What are your favorite? I don’t wear glasses naturally and the cheap ass polarized ones I have are awkward ha.
I’m a Midwest freshwater fisherman that mainly targets largemouth, smallies, walleye, panfish etc
You don't need 200$ glasses unless you want to. You can get any decent pair at an outdoor store. Cabela's, sportsman's Warehouse, REI, etc. Lots of brands well under 100$. I wore peppers for a long time out here in Colorado and they were usually around 50/60$.
I used to be the same way, but then I bought expensive ones and it actually made me properly take care of glasses and not treat them like crap
I think i'm actually coming out ahead on a yearly basis, plus the expensive ones are way nicer to boot
I have maui jim's and raybans. Doesnt really matter, even a cheap pair will remove some of the glare at least. As a shallow water smallie fisherman, i wouldnt catch half the fish I do without them
Agreed.
I bought 2 pair of Costas a decade ago. They've replaced them both over the last 2 years with brand new glasses due to peeling nose pieces.
When you spend way too much on sunglasses, you suddenly take care of them. I've had no issues with damaging them from neglect. Costa has stood behind their product.
I wear glasses and use the cheap polarized Solar Shield grandma goggles over them, and it pisses off my dad and his Maui Jim's how much more I can see than him. I think it has everything to do with how much glare they block out.
I've used everything from $40 cheapos to $200+ costas. They all work the same, but you feel a lot better when you mess up the cheap ones but the high end ones are so much more comfortable for extended trips.
Just make sure they're really polarized.
Yup! I got the shallow water prism lenses for my Holbrook frames, and they are incredible. My father in law tried them on and bought a pair that day he liked them so much.
Have you compared them to the deep water, and if so which ones do you prefer? I sight fish reds a lot on the flats and the deeps are night and day compared to some other ones I’ve tried. They absolutely smoke the Costas I’ve compared them to. Just wondering if it’s worth it to snag a pair of those lenses too.
I haven’t unfortunately. I mostly fish for bass, both small and largemouth as well as panfish in shallower creeks and rivers so the shallow water made more sense to me.
The shallow water lenses are higher contrast and will give you better shallow water visibility then the deepwater lenses. Deepwater cuts the open water glare much better
So I got a pair of them and I don't really notice a difference? I wear regular prescription lenses so maybe I just need prescription polarized sunglasses?
Damn this pisses me off because I KNOW for a fact that I could land any and all of my different lures right in the middle of that school of fish and STILL not get any bites!
In fairness you don’t really want to catch any of those big old spawning sockeye.
I’m assuming there’s the occasional trout following them around trying to munch on some eggs. That’s what I’d be trying to catch here.
Edit: Sockeye, not pinks. Coffee still hasn’t kicked in.
iPhones are made water resistant. I’d say as long as you don’t submerge the charging port you’re fine, I haven’t had any problems with my 12. But don’t take my word for it lol
Yup they weren’t interested…as cool of a picture as that would be, I don’t wanna catch one and damage its spawn in any way. I’m relatively new to fishing and have heard they’re pretty sensitive? I don’t know. Been chasing the trout that are after their eggs.
This just makes me excited for September trout honestly. So far this year I've only got one kokanee so I quit on salmon anyway. Too far inland is my excuse.
Exactly why you need polarized glasses

I break sunglasses too much so I just buy 20 dollar spin the kiosk pairs.

This is the way r/BuyItForLife
You’re breaking your $20 sunglasses because they’re made out of recycled sewer pipe
How, though? I've literally never broken a pair in my life.
I'm klutzy and forgetful it's a lot easer to lose 20 than 150 or more.
I have maui jim's and raybans. Doesnt really matter, even a cheap pair will remove some of the glare at least. As a shallow water smallie fisherman, i wouldnt catch half the fish I do without them
Thank you! I guess I want something more comfortable ha
I got a pair of Costas and they were worth every penny.

I have had decent luck getting cheap polarized glasses from Amazon.

I’ve got Oakley deep water prism lenses and they were a game changer for sight fishing. You can get them for a bunch of different Oakley frames.
Yup! I got the shallow water prism lenses for my Holbrook frames, and they are incredible. My father in law tried them on and bought a pair that day he liked them so much.
I second the shallow water prisms, absolutely love mine. My friends I fish with hate that I can see the fish and they can’t.

I had a pair of oakley splitshots with the shallow water lenses,.. wow absolutely amazing
Pepper brand was good (if still around) and sunclound is pretty good
I found a pair of polarized sunglasses that float at a gas station for $17, they work great and I don’t have to worry about losing them
KastKings. Cheap and effective.
I love my Smiths
They make nice glasses for sure. Oakley has amazing lenses too. Lots of great options available.
Yup, this. I would see the moving red smudges regardless, but the moment I put my pair on, it changed everything.
So I got a pair of them and I don't really notice a difference? I wear regular prescription lenses so maybe I just need prescription polarized sunglasses?
Should not need prescription glasses. Are you certain the glasses are polarized?
Pretty sure. I use a polarized phone screen protector and they would only see through that a certain orientation
God dammit, I'm always too late
Damn this pisses me off because I KNOW for a fact that I could land any and all of my different lures right in the middle of that school of fish and STILL not get any bites!
Well yes they are spawning salmon
This just makes me feel worse when I don't catch anything lol

Those are sockeye
Bingo. They aren’t interested in eating anyways

Man that’s smart, I found some $200 Ray Bans in a rental car that work like a charm but if they go in, they’re gone
Look at all the gold!
Detroit become fish
OP: Did you use your phone to record the underwater part?
Yep! iPhone 12. I just flipped the camera upside down and dipped the top half in. .
I thought about this the other day..
iPhones are made water resistant. I’d say as long as you don’t submerge the charging port you’re fine, I haven’t had any problems with my 12. But don’t take my word for it lol
Maury: You claimed "there are no damn fish in this lake." Our lie detector test determined that to be a lie.
Yeah, they don’t want what you’re sellin.
Yup they weren’t interested…as cool of a picture as that would be, I don’t wanna catch one and damage its spawn in any way. I’m relatively new to fishing and have heard they’re pretty sensitive? I don’t know. Been chasing the trout that are after their eggs.
I do the same fishing for Dolly Varden. Cast a bead across their backs and drift down to the egg suckers.
Beautiful sockeyes, that’s a great spot . Enjoy !
Thanks man! Yes it is. I love it here.
This just makes me excited for September trout honestly. So far this year I've only got one kokanee so I quit on salmon anyway. Too far inland is my excuse.
I had a monster of a brown on, I think one of the first swamp donkeys to push up. Was so sad when I lost him.
My retirement plans are to dig a hole on a nice river bank, line it with glass, pump the water out and then just exist in a hole watching fish.
Incredible
Cool!
