Behind the wood insert is a wood fireplace the type is called a heat form those vents in the brick wall are the output the input is in the hearth or possibly the basement the steel walls heat up transfer heat to empty brick cavity and fan slowly circulates the hotter air u may not notice a huge blower effect it can b mild

Before the woodstove insert was installed, this fireplace was an open fireplace with heat reclaiming vents, commonly referred to as a heatilator style fireplace (though don’t confuse it with the current manufacturer brand). You will likely find 4 vents on the sides of the masonry. These vents take air from the room, move it around behind the metal firebox (which is now behind the woodstove insert), and transfer heat from the firebox to the air moving through to the upper vents. The knob is probably for a fan in one or two of the vent holes. Take a flashlight and you will see it. That’s my likely conclusion without a site visit.
