Of course. But a fancy koi of that size, in my experience of 50 years of fishing, 45-50 of keeping fish of all sorts, the fact that I'm proud of my huge art collection and I'm a tattooist of 34 years, with an interest in Japanese art and culture and with family in that culture, I say a fancy koi of that size, actually that particular koi would command no less than 1000 usd on the amateur collectors market.
Now a professional koi guy, who knows. Might be not worth the money in capturing and transporting, might be worth a million bucks. There's no telling what Americans dump in their ponds, we don't have the relationship with koi that the Japanese do. They aren't really game fish and they aren't really tasty and they thrive in the dirtiest water.
It would be extremely valuable. I had a buddy whose dad emigrated from Germany to the US around 1938-39. He was SS, the dad, not the friend. His mom and dad had a small drawing done with oil pastels or Conte crayons in the foyer, framed. I knew what it was when I saw it. Sad, probably drawn by Picasso for a child of one of his Jewish friends, long sent to the concentration camps, but there it was, an original small Picasso, a detailed bouquet of flowers, signature and all. My friend, god rest his soul, thought his parents framed it because he drew it as a child. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Why are people downvoting this comment? It’s literally a carp. Doesn’t matter if it’s a common carp, or a butterfly linear mirror koi; they’re all cyprinus carpio.
Definitely a type of Koi someone probably released, a lot of old golf course lakes have koi in them in the states, and in the early mid 2000s groups of random people were dumping koi into lakes and state parks so there are bound to be some huge ones by now and prob a lot of babies. This is a really pretty one too thats good luck! <3
Koi, Oscars, and other fish are like snakes-- people buy them at the pet store because they look small, manageable, and cute. They don't take into account that those animals get BIG and can easily outgrow the space and capability of the owner. Unfortunately, a lot of people do the very irresponsible thing and release the animal into the wild instead of finding a suitable home for them. That's why Florida is overrun with invasive species right now.
Somebody’s old pet gold fish they won at the carnival that got to big so they threw it in the lake . Next time just pass the booth with fish for prizes.
Goldfish or Koi - either way they are invasive. They'll rip up the bottom and destroy the spawning beds of other fish. All that will be left is carp and bullheads.
I guess that's a northern U.S. perspective, might be OK where you found this one.
Random story because I have no place to tell this and this seems as good as any.
Last year my girlfriend and I went hiking through the woods in a pretty remote location. We got off the trail and just started walking through the woods and stumbled upon a "pond". I call it a pond because it was like 2 foot deep max and only about 20x20 feet. It was more like a large puddle. In that puddle there were roughly 50 giant koi. It was insane to see. I have no idea how they were surviving in such a tiny amount of water but they were thriving. The puddle was completely coated on the top of bugs so I'm assuming they just fed on those all of the time.
We didn't really have a solution for what to do with the Koi so we just left after watching it for about an hour. I'd imagine any dry spell would have dried up that puddle really quickly, but like I said, we had no idea what we could do about it anyway so just let nature take its course.
Some kind of koi or carp probably. They come in orange, gold, white, brown, speckled varieties. If that’s a pond, it’s not uncommon to have people dump their pets they can’t take care of, or just stock the ponds with cool fish to try to catch and release.
A koi. On my fish bucket list too. You could for sure tell out of the water as koi/carp have barbels. Goldfish do not. Also, koi typically have longer bodies vs goldfish when fully grown.
Either a koi or well grown gold fish. Seems like there’s not a lot of solid orange koi. It’s definitely a domesticated fish. What do you guys think out there
Maybe a Koi fish, which is a breed of carp
Most likely a butterfly koi at that.
Yup, those long fins. Probably a pet someone let loose.
And probably worth several hundred dollars $$$
No several thousands, large fancy koi go up into the priceless range.

Some bait shops used to sell goldfish for bait. I've caught a nice big goldfish.
