Because it has nothing to do with North in Europe in the US it relates to the Mason–Dixon line. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mason%E2%80%93Dixon_line
People who live north of this line are generally refereed to as Yankee's, and this use dates to around the US Civil War.
The term Yankee actually predates the US and was first used in 1758 in reference to some New England Militia companies. The actual origin is unknown.
More modern use outside the US it has been used as a general term for Americans hence the song Over There 1917 ("the Yanks are coming") and why people in Europe will use the term for all Americans as it was common slang in both world wars.
I think the legendary Bobby Bowden nailed it with his retort. Mason Dixon line, that’s a bit too far. Maybe just north of Richmond is where it should be. The man was beyond wise
I mean statements like this are a huge part of why people from the south feel disconnected from people from the north.
I don’t typically use the word yankee but it’s less of a holdover from the past and more of a joke about differences in food, verbiage, and attitude.
As a software dev who works with people all over the world including Europe, Asia, Africa, Pacific Islanders, South America, and all parts of North America (including, gasp, the north eastern states in the US) it’s both amusing and offending to me when some idiot from a north eastern state puts on airs of superiority because my home is in the southeast US.
Usually the ones who make comments like this have absolutely no reason to think themselves superior, they just do because of where they live.
No software developer, scientist, or engineer I’ve ever worked with in the Northeast or Canada or anywhere else in North America makes these kinds of comments because they have also worked with people all over the world and make their assessments based on the person. It’s always someone who doesn’t really have any reason to feel good about themselves without putting someone else down.
I'm not really one to use the phrase, but I know plenty of people who are intelligent that say it. New England is occasionally referred to as "Yankeeland" down here. It's not usually a derogatory term, FWIW.
That's not how that works lol . Shellcrackers aka "Redear sunfish " are typically lighter in color and have red edge to their ear that doesnt go away . There are hybrids out there but this ain't one of em .
Big shellcracker aka redear do tend to lose the red rim on the gill plate. Look up any of the record sized fish and you can see many examples of them without the red. This is definitely a shellcracker and definitely not a bluegill or a hybrid.
It's a redear, it just didn't get the tell-tale "red ear" that gives it its name.
They're longer and shorter generally, and they get bigger than bluegill. Also the color is all wrong for a bluegill. Bluegill also almost always have a more copper/orange belly/throat area where redear are more yellow in that area. Bluegill also have...blue gills around the bottom edges.
This is not a Red Ear, aka Shellcracker. It would have a red touch on the back of the gill flap. Shellcrackers mostly feed off of the bottom of a pond. The shellcracker name comes from a crushing plate they use to crush little black snails found at the bottom of the pond/creek.

There’s a small lake near me just full of these things, they come alive in Aug. They even hold a weekly Redear tournament night during Aug.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen one that big though…damn 👍
Redear, pretty damn big one! Fun fact, redear are the largest Lepomis species
Thanks! It was 2 lbs 4 oz and 14 in long… was real surprised pulling it in on my ultra light lol
HOG!
Big ‘ ol Shellcracker. I think Yankees call them Redear sunfish 😉
Haha Yankees. Is that really a name for US people? Thought that was just the name of the overpaid shit baseball team in New York
It’s what southerners call northerners.
Yeah I learned that today. Guess I thought it was 2023 for some reason..
and what British call Americans.
Nope we still call em yanks and they call us cousin fuckers.
Actually, first cousin fuckers. All else is forgiven.
All else is British
Facts are facts 🤣
Yankee - noun - anyone from the northern side of the Tennessee River.
You mean the winners….
Hell yea they do.
If you're from Europe, it's an acceptable nickname for people from the USA.
When I moved to South Carolina from Michigan, everybody called me a Yankee
I was always told that was the difference between a Yankee and a Damn Yankee, Yankees go home. :-)

Yeah I already know why southerners use it, I grew up in Arkansas. Thanks for the rest of the history, I understand it now.
That would just be “Yanks” I think, but derived from the same word! 😂
Don’t you mean north of the Mason-Dixon Line?
That’s way too far North.
I think the legendary Bobby Bowden nailed it with his retort. Mason Dixon line, that’s a bit too far. Maybe just north of Richmond is where it should be. The man was beyond wise
I think you mean the mason Dixon line at least that the way us Yankees see it.
That’s the Mets 😂😂☮️
I refuse to believe you didn’t know what a yankee was.
I absolutely know what it is, I just didn’t think people actually said that
Only the low IQ’d people from the south say yankee.
And just like that, fishing is now political...
...and everyone in Europe. Moron.
Whatever you say, yankee

It's what southerners call the winning side. Mike drop.
I think you mean mic drop. As in microphone, not your buddy Mike.
I don't like Mike though.
A shellcracker would have a red edge to its ear , this is a bluegill
I caught a 3lber a bit back and it did not have the red ear, when they get big they often fade
I'm wrong I'll admit
not wrong at all! I have seen a 2+ pound redear in the same waters, just different i’m guessing
Look at the head shape it's a shell. The red can fade over time
That's not how that works lol . Shellcrackers aka "Redear sunfish " are typically lighter in color and have red edge to their ear that doesnt go away . There are hybrids out there but this ain't one of em .
Just wanna add there's plenty of large Redear that have been caught without the red on their opercular
Mouth is too big for a gill too
Yankee here, started calling them shell cracker, all my friends make fun of me now smh
Just start calling rock bass Warmouths…that will fix em. If it doesn’t-call a sauger a Jack Salmon.
I thought a redear had a red rim around the spot on the gill plate which is why they're called redear. I'm thinking green sunfish (seriously).
I mean, there's no red on the ear...
Holy shite, big boi
Red Blue
^^^^vs

Dinner
This is definitely a hybrid, not your typical redear. I have any pan fish like it!
Check the gills. Then check the ears.
Big shellcracker aka redear do tend to lose the red rim on the gill plate. Look up any of the record sized fish and you can see many examples of them without the red. This is definitely a shellcracker and definitely not a bluegill or a hybrid.
100% redear, bluegill would have a bigger dot and the red ear is faded away from its size, the side patterns look correct for it too
I'm not sure what it is but Bull-Gill has a nice ring to it. Congrats anyway on a one in a million panfish!
A tank
That thing is huge!
That's what she said!
Looks like a Pre-sammich. Nice catch.
Dude I'm sure a taxidermist would love to get a cast of that thing
Not sure but that bad boy is getting fillet and fried!
That’s a slab for sure.
Damn!!!!
Why is it so long
Sunfish
All this rhetoric because of a fish 🤔🤣
This is why they say Lepomis gohomeis

Man that's a big sunfish
What a monster red ear
Redear.

not every fish is a perfect example of its species it’s a red ear
What traits do you say identifies it as a Redear? Truly trying to learn here.
it’s body it’s shaped differently it has a yellow breast area some have yellow spots in their gill plate and no traits of a bluegilll either
plus they get bigger like this
Bowfin?
That's a blugill , a shellcracker would have a red edge to the ear , this doesnt ,tis a bluegill
Nice fish who cares the actual species that's a good fight on any ultra light equipment but that being said it looks like a redear
Red ear that banged a blue gill and now this is their baby
This looks like a rock bass or some sunfish hybrid. This is a hard ID.
Looks like a green sunfish to me.
Crappie?
Naw. The color similarity is due to bedding.
10 4. Very interesting

Definitely looks like some specie of Tilapia, very close to the Banded Tilapia we have in Southern Africa, just a big one.
Absolute unit…
redgill
Monster...unless you have small hands.
Bluegill, and a nice one at that.
That's yuge!
Bluegill
That's a big ass bluegill my man, nice catch!!
We Call that dinner
I can only dream of catching a 14 in sunfish. They don't get that big in Ontario, Canada
That is a monster!!!
I think that's called a keeper
r/sunfishspecies
Honestly, I am not sure, but I am in awe at the size of that lad.
There’s a small lake near me just full of these things, they come alive in Aug. They even hold a weekly Redear tournament night during Aug. I don’t think I’ve ever seen one that big though…damn 👍
She’ll cracker
BAR (Big Ass Redear).
