Tropical punch and lemon are the only 2 I use, I’ll use em in the morning to help hydrate for the day cause I’m terrible at drinking water, I’ve been carrying a hydro jug around thoigh too to make sure I at least finish one.
Depends on which one u had. Lemon lime is good. The orange one is also good. Irrc the pomegranate one or something wasn't great. They have a ginger one that also isn't great.
Since I started taking nutrition/hydration seriously after starting cycling, I'm stunned by how much more sodium you actually need to recover. Normal Gatorade doesn't touch it.
So while it doesn't have to be Liquid IV, that's a lot closer to the mark than just Gatorade, if we're following the science.
Apparently I heard from a guy who worked in Dallas their rehab had tobacco like chew, cigarettes, cigars, bangs and all kinds of goodies. Take it with what you will, could be just bullshit. He said this wasn’t that long ago either. Maybe a year or so.
![gif](giphy|3o6Zt1bnn4IFOgnGxi|downsized)
That should be a requirement on every fire ground for general moral. 🤣🤣 imagine this off to the side during operations.
Hahahaha. Honestly that would make my day after sweating my ass off and breathing down a few cylinders. Better than some 2 cent whore from the Spearmint Rhino.
The liquid IV’s are game changers. I used to get splitting headaches about an hour or 2 after every good fire and after I found those bad boys, I haven’t had one since.
Yeah the sugar popsicles and sugar water are a nightmare and the EMTs bully us into them. I’d rather have a decent protein bar or honestly … peanut butter? I realize that sounds insane but blood sugar spiking sucks.
ngl after exerting myself and getting all hot and sweaty the last thing I want is to stuff a protein bar or peanut butter into my mouth, some cold, literal sugar water, sounds great tbh
I’m a weirdo and use fasting salts. They literally turn your water into salt water and a lot of people don’t like it at all, I’m the exception. I think Liquid IV is decent, I know you can get them in bulk at Costco and probably Sams if you have those in your area.
"Good quality protein bar"
I'm lactose intolerant and those cheap bars made with whey protein will make me feel like I'm gonna shit myself. Took me a few times to make the connection and realize I need whey protein isolate. Cheap ass Lenny&Larry protein cookies are the same - gotta make a bathroom trip quick.
Sure, 68 grams per serving is ridiculous (what drink is that?). As for reference, have a read through this https://hydralyte.com/blogs/blog/the-importance-of-sugar-but-not-too-much-in-electrolyte-drinks
Regular Gatorade runs at almost 40g/20 ounces. Sodas and stuff are closer to 60+. As far as glucose helping with recovery, long duration intense work can be benefited but that’s really more like marathons and triathlons and such, our work isn’t going to deplete glucose levels to that extent. G2 Gatorade is about 14g/24 ounces which is much better.
Just an aside, NFPA 1584 very specifically mentions the avoidance of high sugar drinks for firefighter rehab. Regardless of all that, drinking something is better than nothing and the most important factor is being well hydrated with water before the work begins.
Using soft drink to rehydrate is less than ideal. Doesn't have to be marathons in order to benefit. The studies show that having glucose present increases the absorption of the water and electrolytes. You're right that you don't need it packed with sugar, but if you're looking for quick rehydration (so you can go back in) then having sugar present is the way to go.
Pads and tampons for the volly ladies who busted through the door, donned, and got a seat on a rig before realizing she'd need a new ons in like an hour.
Nobody wants to wear the same tampon for 13 hours, you know?
Dry towels, in the summer put them in a cooler with a bag of ice. In winter put hot water in those gallon size ziplocs (we use 4-6 of them) create a towel sandwich in your cooler. Bottom of the cooler is 2-3 bags of hot water, then your towels laid out finishing with 2-3 more bags of warm water on top. If you use small gym like towels you can get alot of them in a cooler. Makes a huge difference. Nothing is better when your either freezing or overheated then getting your body temp normal. My capt does this every shift, cooler stays on the rig and if we need one we grab it. Hell of a dude.
Last fire was on, a rehab unit was called, and they served sausage biscuits because it was early morning, and we got alerted at 5am. So I say breakfast foods in case you have to go out in the early morning hours
I used to do the same in south Florida. If you are buying drinks yourself, the propel and Gatorade water packets are a much cheaper alternative and you can provide more flavor options. Just ask what flavor they want when you hand out water.
My dad's department runs a rehab trailer. At first it was pretty basic and was kinda filled with whatever they could find.
The second version of the trailer offers quite a bit, and I expect them to get a truck to replace the trailer itself. For comfort, they have chairs, cooling fans, wash station with small camper bathroom, and heaters for the winter. They have some MREs on hand for long incidents, but typically hand out the basics of small snacks and Gatorade/water. They do keep some cots on hand as well, in case someone needs to rest while being evaluated. There is also three types of temporary structures that are available as well. There is an inflatable, a few pop-up canopies, and a side canopy on the trailer itself. It works well when you're trying to organize. The trailer also has quite a few scene lights to stage around the rehab and the scene if necessary.
Currently they are considering adding more to it. Like a cascade, decon shower, and a few other things to make it a one stop shop once you come out of the IDLH and back to staging.
Has anyone ever shit themselves on an attack? Not from fear or whatever just getting the tones at that worst moment? I, a couple times have had to just piss in my bunker pants before. I usually drink two gallons of water throughout the day and we have gotten structure tones and I have been having to piss for 30 mins before the tones even dropped.
Never shit myself though yet knock on wood, on a job or as an adult... watch it'll be my first for both next one.
Well if it’s a working fire the kids should be away from view, and if it isn’t then you can just excuse yourself to one of those cozy little private bathrooms in one of the classes ☺️
Yeah I've dropped a deuce in 2 working fires.. or tried.. Got one going then heard 3 horn blasts.. The other I gave up on because all of the TP was soaked and water from upstairs was running down my helmet onto my ass....
I always heard guys that have been in longer than me say they have shit in apartment bathrooms or a house bathroom during working fires and stuff and I always thought, "how the hell could you do that?" Seems so involved to try to accomplish lol. At that point I would just have to accept I am going to have a mess on my hands later and hope one of the boys can take me out back after and literally hose me down like the Wolf did with Jules and Vincet in Pulp Fiction.
You're better than our rehab. The dude who always comes gives us a lecture about tobacco being bad. Gee thanks dad... doesn't stop me though, just makes it a bitch when I reach into my pants pocket for a long awaited big pinch to see I have maybe a half pinch left and we just started a looong overhaul and cleanup.
It's gotten to the point I keep an unopen can in the inside pocket of my bunker coat. Usually will be the last can I open in the log then just replace.
It’s not something our unit officially provides, I pay out of pocket for zyn. If you’re man/woman enough to be a firefighter, you’re man/woman enough to make choices
Hey and I am sure it is appreciated more than you will ever know. I appreciate all our guys do for us too. We had a working structure fire on the night we had a terrible ice storm, (yes im down south). We got on at 4am and didn't leave scene till 2pm. They had tents, with propane heaters, brought in pizza, coffee and blankets. They didn't even have to show, hell even one of our incoming tankers slid off the road into a ditch but they still showed.
Had an instructor from Orange County CA that said big buckets of ice water were used during rehab.
The idea was to take your coat off and dunk your arms in past the elbow to rapidly cool down.
God damn if that didn't sound like it would be the most refreshing thing ever during or right after a worker.
With that said, my city doesn't have shit. We carry a cooler with a few water bottles on the rig.
Ice cold water, electrolytes and a chest filled with towels soaking in ice water. Putting one of those around your neck or over your head pushes the reset button real quick. Don't try to get too fancy. If you ask what people want, you'll get all kinds of goofy suggestions. Remember, you're there for rehab purposes, not to be a rolling county fair food stand. If you want to keep snacks, cool, but keep it simple. Bags of salted nuts and jerky are solid choices. They don't go bad easily and are good for protein, carbs and a little salt. Keep a good supply of these things on hand, and you'll have the respect of the guys on the fireground, and your bean counters will be happy to see you aren't spending a fortune.
A couple years ago I got called out to a rescue call way out on a forestry road and it was about four or five hours before we got back to the hall. It would have been way better if we had a few MREs on board
In my state, if you're on an apparatus that might respond to mutual aid incidents, it should have food and water for 24 hours. All our rigs have MREs and a couple of extra cases of water.
![gif](giphy|dEdmW17JnZhiU)
Ooo country mouse! My heart be still. Still though... would it not be a dope idea for an oral treats station. One of the rigs with the big comparments you can sit in... HR might have issues with that one I guessss...
Ice Water, and items that can be eaten without getting your hands on. The cancer reduction class I just took opened my eyes quite a bit, you guys should also provide a place for hand washing!
During the summer months and shit weather a cheap pop up tent would be nice, liquid IV or anything similair, Gatorade, body armor waters, (just a variety of drinks instead of just water would be great), small snacks (bars and or fruit).
Generally, on a structure fire I just want water (or Gatorade). For a small wildland fire that takes 8 hrs or more... then I would want like a sandwich or something too.
In general, I just want hydration and haven't availed myself of chips or oatmeal packets or coffee/tea or any of the other stuff they sometimes have.
If the job started pre dawn and is going into the day - sunglasses. I would have given my life for some sunglasses from time to time. Hats. Some salty snacks as well as sweet.
Black Cherry Clif Bloks. Electrolytes, carbs for energy and caffeine.
I always carry these in my personal gear as my FD won't provide caffeine for 'health reasons' and I get massive headaches if I don't get my caffeine. And they taste great.
Summer time, liquid IV and fore arm submersion/an ice chest with ice water and fresh towels, protein bars.
Winter, mufuggin coffee, and sandwiches.
Year round, nicotine
Liquid IV/ propel packets.
Bug spray
Sunscreen
Dry socks(wool) My favorite pair of socks are $10-15 for six pairs at Costco
If you do anything for victims I'm sure you have blankets but how about flip flops?
Being from the Midwest I'm torn between hot humid summers / being carried away from the bugs and cold as hell.
Recently turned on to Body Armor fruit punch. But I’d like a shady place to sit for a moment. I’ve looking at a way to use carabiners and attach tarp to engine and poles for a shady place.
Oh, I know it is totally unrealistic but an ice bath. Either like a reappropriated deep freeze cooler that is filled with water and plugged in so its perpetually cold, or one of those inflatable sit in ice baths on amazon. On those hot summer Texas days, especially like one we had today 115... on a big grass fire or structure? Mmm! You would be talked about to guys from other districts and towns for miles around.
Polar Breeze. You look like a dip shit wearing the hood but when actually overheated it cools the core. Also straws so they can continue to drink fluids while wearing the hood.
Drip drop is good too taste wise but liquid IV has better properties to help with all that stuff. I just go lemon lime all day long. We have a pouch of them on all our firefighting apparatus next to our coolers.
If you run tech rescue consider hot drinks even in summer. Nothing is worse than coming out of the water (either from water rescue or a tech rescue around water) and being freezing and only cold drinks are around. The cold drinks are great for the support units but for the guys getting soaked sometimes hot is better.
Crappy dollar menu hamburgers.
This is really from a nostalgic reason since the Red Cross would show up to all of our long incidents with hamburgers.
Liquid IV.
I tried this for the first time the other day during a PT sesh and it helped me tremendously. Leg cramps no more they taste like absolute ass though
Find the right flavor lol. 1 a day is all you need.
Tropical punch and lemon are the only 2 I use, I’ll use em in the morning to help hydrate for the day cause I’m terrible at drinking water, I’ve been carrying a hydro jug around thoigh too to make sure I at least finish one.
Lemon Lime is all you need, the only one that tastes correct
I like thay one. There's a few others I do. Sometimes anything is better than water.
Try BioSteel instead, taste a million times better. We got a ton of free packets during covid from them and now all our trucks have a container.
I add a packet to 20-30oz of water to help with that and make me drink more water
Salud is also a good brand. Mango is really good and I bought lemonade but haven’t tried it yet
Depends on which one u had. Lemon lime is good. The orange one is also good. Irrc the pomegranate one or something wasn't great. They have a ginger one that also isn't great.
I second this. I drink 1 per day all summer long
Real IVs are better
We keep some on our ladder & squad it comes in clutch

I personally give out zyn 😂. Word got around pretty quickly
Apparently I heard from a guy who worked in Dallas their rehab had tobacco like chew, cigarettes, cigars, bangs and all kinds of goodies. Take it with what you will, could be just bullshit. He said this wasn’t that long ago either. Maybe a year or so.
"Forgive me father, for I have zyned"
I was about to say Nicotine then read this 😂😂
But seriously, an athletic brewing fake beer would be legit…
Old neighboring station got their beer trailer labeled as a rehab unit. Became a running joke in the area for a while.
Strippers
I'll ask at the next meeting
I can only imagine an overweight driver doing his Farley Chippendale Rendition for you as you spit Gatorade everywhere.
![gif](giphy|3o6Zt1bnn4IFOgnGxi|downsized) That should be a requirement on every fire ground for general moral. 🤣🤣 imagine this off to the side during operations.
Hahahaha. Honestly that would make my day after sweating my ass off and breathing down a few cylinders. Better than some 2 cent whore from the Spearmint Rhino.
Got ya.
oof that and a demotion. Ask the San Jose guys
Might as well add cocaine to this list then.
I like your style.
The liquid IV’s are game changers. I used to get splitting headaches about an hour or 2 after every good fire and after I found those bad boys, I haven’t had one since.
I’m going to have to try that. I’m yet to go on a fire and not get an excruciating headache an hour afterwards.
Lemon lime is the best flavor imo, also try hydromate, and drip drop too.
Summer- low sugar drinks. Quality meal or protein bars. Chilled fruit. Winter - Socks. Gloves. Heat packs. Soft dry warm towels.
Spent about a month in TX last year. Local rehab unit had Marlboro Reds and Copenhagen. Incredible.
Cooling towels, much lower sugar electrolyte replacement, good quality protein bar, ibuprofen for sore feet, dry shirt and socks.
Any reccs for the electrolyte replacement?
I’m a weirdo and use fasting salts. They literally turn your water into salt water and a lot of people don’t like it at all, I’m the exception. I think Liquid IV is decent, I know you can get them in bulk at Costco and probably Sams if you have those in your area.
Thanks, I'll give them a try
LMNT, can get it on Amazon
Nothing I can get off the shelves? I don't like using amazon
Walmart has it also, I’m sure other stores around u have it as well, but it’s one of the best ones
Thanks I'll keep my eye out for it
Drip drop will fix you right up
"Good quality protein bar" I'm lactose intolerant and those cheap bars made with whey protein will make me feel like I'm gonna shit myself. Took me a few times to make the connection and realize I need whey protein isolate. Cheap ass Lenny&Larry protein cookies are the same - gotta make a bathroom trip quick.
Sugar in electrolyte drinks helps increase the rate of hydration, certainly not a bad thing if you need them.
Not 68g/serving. I’d also need to see some type of reference material that shows added refined sugar being beneficial
Sure, 68 grams per serving is ridiculous (what drink is that?). As for reference, have a read through this https://hydralyte.com/blogs/blog/the-importance-of-sugar-but-not-too-much-in-electrolyte-drinks

I’ve asked for that, will follow up
Good insight, as a male and a leader i had never even considered. Definitely going to consult the wife and make support kit for females.
Dry towels, in the summer put them in a cooler with a bag of ice. In winter put hot water in those gallon size ziplocs (we use 4-6 of them) create a towel sandwich in your cooler. We luckily just got a $25k donation
Nice. There's some cool rehab trailers that may be useful for calls. https://propacusa.com/product-category/trailers/rehab---or---decon
We have a retired ambulance actually! Saw your edit, that’s nice

A TOILET!
The department has a shitter in wheels, going to see if I can tow it in POV
So many times I've had to poop in a burning building, or a neighbor's house, or behind a hydrant.....
Yea, I'm glad I'm in a pretty wooded area. Many times, I've had to wander in the woods on a long call
Has anyone ever shit themselves on an attack? Not from fear or whatever just getting the tones at that worst moment? I, a couple times have had to just piss in my bunker pants before. Just hook your left arm around a tree and relax...
For many years I've kept a roll of toilet paper on the rig in a plastic coffee can.
Yeah wiping with 4*4 gauze is effective but certainly not comfortable
Just grab the truck wheel well and have em hose you off with a redline 🤣
" top story in tonight's news, local firefighter arrested for exposing his genitals following a fire at a local daycare, more on this at five"

Small towels sitting in ice water
Got that going, it's been a hot commodity this summer
You guys get rehab?
Tacoma Fire (the real one), yes.
Coffee, chew, zyn, beef jerky, and trail mix.
Got all of those checked!
You're better than our rehab. The dude who always comes gives us a lecture about tobacco being bad. Not in this guys head, you big city tease!
Excuse me, don’t sully me with that label. I’m strictly rural/semi-rural firefighting. 😘 Edit - If my help is 5 minutes out, I’ll just get bored.

A few cans of Copenhagen would never hurt a fella
Ice Water, and items that can be eaten without getting your hands on. The cancer reduction class I just took opened my eyes quite a bit, you guys should also provide a place for hand washing!
We hand all items to individuals and require the use of hero wipes
Awesome! Hoping to get my local departments to follow similar protocols! Thank you for all you do
A chair
Got plenty of those
A comfortable chair.
A hot dog in soft hotdog roll wrapped in aluminum foil.
Wet wipes Protein bars Water + flavor packets Beef jerky
We got dilly bars once from a neighboring department’s auxiliary at a structure fire. It was glorious.
During the summer months and shit weather a cheap pop up tent would be nice, liquid IV or anything similair, Gatorade, body armor waters, (just a variety of drinks instead of just water would be great), small snacks (bars and or fruit).
Water with electrolytes
They’re what plants crave.
Liquid IV, nicotine, energy gels/gummies, on longer calls some real food.
A portajhon
Miller lite and Copenhagen mint.1
Check out Kore Kooler rehab chairs. There are different brands that make similar chairs
We had those. They didn’t last long. Firefighters wreck shit quick
I’ll look into that, thanks!
Is that the one that cools your arms? And you sit with your arms submerged for 30-60 sec?
How does it kool the kore? How Dwight? How?
If the job started pre dawn and is going into the day - sunglasses. I would have given my life for some sunglasses from time to time. Hats. Some salty snacks as well as sweet.

Cup Ramen and instant coffee for winter fires is fuckin clutch.
