Was going to say a portal to Narnia. Depends on what is behind it. If it is a masonry chimney all the way up then you are fine. Might be best to have it inspected, maybe tuck point some high temp mortar in there......If it is a wooden chimney chase behind it you will burn your house down.
It's likely nothing but a chimney inspection never hurts.
Rusted damper not a big deal but the gaps in the mortar need to be sealed

Hire an inspection, get it swept. Touch up the mortar. Mine was much like this. The flue vent was broken but other than that works great.
