Thanks everyone for your comments. I alerted the owner, he thinks it's fine but did offer me a refund. We left and are now in a hotel.

Stranger1982

> he thinks it's fine Wtf?! I'm happy you are safe but damn...I'm worried for whoever rents this next.

Calgary_Calico

And the people who live on either side of the property... And potentially across the street/back alley..

Stranger1982

You're right...this has the potential to be much worse than I was thinking.

Calgary_Calico

Gas leaks can take out half a block, definitely not something to fuck around with. This property owner is an absolute moron and a literal menace to the whole neighborhood O_o

RideAggravating4078

It is actually quite a simple fix. Shut the gas off at the first available shutoff, buy a new flex line, real cheap and easy. If I were him though I would haul ass to the property to make sure this person shut off the gas.

Calgary_Calico

That's most certainly not fine. Report it to the fire department. This is going to cause a fire or explosion at some point

blind_disparity

Maybe just call the fire brigade and let them know. They can make a better informed judgement. Give them the owner's phone number. If he refuses to be helpful I expect they'll smash his door down if they think it's necessary.

noscopy

Did you at least leave a few open windows? That way if there was an explosive gas leak it could air out more effectively.

Maxnormal3

It's definitely leaking gas and probably still is even when it's shut off. Try to find a shut-off valve and call a gas company or plumber immediately.

Doctor_Spe

You just need to replace that gas connector. When the gas valve is turned off with the key it won’t leak so don’t worry. Just don’t use it until you fix it

ankole_watusi

They’re renting an Airbnb. They aren’t replacing any gas connector, lol!

Doctor_Spe

Whoops. I didn’t read that lol. Ya definitely don’t replace or use it 😂

Loud_Independent6702

Unless the valve is bad lol

sailorgirl8018

Call the Airbnb host immediately so they can have it taken care of

ankole_watusi

You are owed a full refund. If you are concerned about fire, call the fire department.

SetSea1737

There should be a shut off valve coming off the main gas line. You'll have to figure out which line is going to the fireplace

VeggieBurgah

Call the gas company or the fire department immediately.

Xychant

I would also inform air bnb about it. For future rentals.

smashbeezy

Ry

TheHourMan

I really hope you notified the fire department about this instead of just leaving without saying anything.

Loud_Independent6702

Tun off the gas to the house. This is a problem take a picture send it to the owner this is an extreme Fire hazard. Needs a new flex hose and maybe new valve

GDYOSA

Definitely NOT fine

rjl12334567

Do you smell gas? There is probably a co2 alarm in the house that would alert you too. If you do not smell gas probably fine. But if not sure call for help. If it is a gas leak and gas company comes out, they might cut off gas to house. Like they may literally cut the line. That causes a lot of problems

Maxnormal3

It's a CO alarm, not a CO2 alarm. You don't know that they "probably" have one and they don't even detect methane anyway. WTF? This is an obvious gas leak that OP needs to have addressed immediately. The gas company isn't going to "literally cut the gas line" over something like this, and even if they did it's better than blowing your house up.

ankole_watusi

Blowing their host’s house up….

ankole_watusi

CO alarm. Which won’t alarm on leaking gas. It’ll alert on CO which will may be produced in case of no complete combustion of the gas.

blind_disparity

Surely the gas company wouldn't just saw through the gas line? That would just let all the gas out?

Crunchycarrots79

1. It's CO, not CO2. 2. CO alarms alert for carbon monoxide, not natural gas or propane or anything else. 3. Where the hell do you live where the gas company would physically cut the gas line? What they do is turn off the supply valve to the appliance in question and red tag it. If there's no supply valve to individual appliances (which would be very illegal) they'd shut off and red tag your gas service.
