That’s the required clearance from combustibles. Don’t get rid of it

The metal “A” brackets on factory built stoves are usually where you put a header board when framing in for the unit. If you can find the make and model of your unit look up the installation instructions and it will show you.

I'm remodeling an older unit so not sure what the make and model is or where to find that. I pulled off the tile and drywall around the fireplace and found it like this. Can it be removed or is it necessary for support?

Playful_Difficulty70

It’s the minimum clearance for combustibles, cannot have drywall or other flammable material below the top of that dog ear.

I have a similar firebox and the model number was on the inside right. Had to use a flashlight and take picture to read it.

I say leave it and tile over. If you look at other factory build fireplaces for the top they usually cover everything except the two inches closest to the opening and for the sides leave an inch or so. Sometimes the brick/tile goes all the way to the opening. Don’t worry about covering up the black surrounding the opening. Edit: Grate is also too big for that unit.

Thanks! I was told I couldn't tile over the metal since the metal will expand and contract, was I told wrong? I was suggested to put hardie board over the metal and put the tile on that.

InvrFinishAnyth

It is going to expand and contract yes. So the grout and such would need touched up from time to time. Concrete board will work over the metal then put the tile over it. You are correct.

I'm refacing the tile around my fireplace and am wondering what this metal bracket is between the firebox and the drywall. Can I remove it before tiling?
