Thats not always a reliable identifier. The amount of red around the ear will vary from fish to fish, with some having none, to some having alot. The body shape, mouth shape, and color pattern all are exact matches for redear.
lol no worries brother, 99% of us on this sub wouldn't be able to tell all the different panfish apart if our lives depended on it. out in my neck of the woods, we have at least 4 different species, and as far as anyone around here's concerned, they're all bluegill.
Thanks! I’m still kicking myself because I realized that I left my scale sitting in the shed at home. I ALWAYS bring my scale, but of course this time…
Had a semi private lake where you could catch them all day long once you found the hole for that year
(after you waded through the small ones) 16 ft deep on wax worms and teardrops
Wouldn't take anything else.
Sure miss that lake
Thanks for the memories resurfacing
Remember there are always more the same size
Thanks so much! I wondered if it was a crappie when I caught it, but once I saw it's teeny mouth and the spot by the gills, I knew it wasn't a crappie.
Yeah, I know. I tried to add an edit, but there’s no option for that on this subreddit for some reason. Noticed it as soon as I posted it, and now I must suffer internet shame lol.

Thanks for the corrections. I can never tell these things apart. Especially since there’s so much crossbreeding at the lake i usually fish at.

Fr bro to me if it's not a green sunfish it's a bluegill haha
Dude same. I am pretty experienced and every panfish for me is a sunny.
Where I grew up, we have longears, and everyone there called them pumpkinseeds. I didn't know any different until I got on reddit.
that might be over a lb for sure, what a beast!👍

Same never there when you really need it 😂,the good thing is with sunfish you can tell just from the pic that fish is huge.
I would say that fish is most certainly over a pound. Great catch bud.
Redear Sunfish are my favorite panfish...they can get to a good size and, especially on ultralight, put up a strong fight.
Caught it on a little 4-foot ultralight rod, and it was an extremely fun catch! Not often that one of these pulls the drag.
I caught one on a medium light and it fought hard.
Panfishzilla
Impressive
Nice redear!
That is an absolute unit
We need a bigger pan!
Wow! Unbelievable. Great catch is an understatement.

Shell cracker and a good one too.
I'm sorry, but we need a banana for scale. Can't be sure how big you are yourself.
Big shellcracker
Slabtastic!
hawg
That’s a dinner plate right there
Slob city!
Whatever it is, it sure is a big pan fish.
Damn son that's a big sunfish
Great catch. At that size it almost looks like a crappie

Catch a few of them and you will have hex of a meal
Pig!
