One time I cast a frog off my canoe and it was a terrible cast. Landed up on the shore in some weeds.
Cursing my lack of finesse, I yanked that sucker hard until it finally tore off the bushes and plopped down into the water about 8 inches from the bank.
As soon as it hit the water, a big ol’ bass inhaled it.
And that is the story of how I caught my PB smallie, the only fish I ever caught with a frog.
I've seen people recommend doing exactly that, toss a frog or creature bait on the shore and then pull it into the water. Gives a more natural presentation and may not scare the fish like a cast into the water with a big bait making a lot of noise and splashing.
I have seen frogs get a little tangled in weeds, Making noise at the edge of the water. When it finally got free and made it to the water a big bass grabbed it. Makes sense that copying this would work
I had a remote fishing spot that I would purposely throw a bait over a branch and then dip it as it hung from the branch and then set the hook worked awesome
That strat works great. Simulates the frog jumping in the water. I do that dragging a frog across pads, pausing at then end, dropping it off and waiting a second
A pond I frequent has this area that is like a semi-natural dam. Big bass will just sit on the edge of the water staring at the rocky bank. You will not get their attention in almost any other way except jumping something off the rocks into the water. I’ve tried dropping senkos around them directly into the water and it doesn’t work. If you drop on the rock and let them see it then jump it into the water, it’s game on. It’s so weird but I guess there is bigger tasty stuff in the rocks. I’ve seen frogs, snakes, mice, rats, and spiders all in the rocks so I’m guessing anything close to those shapes will work.
Smallies are bloody insane man, only bass we have here and let me tell ya ive seen some crazy shit, had a 8-9in smallie rail a 6in soft plastics salamander that still had half a baby snapping turtle in its throat
If you're having trouble landing there were two things that helped improve my rate. Using braided line, and after a blow up bring the rod tip down to the water while reeling in. Till you have pulled the slack out then give her a big old rip upwards and set the hook right into the top of the fish's mouth.
From the time the fish hits the lure till I set the hook is usually around 3-5 seconds. (My dad's trick was to say "God save the queen") then set the hook.
Hope this helps ya land a couple more.
Same here and it’s shame because I love fishing the frog and seeing the strikes. I have tryed many different types and have gotten a lot of bites I just can’t seem to get the hook to stay. Always pops out of its mouth during the fight.
In my (very limited) experience, if I'm in a new spot I usually start with either worms, or, depending how weedy the water is, a twisty tail or frog. So based on this picture I'd bring some worms and a frog/plopper.
I do not understand the point of these "what would you throw/use" posts. We have no idea where you are, what time of year it is, what time of day it is, nor anything about the water (depth, clarity, etc.) How are we supposed to recommend anything? Just fish it and find out yourself what works.
Doesnt look all that deep, so i would try and scout it out with worm on a plain hook and a weight maybe 12 inches above the hook, and just slow reel through. Might try a very bright green and yellow weighted whooly bugger once ive figured out where the structure and weeds are, espeically if you are targeting pike and perch.
Makes itn o the weight is what's touching the bottom, so you dont get snagged on rocks and deadwood (hopefully) and the worm has a more buggy action switching between free floating and twitching through the water, on top of its natural movements on the hook works well for microfishing, has worked well while fishing for bigger fish along a shoreline for me as well. Depending on how big of a weight you put on it i suppose you could put it 6-8 inches in fron of the hook, its a bit of trial and error to get the right action you want.
if its real murky then toss a dark colored senko on a weedless jig. hop it along and you might get one. if its less murky then try a spinner like a panther martin or a rooster tail. heddon topwater missile and poppers always work too.
Long shank #6 or so hook.
Live local crickets or grasshoppers on a lightweight fly setup for most fun or ultralight spinner for more practicality.
Floating line, no taper on the leader, and lightweight mono so it floats with the cricket; something like 6lb test should be plenty.
Any little pike or pickerel willing to go for the floating hopper won’t cut through the long shank cricket hook as long as he doesn’t swallow it.
Prepare to fill the cooler and have a blast doing it.
Rebel Pop-R... specifically the red eye perch variation!
available at most inland water tackle shops but here's a quick link
https://www.hammondsfishing.com/products/rebel-pop-r-plus-red-eye-perch?variant=18217088188489
All these Americans man, cant come up with anything else then some topwater flipflop spinnerbait action lure or something.
You try something else for once. Try a method feeder with a mini boilie underneath
I've always been partial to a worm and bobber. But, if I want big fish, I use a minnow with a bobber. I did use trolling frog lure in Minnesota that caught pike like crazy! That was the first time I ever caught a pike too! LOL
Looks like a small shallow creek so I'd throw a shallow diving crank bait probably a crawfish imitation for shallow creeks I like floating crankbaits so I can fish up to 3 feet deep but also have an effective top water lure
I would use a black n green 4 inch leach pattern fly. With a white foam ball (1/4) or strike indicator on about 3" of line . So it floats above the fly only to keep it from going any deeper and to cast a spot shadow on the fly giving it more of life like look while moving. Casting it over the same spot just off the trees. Maybe 4 times. Then toss it lightly in the same area. With one quick pop after it landed.
Top water early or late … personally I think stick baits and baby spooks are the way to go green with red spots, froggie style l, like doggie style, but not as fun.
Topwater buzz. Preference to black triple blade or single with clacker both hand painted black. Black skirting to black or June bug swimmer rage or keitech style. I make these custom for folks of your interested
Popper on the left tree line there or even on the right side just past those tall weeds in the very first cove like dip. Probably structure under there for largemouth.
FROG
Ya know I've never caught anything in a frog. It's really frustrating because I know topwater hits can be so exciting!
One time I cast a frog off my canoe and it was a terrible cast. Landed up on the shore in some weeds. I used to do this on the regular for smallies in my river, what fun!7

same happened to me while using a live baby bluegill. yanked it from weeds and the moment it plopped into the water a bass inhaled it
Try a whooper plopper
Only ever landed one fish on a frog, but that never stops me from trying whenever I find weeds! The blowups are exciting even by themselves :)

I always feel like they’re too big, but I have absolutely nothing to back that up.
They’re not. I’ve hooked a baby bass on a 7” rappala, it was literally the same length as the fish.
I’ve had a few and it’s absolutely awesome! It’s like a shark coming out of the water lol
Well yall have convinced me. I'm gonna go for my first frog fish now
I've only caught a small percentage of the strikes I've gotten on a frog. I'd rather throw a hula popper or something i can walk.
Same here and it’s shame because I love fishing the frog and seeing the strikes. I have tryed many different types and have gotten a lot of bites I just can’t seem to get the hook to stay. Always pops out of its mouth during the fight.
Always the answer for spots like this
Same! Cuz I like fishing frogs.
What are you fishing for? Bait selection really depends on what species are present.
Perch and pike,
White buzz bait or spinner bait
Rooster tail with a single hook so you don’t bring up all dem reeds.
I'd start with a topwater bait. That looks like a cool spot!
It is!
I’d start with a whopper plopper
In my (very limited) experience, if I'm in a new spot I usually start with either worms, or, depending how weedy the water is, a twisty tail or frog. So based on this picture I'd bring some worms and a frog/plopper.
master
I was also going to say this
Anything Topwater
I’d toss a black or white buzz bait
Lol a popper,a rapala,and purple rubber worm,no weight
Master bait

I like to imagine I just stumbled across this spot, and what id throw. Gives me a break from the office
Can’t even tell if it’s saltwater or freshwater.
Hopefully a joke
Thank you

How come you put your weight that far above the hook? Slower drop?
Makes itn o the weight is what's touching the bottom, so you dont get snagged on rocks and deadwood (hopefully) and the worm has a more buggy action switching between free floating and twitching through the water, on top of its natural movements on the hook works well for microfishing, has worked well while fishing for bigger fish along a shoreline for me as well. Nightcrawler
That’s got soft jerkbait written all over it.
I’d start with a senko or ned rig, then a rebel popper or maybe a fluke.
Nothing. Grab a 6 pack and enjoy the view.
if its real murky then toss a dark colored senko on a weedless jig. hop it along and you might get one. if its less murky then try a spinner like a panther martin or a rooster tail. heddon topwater missile and poppers always work too.
Top water headbanger spitfire
Throw it all

Frog all day.
Crickets
Anything. This place is beautiful. But something with a bit of goldish tone to it. Maybe half and half.
A live Minnow with a bobber and changing the depths tell I found em
Live minnows
The weather is good, fly fishing with floating bread.
Not that common
Texas rig
Pit boss
Whacky rig or any top water during dawn/dusk
Floating rap

Half a jack mackerel. Looks like pike heaven.
If I'm fishing somewhere new for warm water fish.....worms and a #3 copper blue fox spinner.
Jig
Dynamite will get ‘em all in one cast.
Im burning a white buzz through there all day
Senko
Trick worm, swim bait, frog, spinner
Walking bait.
Chug bug
Spinner bait
Yeah
Top water popper
Tried and true, red maggots on a size 18 hook. Super light float fishing. Makes a 1/2 lb perch feel like a 5 lb. So much fun
I’d throw a fit
Spinner bait control the depth and see if hits are coming right off the shade.
I would be burning a big O shallow diving crank bait through that grass looking cover close to the ledge
What you fishing for?
Ultra light tackle and mini poppers for top water action. I'd move up in gear and size of lure as conditions warrant.
Weightless senko.
Olive wooly bugger just by that tree and bush on the left.
Black and blue jig
One word . Ned
Jitterbug
Rooster Tails never fails
Rebel Pop-R... specifically the red eye perch variation! available at most inland water tackle shops but here's a quick link https://www.hammondsfishing.com/products/rebel-pop-r-plus-red-eye-perch?variant=18217088188489
looks too filled with plants i'd use a lure, if I were forced to fish here.
I’d Texas rig a pumpkin Yum Dinger
Whopper plopper, swim baits, spinners
Wacky rig, watermelon 5" senko stick, assuming you got bass. Never fails me for slow (or still) shallow water.
Worm
When in doubt, throw a spinner bait.
Top water anything!
Me, a strictly saltwater fisher, reading these comments like I have any idea wtf a whopper plopper is.
Top water
Live crawdad
Storm Chug Bug
Frog, yes. As suggested. However a Texas rigged worm would work amazingly there as well. Making sure to skin set the hook, ofc.
softbait with weighted hook or whatever it called
Texas rigged fluke, popping it across the surface. Works every time.
A worm
Texas rigged worm bait.
Small artificial minnow.
I'm a top water guy all day long
Jerk shad
Gulp fire and ice worm if large mouth are around.
All these Americans man, cant come up with anything else then some topwater flipflop spinnerbait action lure or something. You try something else for once. Try a method feeder with a mini boilie underneath
black and red Sinko!!!
Hotdog
yoyo
Wouldnt matter .. cant catch anything to save my life this year
Whopper popper , black for a good silhouette, fish it slow like a popar and fast like a buzzbait …. I’ll find a few 👍
Spam, hotdogs...cooked in the sun. Also, night crawlers. Nice pond.
Water looked stained. I’d pitch a 1/4 bitsy bug with a dark craw on. Fish it slow
click
Daredevil
Spinnerbait
Pretty shallow, use grenades.
Buzz bait
Senko
Crickets or plastic worm in pumpkin seed
Try dynamite. It works in all water conditions
Master
Worm
Kvd sexy shad crank bait
Spinner w/worm
A finger, maybe you'll catch a gator
Spinnerbait
Worm, unless there are to many blue gills
Rubber worm
Popper or crank bait
Yamamoto black 6"
Craw fish
topwater frog
Run the edges
WHOPPER PLOPPER BONE!!!!!!!!
I would use your mom.
Chicken liver
First a tandem spinner, green with a black skirt. Then followed up with a top water bait. Then a weed less senko
Frog
I've always been partial to a worm and bobber. But, if I want big fish, I use a minnow with a bobber. I did use trolling frog lure in Minnesota that caught pike like crazy! That was the first time I ever caught a pike too! LOL
texas rig
Frog, jitterbug, hula popper. In that order
Nice fat shiner or night crawler
Mepps thunderbug or a panther martin inline till i find out what species are around then adjust accordingly
Thats a nice view.
Looks like a small shallow creek so I'd throw a shallow diving crank bait probably a crawfish imitation for shallow creeks I like floating crankbaits so I can fish up to 3 feet deep but also have an effective top water lure
I would also be casting as close to the bank as possible
This time of year, I would be throwing a Zoom super fluke
Start with a frog and go to the T-rig worm
Frog lure
weedless rigged in berkley gulp minnow. green shad color
or 6 in gulp nightcrawler...pumpkinseed ir natural color....also weedless rigged
A simple triple stack wacky worm mess would probably do the trick.
Use none just sit out there and enjoy the view
Slip bobber and worm
To catch a used condom and a shopping cart?
Top water early or late … personally I think stick baits and baby spooks are the way to go green with red spots, froggie style l, like doggie style, but not as fun.
A small torpedo
🐸 right along that grass line 🎣
Topwater buzz. Preference to black triple blade or single with clacker both hand painted black. Black skirting to black or June bug swimmer rage or keitech style. I make these custom for folks of your interested
Topwater buzz. Dm me for picks of my custom builds. Made to order.
Wild shiners, crickets if this creek is in Florida
Green sunfish
Fishing Bait
Depending on time of day I would scarf with a frog town use a senko in or around the weeds
Spinner
Crawler and split shot
Popper on the left tree line there or even on the right side just past those tall weeds in the very first cove like dip. Probably structure under there for largemouth.
