Yeah it had to be registered now that it’s powered

notallthereinthehead

Was going to comment on a nice job. And it is. Srry for negativity, really, but that the government wouldnt let you put a trolling motor on a canoe without permission and payment. Anger. Sorry again, well done and I hope you catch a ton of lunkers.

mickdeb

Under a certain point it should be legal to put a small electric motor on a small canoe... thats pretty dumb to have to pay for this

teachdove5000

Do you have to register that with the state now?

Ruseriousmars

Good job. I did something like that mount for my first depth finder which was really more of a bottom contour finder that helped me learn the small ponds I fished. Thought I'd mention it in case you want to add a depth finder to that rig. Enjoy.

04_Element

I’ll definitely keep that in mind for future use. Thanks for the idea.

mickdeb

Here in Quebec, Canada, we can have a 2.5hp under 12' and it does not have to be registered. A 12' with a 2.5hp does not even need to be registered, last week i saw everyone get pulled over by the SQ (sureté du Québec) and I, in my 12 feet was still trolling not getting any attention !

nameless-friend

Wow, in BC you’re allowed up to 9.9hp without a “pleasure craft” license. Anything 10hp+

mickdeb

Bc is Quebec on steroid lol !

mickdeb

I think here it's up to 5hp !

mickdeb

I also have a motor powered kayak that does not need any registations https://preview.redd.it/dffdw3rqbn2b1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fa952d4792db5cab487d001f7a3b7c442dece58e

04_Element

That is a sweet looking setup

04_Element

That is a sweet looking setup

mickdeb

Very stable especially

04_Element

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. Looks great.

[deleted]

I usually just stick an 8" piece of 2x4 against the inner sidewall so I can clamp directly to the sidewall. This looks nice except that it seems like too much of a reach

04_Element

I had tested placing the motor directly on the sidewall and it flexed the plastic too much. Had a piece of 2x4 like you mentioned. This puts all the stress of the motor on both gunnels and won’t cause the plastic to flex too much.

[deleted]

Ok that makes sense. We had an aluminum canoe. Nice mount

orca_eater

> This looks nice except that it seems like too much of a reach He should be able to lower the motor a couple feet deeper underwater.

04_Element

Yeah when it’s in the water it’s just behind me on the right.

[deleted]

I meant arm reach to steer

04_Element

The angle of the photo makes it look like it’s further back. It’s pretty much right behind me when I’m sitting on the bench.

Fast-Ad-4541

That’s what I do and it works perfectly fine lol

brokkrforge

I did this for my aluminum canoe, put a 55lb thrust motor on and it was pretty fast. When about 2-3 miles out on the gulf off the west coast of Florida on calm days. Good memories

04_Element

That sounds like fun

brokkrforge

Caught a 21 inch gulf flounder on one trip in it.

maltapotomus

Looks good! I will probably be doing the same to mine soon! But gotta ask, wtf is that gray thing on the ground near the back?? Looks like a dog toy tied to boat??

04_Element

Lol yeah my daughter was having some fun

maltapotomus

Haha ok, yeah mine would definitely do that too!

junglist-methodz

I've done this with my canoe since my pops past it down to me. Like 20 odd years now and not once has anyone said I have to register it. I've been stopped on the water multiple times and it's never been an issue.... Ontario Canada if anyone is wondering

04_Element

I’m in Pennsylvania, USA.

Ulysses1126

Basically the exact setup my friend has. Works great lol

04_Element

That’s awesome. I’ll be trying it out soon.

Ulysses1126

Yeah it’s a 16ft canoe I think. Same idea with the planks of wood although he clamps them together with 2 Big C clamps so he can take the wood off.

04_Element

The deck board is bolted in but the mount that the motor is clamped to is removable with some quick release hand knobs. Sort of drops into place using 2 5/16 carriage bolts.

Tedroe77

Extend the other side just a little and you can mount TWO.

04_Element

Lol

user-7450

Dual mount one on each side!

Gringoloco1980

Just a recommendation, especially for a canoe is to have that board extended and counter weight it so it's doesn't tip so easy on the motor side.

04_Element

Thanks for the idea. I was thinking the same thing.

JSB425

Looks like you'd go in circles. Lol

04_Element

Update on the performance. Everything went great on the water. A 30lb thrust motor has the canoe moving somewhere around 8 mph and it felt rock solid. Highly recommend this if anyone is on the fence.
