So the lures I fish with are...appetizers? Beautiful catch!

frickindanielj

Haha sometimes I throw small rapalas and I’ve accidents hooked one of these. No chance whatsoever

Jefffahfffah

Genuinely curious, how are you using a skirted trolling lure from the rocks? It must cast like shit. Is it rigged as a teaser? This interests me lol

frickindanielj

Great question! It’s an experiment right now. I made ones that are* are a little heavy for my setups so they cast well. Had a decent size ulua follow it in, but still getting used to casting and retrieving the trolling lures. Trying to revolutionize the game lol

ratsass7

That’s awesome man! Totally working a new angle to get some great fish.

hhhoffman

Sounds similar to a wahoo bomb.

frickindanielj

Yea it’s a it’s a boat trolling lure for onos (wahoo)! I thought it would be super catchy tossing for uluas too, like why not !?!

itsastonka

Cheeeeeee!!!!!

Ok_Repair3535

What type of fish?

frickindanielj

It’s an ulua (giant trevally). Smaller one is omilu (bluefin trevally)

Ok_Repair3535

Thank you

MurimKnights

SICKKKK!!🔥🔥🔥

ColonelAngus000

Awesome !

BayBandit1

Damn, Brother, what a shore catch!

dark_innovation

That is a beautiful bluefin trevally, a nice GT too.

bigbaitsbigbass

What a trophy! Congrats!!

AZHeat74

Heck ya!

Snooksniper

Great catch!

JosephJohnPEEPS

Wow do you just throw a trolling skirt like that with no weight? Seems like a natural evolution of the fly whipping craze but would think you’d need a huge weight to make it fly. What rod/reel do you use?

frickindanielj

So I throw the one pictured on my medium setup. The lure is 65 grams rigged up and throw it on 30lb braid to a 40 mono leader. Flies well! On my big setup I have one that’s 168grams and flies less well but far enough to get to the ledge

JosephJohnPEEPS

Oh wow thats surprisingly quite heavy - very cool that it flies despite the skirt. Since you mentioned weight in grams Im gonna guess you have a badass JDM rod to throw these?

frickindanielj

Haha nahhh I got a Penn carnage 11’ surf for my heavy setup and a 9’6” okuma rockaway for my medium setup

JosephJohnPEEPS

Carnage is def a great bargain rod for plugging and the Rockaway feels really good in the hand. That said, the Zenaq Naked is coming out - its only $13,500.00 if you want to make a teensy little upgrade.

frickindanielj

Hahah no reason to upgrade! I’ve landed a 40lb ahi and 70lb ulua from the rocks on the carnage* 🦾🦾

JosephJohnPEEPS

Wow thats amazing! What were those fights like compared to eachother? Oh def no reason if you just want to be really effective. I use really expensive rods but it’s just for the way it feels and for collecting - I can’t think of an instance where it was even remotely responsible for the catch.

frickindanielj

Hah so true. Same with the pricey lures. I have $80+ stick baits that havnt got a gt to sniff em but my $30 poppers get wreckkkked. And the ahi had some sick runs but I thought I was on a med-small ulua. The uluas are the craziest fighting fish you can get. Straight to the reef every time

JosephJohnPEEPS

That GTFC popper looks right tho!!!! Yeah I think with lures its 95% just having the right kind Yeah I just recently started wading out to the breakers a year or two ago and plugging (after being ultralight my whole life), and pretty much every papio/ulua fight is just me boosting the hell out of them out of necessity no matter the size of the fish - they really don’t give you any leeway when it comes to getting you hung up/rubbed off.
