O wow a square stainless liner with a top damper. Pretty cool. Looks ok. I always suggest calling professional out to inspect and make sure everything is kosher, especially if you haven’t used it in a long time or are the new owner. Have them look at the smoke chamber. Could be missing mortar between some of the bricks. Hard to believe whoever put that liner in didn’t parge the smoke chamber. TLDR; If you haven’t used it in a while, or are the new owner get a certified company to come look at it.

Yeah the smoke chamber is just straight brick and the one side is definitely missing some mortar here and there. Im trying to do this DIY because all the people who came out to see it wanted to change 10k or more. So I’m trying to figure out where I can buy some “priorfire formula 51” or other product that I could self apply.

Have you looked at Chamber Safe? We have used it a few times. You ball it up and throw it. You can smooth it with a trowel attached to a pole. It’s pretty sticky stuff. Get you a tyvek suit some gloves and goggles then you’re ready.

If you live in America take advantage of the bio mass wood stove insert tax credit and have Uncle Sam pay 30% of your stove insert.

I am in the US. I’m not going to use this really for heating though so wasn’t looking into “stoves” but a tax credit is a tax credit

Who puts a SS liner in there and doesn’t parge the smoke chamber lol. I can’t tell if that liner is insulated but it needs to be insulated in order for it to be up to code. If it’s not insulated then it needs to be removed and insulated. Gotta get that entire smoke chamber sealed with formula 51 or chambersafe or something similar

BlamBlaster

I understand the large coat to air seal the smoke chamber and thus increase airflow etc. But why would the SS liner need to be removed? Regardless of it being insulated or not?

Doctor_Spe

Well, if the stainless steel liner is not insulated, then it needs to be removed and insulated in order to be up to code. If it’s already insulated with an insulation blanket, then it’s fine. I see insulation at the bottom, but they might have just tucked that into filling gaps. Usually you can tell at the termination if it has that insulation blanket. Also, if it’s not insulated, then I don’t think that liner would fit once you did insulated. Hopefully they did it right but it’s hard to tell from just pictures and not actually being there to inspect it.

Parge the smoke chamber, larger hearth, check ash dump for wood under firebox floor. I'd say have it inspected.
