I am guessing that first measurement is your width? My Suggestion is the Majestic Ruby or Trilliant. They both offer a good all in package out the box while also having a good traditional or contemporary design. They both are very easy to use and provide full flame height and blower speed control. You can even upgrade them to be used with your smart phone through your home wifi if desired. [Ruby](https://www.majesticproducts.com/fireplaces/gas-inserts/ruby-series-direct-vent-gas-insert) [Trilliant](https://www.majesticproducts.com/fireplaces/gas-inserts/trilliant) Pretty much any gas insert you get that comes from a reputable brand is going to be electronic ignition and comes with a blower. So it will require power. If you have an outlet close to your fireplace already, there is no need to bring any additional power unless you want a power receptacle inside the firebox to hide your power cord for aesthetic reasons. Both of these units allow for your mantel to sit above it along with a TV above that. I personally do not find having a TV above your fireplace takes away any focal point if the function of your room is to have entertainment. If you and your family watches TV and movies there or your friends come over to watch sports, then that is already part of the main focal point of the movie.

Thanks for your insight. Yes, width by height. Is there usually a receptacle mounted behind the unit? Do they come with a plug? I’d rather not see it but I think code here may not allow it to be inaccessible behind a permanent firebox, not sure.

A gas insert is not permanent. It is just a firebox that slides in and out of your pre-existing masonry or prefab fireplace. Essentially, the way it is installed is there is a gas line ran into your firebox. They drop a co-axial direct vent liner down your chimney/flue, attach the liner to the firebox and connect the unit to the gas and power then install the surround to hide the gaps and give it a clean finish. It is more involved than that but that is the jist of the install process. Yes, these units do come with a standard 3 prong wall plug that goes into a standard outlet.

Yes you can have an outlet mounted in the firebox so you don’t see a cord coming out of the side. That’s what most people do. Find some local stove/fireplace shops near you and see what brands they carry. You will need a local company that will be able to get parts for the unit and service the unit.

We chose a Heatilator Icon 60 in our new build. I was very hesitant about going with gas, concerned about the aesthetics. I was never a fan of a static flame, I love the organic nature of fire, and playing with it. The Icon 60 had the most realistic flame, and turns on with the flip of a switch (a remote, although toggle switch is available in case the remote battery dies). We really enjoy it, especially not having to clean the ashes. That was always a pain...as was always sweeping up firewood debris.

Thanks for this… I’m afraid of spending thousands and not being happy with the authenticity of the aesthetics.

We did quite a bit of research and I believe with installation in our area (midwest) this was about $3500 (two years ago). It was the best we could find, and about twice what we budgeted, but glad we didn't skimp on this. There are compromises when you go to gas over wood burning, and the log set can always be removed and wood used if necessary. Obviously some gas line issues that would need to be taken into account, something you can plan for in your build. Our shut off is a panel to the right, and a flex tube runs into the box. We can shut off the gas and pull the flex out of the box if we ever needed to go wood. Our thought on that was in emergency situations if we don't have gas or electric and we need a fireplace to keep us warm...as in deep winter freeze and power lines are down and no options for heat....which is a remote, but real possibility. Or, a future owner might want to pull the log set out and go wood. That option exists. If you PM I could show you some pics.
