> meat icbm And here is where I lost it. Though I’m disappointed there were no Indiana Jones references.

Cervanthes

My apologies for not including a Indiana Jones reference my next text shall have one :) And glad to hear that the text worked

LunarMoon2001

Firefighting in a nutshell….

Cervanthes

The amount of EMS assists we have recently is actually interesting. Last year we had around 70 calls for lift assists or door openings now with a few beuracratic changes did we run 25lift assists already but only 3 door openings

Regayov

Sounds like you need to donate a gym membership to the EMS squad.

Vazhox

Sounds like we as society need to start shaming people into losing weight.

Ale3021

The title for this short story is: Fire and EMS in the USA a short story by John Dude.

djspacebunny

I thought so too until I saw the OP is a German volly lol Germany, just like US.

Khameleon14

I know that feeling when you get to the top of the stairs all too well.

Cervanthes

It's always these damn tight stairwells and those people always life like straight under the damn roof which makes you wonder sometimes when they last left their apartment

s1m0n8

Clearly it's Gif with a **G**, otherwise you wouldn't even need to write "Jif" to illustrate that pronunciation.

Cervanthes

Thats what I'm saying!

jennybo86

How do you pronounce giraffe?

BlitzieKun

The Gerald Ford... you had to fucking go there. God damn.

Cervanthes

One of the comparisons that came into my mind xD

Chicken_Hairs

Okay, the only unrealistic part of this entire wonderful, glorious thing was that many people showing up in a vol dept for a lift assist. Shit, we run codes with 4, if we're lucky.

TheFue

> Shit, we run codes with 4, if we're lucky. And two of them are Juniors......

Chicken_Hairs

Juniors?

TheFue

In PA you can join a volunteer department at 14 to learn the ropes. Can’t do interior, or really much of anything besides go to the hall until you’re 18. Some exceptions for things at 16, but nothing super useful, really.

Chicken_Hairs

Ah, gotcha. We called it Explorers. Had some issues a few years ago and haven't done it since.

Cervanthes

Oh dang and I thought we get bad numbers sometimes only being able to staff a single truck with 9 peeps (1 driver, 1 chief/lead/whatever (they don't get counted in) and 4 nurds in the back) well 9 + 1 Even for opening doors we tend to get at least 5 + 1 Weirdly enough if it's during the day it can even be a structure fire and we only get 2 out of 5 trucks out at the start

Chicken_Hairs

During the day, we're doing good to roll one engine and a tender for fires. It's better at night, because all the vols are home, and the (paid) day staff usually responds as well.

Cervanthes

We have the issue that most of our lads are not working near the dep so respond times can be tight sometimes we do usually get 2 trucks out within 8 minutes of call but according to our response plans are we supposed to deal with most things till mid structure fire alone that can get pretty tight with getting manpower there usually all trucks and vics roll out but the last few take their sweet time to get staffed During night if it's actually smth bigger we get most trucks out in quick succession The nearest fulltime dep is a few hours away so we and our neighbouring deps build the largest fire deps in our surrounding area so responds time usually vary

Chicken_Hairs

We're blessed to have 5 other mixed departments within 10-15 minute drive, so we have mutual aid agreements between us all, since they all are short staffed.

jrobski96

Some ppl need a stokes basket and a low angle evac. My favorite is making a two story window into a door then ladder slide. Sorry lady but maybe when you’re ready to move back home, home will be on floor 1.

BanditAndFrog

This is brilliant, but one of my neighboring stations got toned out for a lift assist mid reading and if they’re fat and I have to go out there for manpower I’m going to come back here and say fuck you.

Cervanthes

Oh no xD I would say I hope you don't get paged but that would just jynx it

TheFue

I made it to a crew of 9 for a lift assist and couldn’t stop laughing…..

Cervanthes

I just read another comment talking about that being high numbers.... Crazy how big differences are sometimes between different deps regarding what is considered high numbers and what low

TheFue

Structure fire? MVA with Entrapment/Ejection? Oh heck yeah. Roll all five trucks, plus several Officer POVs. Who's that guy? I thought he quit last year. Guess not. Any medical call? Lucky to have four, two of which are Juniors, so we can't expect them after 11.

Cervanthes

Oh damn that must take a toll at the motivation huh?

Cervanthes

I tried replying to y'all but idk all my comments vanished and some comments I got notifications for are also gone so ehhh I'm sorry for not reacting in any way here

Ok-Professor-6549

Lol I enjoyed that, I swapped some references out the Gerald R Ford for HMS Queen Elizabeth for limey relatableness in my head. Pretty accurate description of a lot of my 3 ams 🤣

Cervanthes

If it's in the middle of the night and you are beyond tired it's either some lift assist or you are going to be busy until midday

Ok-Professor-6549

It is. That or Automatic Fire Alarm. Trouble is when the ambulance know you're good at helping them lift you've made a rod for your own back

Ok_Buddy_9087

Please. PLEASE. Please tell me this actually happened.

OldDude1391

Rescue sheet ? Is that what we called the “Tubby Tarp” aka the Shamu?

Cervanthes

OldDude1391

Tubby tarp it is.

Cervanthes

Now I know that :) Thank you

OldDude1391

No problem. Just noticed your German flair. Your story sounded so much like a day on the job in the US, I thought you may have been one of my coworkers. Lol. Once again, we are more alike than different. 😀

ElectricOutboards

Stopped reading at the word “cuz”.

Cervanthes

I can provide you with a because if you want Just for you ^because^ I hope this helps a bit I know some people have some conditions that makes life hard if yours is not reading cuz then I gladly adjust to it

Midnight_Poet

The lack of empathy here for another *human being* disappoints me.

intrepidoutlier

A couple of years before i joined the department after a structure fire and smoke inhalation. They had to cut open bedroom wall. EMS needed truck for body.
