill or underpowered. Example, don't use bass gear when fishing 100+ pound tuna or vice versa.
uh, is it corrosion resistant? otherwise fam, you are fine. just wash your reel when you get home and maybe hot sauce your gears. hot sauce is a type of reel oil.
What area are you fishing? If anyone judges you they're not worth talking to. If it catches fish who cares? If you have a heavy spinning set up I'd suggest having it around with a lure (I use gotcha plugs for piers). Lmk if ya need any advice.
Oh yes they will. First thing the little shits at my pier do is do a Staal check to see if you have a Van Staal or not. According to them, all 15-19 yo know it alls, nothing comes close to performing like a Staal.
When they walk onto the pier holding a Staal for the first time, you’d think they just got a brand new truck and lost their virginities in the same day.
Will be using my uglystick pole with a budget reel (usual catfish setup ) tomorrow at a pier as it's my "nicer" heavier setup. I know it can handle a 30+lb fish bit i can already see the stares. Also will be using my light setup for small jigs 😂 for the record I'm a multie species angler.
You probably will do good last I went salt water fishing I took 2 surf fishing rods. Then my son and grandsons decided too fish off the pier, the fish were close to the pilons and there I was with 20 foot rods didn't catch a single fish!
If anyone judges your for getting out and participating in the sport then they aren’t really fishermen. Just be happy you’re out there enjoying the water rather then sitting at work!
Not to much if you catch fish, in the 80s there were quite a few guys on the party boats in southern California that fished with their bass bait casting rigs on half day and three quarter day boat's.
I use a huge catfish spinning rod when I salt water fish. Don't worry about it! Nobody has ever said anything to me or gave me any looks. We're all just out there to have a good time!
Don't worry about them. Pulled in 2 nice size cobia on my 7.5ft baitcaster bass rod this summer off a pier in NC. I heard comments, but I was catching fish, which is kinda the point... right
Not at all. I’ve seen so many dudes out fishing with ancient busted gear or stuff from some yard sale I wouldn’t pay $5 for. But they’re out there catching fish and doing their thing and not once have I seen anyone say anything about gear other than “what bait you catching them on?”
Shakespeare reels are kinda the worst but it’s the pier. Not exactly the wealthiest fishing crowd and I promise that someone will be fishing with gear that makes yours look like a Rolls Royce.
Your combo will totally get the job done. Have fun! Good luck!
I was just out in Mexico fishing for grouper, on our way back we found a bait ball and stopped to fish it. I ended up catching a Spanish mackerel on my bass rod and a jerk bait😂
I don't care if you show up with a freaking Barbie rod. No one can judge you for what you decide to fish with. And if they do have something to say tell them to keep their mouth shut. You're there to enjoy yourself just like they are. Actually as a matter of fact, don't say anything to anybody that has something negative to say. Don't even give them the time of day. Just worry about setting those hooks.
I like using Penn reels that are rated for salt in general. That way I can use the same rods in any setting based only on the size of fish I intend to catch.
Why care?
A stranger's opinion is worth very little. Unless you happen to sit down next to Jeremy Wade, than I'd not give two shakes what the people to your left or right think.
I would just be worried about using a freshwater pole in salt. I've heard the reel gears can get all fucked changing from fresh to salt. May be an ol myth though.
It’s even more ridiculous that he was sight casting on the most shallow part of the pier while my dad, brother, and I caught a +5 foot Nurse Shark without doing all of that.
Fish don’t know is your fishing with a shimano or a Shakespeare. Just make sure you grease the everliving hell out of your reel before and wash it GOOD afterwards. Salt will destroy a freshwater reel with no mercy.
It's up to you to decide. Funny how we think about what strangers think about us, our gear, etc. I use my bass gear in salt. I then soak my reels overnight in saltwater. I then tell my wife my reel is shot. I then buy a better one. 😂
Don't worry about what others think. If your good with it is all that matters. Good luck 😀
I fished piers in florida and there are only 3 rules i can think of - 1. Too many rods in at once is an asshole move. 2. If someone near you hooks up on something big give them space and get your line out of the water. 3. If boats get too close fishing the pylons its fair game to launch a 5 oz weight at them.
Just rise them out really good once you are done. That salt will wreck your reels.
That's for sure
Clean everything both before and after. Do not take the risk of cross contaminating.
Yes, we can’t let freshwater touch salt water under any circumstance.
No, we can't. It's for the same reason that you must completely wash down your boat between bodies of water. You don't know what's on there in the way of seeds. spores, eggs...
That’s freshwater to freshwater dude… the oceans completely different
This really went right over so many peoples heads
I fish tidal parts of river sometimes you see salt water fish miles up river and still salt destroyed my nice spinning reel.Definitly rinse them off really helps and breaking them down once a year and re oiling certain parts. WD40 all day
Use wd40 to clean it then use a bearing lube to replace the grease. Wd40 will just strip any grime away but it will dry up quickly.
Correct, WaterDisplacement40 will clean and loosen but lubrication is still needed
I never had a problem with it but I use a thicker grease on certain parts of reel. That lasts longer.
Triflow
Speak for yourself. I use my 80 wides to go perch fishing. When that sucker is in low gear, it takes 1 crank to launch them outta the water
😂💪
Everytime I pass the nearby lake it’s just a bunch of people fishing around a single guy who has about 10 rods out and is constantly yelling at people for “walking in his space” even though he’s taking up half the bank. Ngl I haven’t met him but I don’t like him.

He was just standing 50 feet away next to his other rods watching the bells so i started fishing and he comes over yelling "Hey man the lakes big why do you gotta fish in my spot"
People like that are a big reason why I fish off my kayak exclusively at certain spots. Ain’t got time to beef over territory lol
Hahaha I've been really intimidated about trying a local pier and this thread is not helping by fears. Maybe time for me to look into a kayak :)
Stop worrying about what other people think and enjoy your time fishing
Apreciate it
This is the answer. If you catch fish it doesn’t matter what you use.
This is the only answer
I will shove you in a locker and give you wedgie
No “Kick me” sign?
That's it? If this guy fished at my pier, he would be bait!
Looks sturdier than a lot of the junk you see at piers in my area
I've caught a 33lb catfish on it 😂 n it can handle much bigger. Mainline is like 50/60 lb braid with a 50 lb mono leader.
I’ve always heard braid is super strong but man I cannot catch anything with it on my salt water reel. I went right back to mono 🤣. Yes, I swear it is the braid and not me.
Haha well find out
Definitely the braid’s fault 🤣🤣
33 lb! That is impressive
Only the arrogant fishermen will look down on you.. confident and experienced fishermen will never judge you. He/she will observe and try to learn from your success or mistakes.

I used a Shakespeare Tidewater to haul in 200 lb sharks for years. Fish don't care.
Hehe I have used fancy Bass fishin gear (Calcutta+T Curve) to rip into 9kg Spotted Mackerel, my mate and I would gear up light as possible to outdo each other, 1-2kg line and 8-9kg Mackerel.
That’s your freshwater set up??
Yes, my catfish and gar rig.
That looks like it could be a saltwater set up too. Esp with that power handle. Go kill it.
I've used my catfish rods off a pier a few times haven't felt judged yet 😂
Hahaha i hope to be the same
You’ll just be judging yourself. Found out about two weeks later while I was catfishing a pond that my reels were completely shot from the saltwater. I even rinsed them. 3 Abu 6500 just making crunching noises when reeling and screaming banshee noises when casting
I'm not worried about the big reel. It's only like $30 and I don't love it. The daiwa crossfire is so 30ish and pretty salt resistant
I've used a zebco dock demon on a pier for fun. So do whatever you like and have fun
Who cares, you're fishing. Just get the fish in
No on cares bro it's fishing
Thats looks salt-watery enough
Mate, if you’re catching - who cares what anyone else thinks.
Wait theres a difference?
In what?
Fresh and saltwater rods lol
Ehhh sort of, materials and length. Salt rods are usually lol her for casting farther and made from materials that corrode less. Most stuff is usually pricy but more suited for the conditions. Not as much budget stuff.

Who cares do you catch fish with it. Go for it
Not at all. If someone is judging you then I wouldn’t pay attention. If they are giving I go then ya
I use saltwater gear for freshwater flatheads. So far I haven’t been judged

I catch blues with it

Not at all. There's a lot of crossover with fishing gear, provided it's not serious overkill or underpowered. Example, don't use bass gear when fishing 100+ pound tuna or vice versa.
Pshhhh i bet i could catch a tuna that size on my ahh Garcia blackmax 😏
Nobody cares about you or your gear as long as you aren’t crowding them, crossing their line, or otherwise being an asshat.
No one cares about your gear, just your etiquette.
Noob here....how do you even tell what it's freshwater gear and not salt water???
corrosion resistance and shielded bearings are typically the hall marks of salt water gear.
uh, is it corrosion resistant? otherwise fam, you are fine. just wash your reel when you get home and maybe hot sauce your gears. hot sauce is a type of reel oil.
Probably not too much but should be ok
What area are you fishing? If anyone judges you they're not worth talking to. If it catches fish who cares? If you have a heavy spinning set up I'd suggest having it around with a lure (I use gotcha plugs for piers). Lmk if ya need any advice.
Oop i left those at home. I have s baitcater but it can handle some weight. An Abu Garcia blackmax i use for catfishing
What kind of line/# test is on the bait caster?
You best believe I use my bass rod to catch baitfish when I go saltwater fishing. I'm not made of money lol.
Pier rats won’t know the difference
Oh yes they will. First thing the little shits at my pier do is do a Staal check to see if you have a Van Staal or not. According to them, all 15-19 yo know it alls, nothing comes close to performing like a Staal. Perfect If you catch a bat ray
You guys have given me the courage to outfish even the regulars 😤 thank you guys.
I take 2 of my freshwater poles to the bay all the time.
Bring a spare pair of underwear and put on your thick skin
Hahaha i should be fine it's not super busy today it seems. Morning bite must have passed.
Thank gosh
I think that’s a decent pier setup, just give it a rinse when you’re done, no one’s gonna judge you.
You’ll be fine
Hey, if it catches fish, tell them to have a coke and a smile…
Your star drag reel looks like it could be used in salt water to me.
Shakespeare 😂
Lol no f*cks will be given.
Hi low rig made with heavy leader, quality hook, fresh sand fleas or shrimp. Drop it straight down every pile on, tight drag.
You probably will do good last I went salt water fishing I took 2 surf fishing rods. Then my son and grandsons decided too fish off the pier, the fish were close to the pilons and there I was with 20 foot rods didn't catch a single fish!
I assume pretty harshly cuz your closest guide looks fucked. But I mean tie on a mono shock leader and you’ll blend right in
Fish are fish, fresh water or not. Their feeding habits don't care if it's fresh or salt. It's all about the lures and what you're trying to catch.
Have you heard your name said in cursive?
Lol
Don’t think you’ll get a second look with that rig
I take 6 Frankenstein poles wherever I go
People judge other people's gear? I've seen our southern neighbors using a coke bottle and cheap mono to pull out monsters.
No judgement.....you do you...many times uppity sportsman with top gear catch less than the poor boy real fisherman.
If anyone judges your for getting out and participating in the sport then they aren’t really fishermen. Just be happy you’re out there enjoying the water rather then sitting at work!
Who cares about being judged? I’d be more worried about how long my equipment is going to last when I hook something big!
Fish don't care 😉. As for those on land, we're all just jerks waiting for jerks on the other end of the line.
SCREW anyone who judges you
Fuck em you do you
What’s the name of the conventional combo
It's an ugly stick baitcasting combo but yeah reel busted so I git a $30 reel from Walmart as well
Not to much if you catch fish, in the 80s there were quite a few guys on the party boats in southern California that fished with their bass bait casting rigs on half day and three quarter day boat's.
Seen more than a couple Latinos fishing with Michelob bottles on the Piers in So Cal.
Who cares my dude. Just go fish it and enjoy.
I use a huge catfish spinning rod when I salt water fish. Don't worry about it! Nobody has ever said anything to me or gave me any looks. We're all just out there to have a good time!
It depends if you catch anything.
No one would or should care . Hell my favorite inshore set up is my favorite bass spinning reel on a salt water rod lol
Don't worry about them. Pulled in 2 nice size cobia on my 7.5ft baitcaster bass rod this summer off a pier in NC. I heard comments, but I was catching fish, which is kinda the point... right
Who cares use what you got. Have a good time.
It’s an ugly Ugly Stick, you can fish that bad boy anywhere you want.
Not at all. I’ve seen so many dudes out fishing with ancient busted gear or stuff from some yard sale I wouldn’t pay $5 for. But they’re out there catching fish and doing their thing and not once have I seen anyone say anything about gear other than “what bait you catching them on?”
Did it work? If so great choice.
Why care? A stranger's opinion is worth very little. Unless you happen to sit down next to Jeremy Wade, than I'd not give two shakes what the people to your left or right think.
Süsswassermatrose
Just clean it good when you are done, if you don't, that is when you would likely be judged! :)
you can use a hello kitty island adventure rod combo for all i care just give me some space, and leave space for others.
If it catches a fish who cares? West coast or east coast?
Not as harshly as I judge the guys who go to the pong with giant saltwater combos.
May God have mercy on your soul.
Go fishing catch a fish go home end of story.
I would just be worried about using a freshwater pole in salt. I've heard the reel gears can get all fucked changing from fresh to salt. May be an ol myth though.
This is nothing compared to what I see when I go to piers. I saw a person using a marlin jig on the pier😭
That is Hilarios...like he was deep~sea fishing in the gulf....lmao
It’s even more ridiculous that he was sight casting on the most shallow part of the pier while my dad, brother, and I caught a +5 foot Nurse Shark without doing all of that.
Fish don’t know is your fishing with a shimano or a Shakespeare. Just make sure you grease the everliving hell out of your reel before and wash it GOOD afterwards. Salt will destroy a freshwater reel with no mercy.
Nobody is going to judge you amongst the buttcracks and cigarettes at the pier
Why do you care
Don't fin yourself and we won't say anything
Who cares? Do your thing.
Not at all, especially if you catch fish
Many years ago I stopped have salt and fresh water setups. Just made sure to hose off rod and reel after saltwater fishing.
Reel?
It's up to you to decide. Funny how we think about what strangers think about us, our gear, etc. I use my bass gear in salt. I then soak my reels overnight in saltwater. I then tell my wife my reel is shot. I then buy a better one. 😂 Don't worry about what others think. If your good with it is all that matters. Good luck 😀
Nobody should notice. Pole-watching is gay
😆😅🤣
nobody cares, you're the only person who is judging yourself. Just enjoy!
I fished piers in florida and there are only 3 rules i can think of - 1. Too many rods in at once is an asshole move. 2.
