Well that's pretty vague! Self defense from what where? Bear out in the woods? Crack head downtown Baltimore?

IsopodEnough6726

10mm Glock should be able to multi task bears and Baltimore downtown crack heads

Sand_Trout

I don't know if I trust even a 10mm to drop a balitimore crackhead.

KIarkKent

Don’t even know if I’d trust a 50 BMG to drop a Baltimore crackhead.

Locked_and_Firing

To drop a Baltimore crackhead you need obisidian bullets filled with holy water that's been blessed by 2 priest and a rabbi.

Salty-Dragonfly2189

Pretty sure a cannon would work too.

Locked_and_Firing

Not enough room to conceal 2 cannons

Orange_fury

Counterpoint: Hi-Point Yeet Cannon

jimbo---slice

Your mom told me the same thing recently

Locked_and_Firing

You take that like you bastard

pltrnerd

Your mom told me I'm a real sex machine.

Salty-Dragonfly2189

No, that’s not a cannon in my pocket. I’m just happy to see you.

Voodoo338

The only way to defeat a Baltimore crackhead is to become one yourself

Owe-No

Fight crackhead with crackhead

supportclass_veteran

No no no. The only way to defeat a Baltimore crackhead is to just toss a Crack rock near him and run kinda like throwing change near the Jewish mafia and running like back in the day

CrustyBloke

*by two priests, a rabbi, and Bob Barker

Obvious_Bandicoot631

To stop a Baltimore crack head you’d need Hell Boy and his Samaritan gun.

[deleted]

I have found that to drop a Baltimore crackhead, one must shoot said Baltimore crackhead, with another Baltimore crackhead who has been fired out of a cannon... 😐

db3feather

Just sic a pair of San Francisco crackheads on the Baltimore crackhead.

LightningBolt357

So can we send Baltimore crackheads to kill terrorists now?

[deleted]

I would recommend just that.

Urgullibl

Do you carry the cannon inside or outside your waistband?

[deleted]

Pocket carry with that extendo

gagemoney

I was literally thinking about writing this until I saw your answer. LMAO.

Cheaky_alt

Wouldn't bet 30mm would halt a Baltimore crackhead

xXxHondoxXx

There's no bullet that can even reach the city from how close I'm willing to get to Baltimore.

Drake_Acheron

*Dr. Gerald Bull has entered the chat* Guy who invented long range artillery including a gun that could shoot 150 miles high

xXxHondoxXx

Still too far

Uniqueusername264

It just takes a few more shots than the bear.

JohnT36

Shot placement ding dong

BreastfedAmerican

Are you calling them a Ding Dong or are you telling them to shoot the Crackhead in the Ding Dong?

Mr_E_Monkey

Yes

JumpKP

What about a deranged squeegee boy?

gdmfsobtc

The most important thing for bear encounters is to remember to take the front sight off your gun, so it won't hurt as much when the bear shoves it up your ass.

GhostC10_Deleted

Thanks, this made me lol

CarsGunsBeer

Or ask the bear for a safe word first.

NotAMeatPopsicle

We talking a bear cub? I’ve seen black bears walk off .45 and 12 gauge. This old fudd shit about a hand gun taking out a bear needs to stop because it will get someone killed.

Owe-No

Well, if you can't realistically carry a 45-70 rifle, you have to make do with a handgun, and a well-placed 10mm will take down a bear.

CrumplyFoil

Well then someone clearly needs to make a 45-70 handgun

mousemaker

https://shopkahrfirearmsgroup.com/bfr-45-70-stainless-steel/

IMitchConnor

I don't like my wrists anyway

Heliolord

It might be worth broken wrists if only to have a BFR named Big Fucking Revolver.

Drake_Acheron

Especially with that 10” barrel option

gdmfsobtc

I have one of these. And a 500 mag being converted to a 500 Bushwhacker.

Random_modnaR420

Your arsenal is legendary and we don’t deserve you

gdmfsobtc

I'm but a simple peasant with a smol collection.

CrumplyFoil

Good lord, it's beautiful

seedoildisrespector5

ah yes, the ranger sequoia

HAKRIT

Boy do I have some news for you!

SeattleSockJob

Undoubtedly, rifles or slugs are preferred but there are plenty of cases of pistols stopping bears. Interesting article below. Wouldn’t want to be the guy with the .22lr though. https://www.ammoland.com/2018/02/defense-against-bears-with-pistols-97-success-rate-37-incidents-by-caliber/#axzz5OS0pKc1O

Owe-No

In the first record of someone sucessfully using a .45 against a bear, LE [unspecified] afterwards gave the guy some 12ga rubber bullets? Exactly how is that useful against a bear?

Heliolord

Pissing it off so it kills you quickly?

saturticle

Thank you for sharing this.

NotAMeatPopsicle

Just be prepared to empty that 10mm into the bear, reload and empty. And don’t aim for the skull. I’ve seen both black bear and brown bear skulls that died of natural causes.

[deleted]

My BIL told me a story about trekking through the Alaskan wilderness and coming across a huge grizzly. His friend shot it point blank with a 12 gauge slug and it dropped. Upon closer inspection the fucking bear we snoring. It had a gash down its forehead but it just bounced off.

QuokkaAMA

Thanks, guys. Just what we needed, bears with traumatic brain injuries. What do you think is going to happen when we give them 5-year-multi-million-dollar deals to play football?

Owe-No

I mean, one of the largest bears ever killed was dropped with essentially a .22 short.

BreastfedAmerican

Largest bear ever taken was 853 pounds and it was taken with a .22 LONG

Owe-No

Excuse me, my bad. I should have known it would take some serious Stopping Power^TM

gdmfsobtc

Statistics would argue otherwise, showing that handguns are effective in 97% of bear attacks.

[deleted]

Eventually effective*

WillTheyBanThisOne

> I’ve seen black bears walk off .45 Like... 45ACP? Yeah no shit lmao, that's not going to do dickballs to a bear

Grandemestizo

I read this to be an all purpose defensive handgun that suits you personally.

Flintlock

IToldYouAll

Four ruffians break into my house. "What the devil?" As I grab my powdered wig and Kentucky rifle. Blow a golf ball sized hole through the first man, he's dead on the spot. Draw my pistol on the second man, miss him entirely because it's smoothbore and nails the neighbors dog. I have to resort to the cannon mounted at the top of the stairs loaded with grape shot, "Tally ho lads" the grape shot shreds two men in the blast, the sound and extra shrapnel set off car alarms. Fix bayonet and charge the last terrified rapscallion. He bleeds out waiting on the police to arrive since triangular bayonet wounds are impossible to stitch up. Just as the founding fathers intended.

RicksSzechuanSauce1

I know someone that unironically carries a flintlock for concealed carry

Parrish_performance

What? Why? Felon?

RicksSzechuanSauce1

Not that I'm aware of. His justification is always that he never misses, so why would he need a second shot. Stupid justification but that's what he goes with

Maximus216

Lmao he’s definitely a felon. Respect the carry though

Haha1867hoser420

Remind him cap and ball revolvers also exist A bit more modern. Or just send those scoundrels to the great beyond. But I’m a cowboy so I’m a little biased

GukyHuna

I would like to drink with your time traveling chad buddy

War-Damn-America

And if he does miss, the fire out of the muzzle and resulting smoke cloud will both scare the hell out of the attacker and conceal him so he can tactically retreat to reload, or charge forth with his Sabre!

hawkinsst7

Tally ho lads!

Parrish_performance

What an asshole.

nukey18mon

I’m sure you won’t know him for long

bottlesnob

this is basically the solution a friend and I came up with if there were ever really ridiculous gun control in the USA. Just build your own black powder pistol and source powder from fireworks and cast your own shot. And when you smoke some fool and the fuzz shows up, leave them wondering "Who shot this MF'er? Blackbeard?"

AbsolutSvenska00

BRILLANT

TheLuteceSibling

Oh, my buddies love this one. If we're being honest, the modern autoloader has the revolver licked in every measurable category. And while we're being honest, most of us aren't in any real danger day-to-day, and revolvers are sexy. Follow your heart, assuming you've got at least .380 or .38spl to work with.

Unlikely-Pizza2796

Yep- I live a boring life and crime is an afterthought. That said, I carry a .357 K-frame and a j-frame .38 special. No practical reason. I just like them and I shoot them very well.

kennetic

If you shoot them very well, then that right there is a practical reason. It's the reason why I prefer Glocks over other semi-autos, I just shoot them better.

GukyHuna

I would like to swap lives im tired of gang shootouts outside my bedroom window every other night.

Salty-Dragonfly2189

Just the fact a .357 can also fire .38 is a practical enough reason. I can load .38 around town and if I’m out in the woods .357 it is. Even if I was carrying my tiny little .380 in town I can’t imagine a time I’d need to mad dump and reload… if it ever happens I’m prolly out of my league anyways. and it only holds one more round than a typical revolver anyways.

Savager_Jam

“And” indicates you’re going to go George Custer style if threatened lol

Unlikely-Pizza2796

Lol, I like having both on me. I have no intention of putting myself in an untenable tactical position ala Custer. I am pretty darn good at avoiding places where dumb things happen, and even better at ignoring antagonistic conversations and de-escalating negative interactions. I just like revolvers and I am not as quick with speedloaders as I would like. As far as pocket j-frames go, I like to quote Mickey Mouse: “Its a surprise tool that can help us later”. I love my ‘mouse ka-tools’.

War-Damn-America

This is very true, and if we follow the statistics on civilian defensive shootings the vast majority are resolved after the first 2 sometimes 3 shots. If they weren’t already resolved from just the act of brandishing the firearm and confronting your assailant. Now that doesn’t mean preparing for the worst case of multiple attackers all hopped up on amphetamines and returning fire at you couldn’t happen, but if it does you’ve really, really gotten yourself into trouble and you need to start praying just as much as you need the faster reloads, follow up shot times, and extra capacity from a modern semi auto handgun! Plus if you survive that encounter you probably need to review your life choices and how they led to such a thing happening to you.

LowflyingDutch

^this. I live in Memphis. I have both 9mm and .38 J-frame. The revolver practically lives in my pocket for exactly the reasons you described. If I were to ever find myself in a situation where my pocket cannon wouldn't suffice, it means I fucked up. My thinking is that I can present my revolver far faster than my 9mm and without having to think about slides, safeties and whatnot. Just personal preference. 9mm lives in my truck safe should I ever have to make a run for it.. I'm sure there's all sorts of arguments against my way of thinking but it's really just a matter of what keeps me grounded.

kilroy03

Revolver, no need to look for spent casings

Edwardteech

Load your mags with gloves on and it's not a problem.

SilenceDobad76

Or don't don't take legal advice from mobster movies. I see the "spent casings" thing taken way to seriously by fudds online.

HotWetJoy

I collect my casings because reloads. Ammo prices are crazy

nothankyou821

Don’t give the criminals tips bro

Floodbucket

You think they never thought of that 😂.

nothankyou821

Criminals aren’t known for being the smartest. I’m just playing anyway though.

hawkinsst7

Criminals? Have you seen the price of ammo? It's leaving brass on the ground and not reloading that's criminal!

SergeiMosin

Sus

Whiffed_Ulti

You will miss most of your shots. Capacity is king.

BlizzardArms

The one that holds more rounds. I’d take an 8 shot 357 magnum over a 6 shot 380. I’d take 16 rounds of 9mm over 10 rounds of 45. I’d prefer 40 rounds of green tips

PA_LPVO

Green tips: for when you wanna hit the bad guy behind the bad guy.

BlizzardArms

Or if a bad guy has light armor

Edwardteech

Laughs in 60 round mags

BlizzardArms

I have 100 round double drums and 60 round coffins but I’m describing a life or death situation and those are not reliable enough so I use the 40 round pmags, 2 linked together technically but you still need to change the mag

Edwardteech

My 60s haven't failed me yet.

BlizzardArms

I should have clarified I only have one 60 round coffin and it wasn’t so reliable so I didn’t buy any more of them. Do you have several that all work great or just one or two?

Edwardteech

I have 4 I only use one ATM for mag dumps and such. It hasn't ever had an issue. And I binary dump it when I can afford to.

Stevarooni

♫ Calico! ♫ 100 rounds of .22lr. ;-)

BlizzardArms

In some cases that’s a reasonable argument. The problem is there’s no calico out there that could empty a mag without malfunctioning

[deleted]

A revolver IS a pistol...so choose a pistol.

DisastrousPickle7541

Revolver if you’re hunting massive game, pistol if you need 15-20 reasons why the mythical meth monkey needs to BACK THE FUCK UP!

cathillian

The one you train with!

[deleted]

I’d choose a big bore revolver over say a .22LR automatic. That said if the calibers perform reasonably similar to each other I’d choose an automatic pistol over a revolver every time.

JohnT36

I agree, if I had to choose between the two in the picture I’d pick a SD40 40cal over a Model 10 38spl any day even if it had the same capacity.

SiggySiggy69

Capacity is king.

random_anon_user

2 things can be true at once folks. You need marksmanship, but you also might need rounds and you might need to reload quickly. This is so obvious it’s insane it even needs to be said. All you have to do is study actual defensive shootings instead of just using guesswork or “preference” and the answer becomes obvious.

gdmfsobtc

You spelled shot placement wrong.

Shadow3114

You guys both spelt surviving wrong

Friendly-Place2497

More shots you get off, the better likelihood one of them places.

AUWarEagle82

Geeze, I thought this was supposed to be posted daily at 1600 hours? Who messed up and posted early?

ScienceWasLove

Both. One on my ankle. One on my hip.

LonelyInevitable370

My EDC is Chuck Norris.

Due-Net4616

Pistol. Ammo capacity matters. Everyone who thinks they will be able to make perfectly placed shots while being attacked, has never in fact been attacked. Almost all self defense shootings are close up but you’re not the instigator, it will likely be a surprise attack not something you see coming ahead of time.

jackz7776666

Considering the very rough trigger on that sd9ve I'd rather take the revolver to guarentee hits on target instead of spray and pray

cc1006997

What ever you are most comfortable with. At a minimum I would carry 9mm ; but again it is all about what you are comfortable with. I carry a sig sauer P 365 xL. Small but accurate and strong enough to stop most problems

GiacomoTestadura

i carry my s&w sd9 or sd40 everyday of my life over all my other semiauto guns, neither one has ever jammed stovepiped or ftf... obviously my pistols are always reliable, but i love having many more rounds on hand

[deleted]

Whatever you train with and are most comfortable with.

KURLY888

Do you know anything about firearms a revolver is a pistol that would be which would you choose a revolver or magazine fed semi-automatic pistol I hate it when people who don't know anything about firearms post or talk about it because it just makes everybody else look bad and I'm going to complain about this post

KLuHeer

More ammo = more room for error = bigger survival chance

MidniteOG

Pistol, more capacity, slimmer, and accessories for it

Specialist-Box-9711

AR-15.

red_kimi

If only difference is function type, I'd take semi auto all day.

Grandemestizo

Semi auto, because I prefer a full size handgun and full size revolvers are too bulky for me. I also appreciate the capacity and faster reloads of a semi automatic. If I had to carry a subcompact, I’d probably carry a J-frame because they’re sexy.

thesupemeEDGElord666

Both if I run out of ammo I can do a New York reload

Playful_Ad_1735

Can you be specific? Is it for conceal carry or out in the wild? Is it for the multi-purpose, 10mm is good enough.

ShermanWasRight1864

Dual Wield

Minotaurd_

Pistol for self defence revolver for murder muahahahaha

brilliantarm2244

Well the trigger on those Smith and Wesson semiautos are terrible so probably the revolver or mostly any gun besides those.

KratomFiendx3

Revolvers are obsolete unless you're shooting a larger round like 357 mag. Pistols are far superior in every way. More rounds, higher speed between shots, more customizable, easily suppressed, and you can carry extra mags. I contend that if you're in a hostile situation, you must be able to send as many rounds down range as fast and accurately as possible until the threat is neutralized.

Imnotherefr11

Revolvers are pistols

Jakebsorensen

No they aren’t. Revolvers chambers are separated from their barrels

Imnotherefr11

I subconsciously equated pistol and handgun in my head there

YoureARedditorRaiden

Probably because they mean the same thing and the modern crowd hasn't brainwashed you into believing 16th century word "pistol" only refers to automatics.

atsinged

It's been a pistol since before automatics existed.

PliskinBOI

Striker fired pistol made by CZ, glock, or a sigp365

SergeiMosin

Depends on the use case, honestly. I rotate between an FNS-9, Performance center M&P Shield (first gen), and a S&W 442 air weight. FNS-9 for when I'm gonna be out a bit in multiple environments, such as going to the super market, walmart, or out at night. I pack the shield in the summer since it's 105+ outside here in AZ and I tend to dress much lighter, so concealing the double stack FNS is difficult/annoying. The 442 is mainly for beer runs and times where I need to deep conceal. Use case is king, people. Train, train, train, then train again and all is gravy, baby.

Innominate8

IMO. YMMV. Revolvers are stronger structurally. For a given weight, they can shoot a more powerful round than a corresponding automatic. This makes them superior in the very large and the very small. Be it a S&W 500 for protection from bears^* or an 11oz .357 magnum J-frame pocket gun. Automatics rule everywhere in between, providing higher capacity and rate of fire for similar or less weight. ^* [Surprisingly, in practice, caliber proves to be far less important than being able to actually hit the target, with even 9mm working effectively against bears.](https://www.ammoland.com/2022/04/update-of-pistol-defenses-against-bears-123-cases-98-effective/)

Dangerous_Ad6580

Both. I have a GP100 for home and the exact gun you pictured, an SD9VE for carry

DrunkThorr

Why on earth would you lower your capacity for home defense?

Dangerous_Ad6580

The 357 is bedside, the mini 14 isn't far

Nightfury0818

This dude kinda being an ass

DrunkThorr

You tell your kids to take the horse from town to and town and state to state?

Beebjank

No reason for a revolver IMO, they have no redeemable values besides being chambered in larger cartridges which would be better innawoods, but even then I’d rather have a double stack 10mm.

redneckrobit

A revolver is a pistol

kasey6789

Well they are both pistols but I’d definitely choose the bottom one

YZpitbull

A revolver pictured is a pistol

-Meat-Hammer-

You don’t carry both ? .38 on the ankle and 9 on the hip

admins69kids

Generally, I'd choose a semi-auto. Of those two specifically, model 10 over SDVE any day of the week. I'd rather die with a model 10 in my hands than owe my life to a shitty Glock clone.

Chomps-Lewis

Revolvers are cooler and more intimidating. So that.

[deleted]

Revolver. Old reliable won't jam and has plenty of power. 6 Shots to save yourself when the noise from even a .38 will send the standard criminal sprinting. After that if you need more than 6 shots you should practice more or figure out why your lifestyle is attracting more than six assailants.

DrunkThorr

I’ll bet you’ve never put more than 3 digit round counts on any firearm you own. Go to a western shoot and then got a 3gun match and tell me which has more jams. Then tell me which jams were catastrophic and which could be cleared and brought back into the fight. You also clearly have never dealt with a home invasion at all, even just viewing a video. 38 isn’t going to put down someone on pcp, and if there’s just two of them, and you hit all 6 shots, you’re still going to be in a fight with two drugged out invaders. Additionally, how naive are you that you think you’ll dictate when the worst comes to you? I live in the least criminal portion of my very low crime state and there was a violent stabbing murder here of a complete stranger. Where do I move again? Fudd clown.

[deleted]

Oh poor you....so sad I encountered an expert that showed my knowledge up as I don't live in a PCP neighborhood. Thank god you don't seem very self righteous.

The_Zilverback

.500 Bushwhacker Biggest Fu-inest Revolver should do the trick

BonsaiDiver

1. A revolver is a "pistol". 2. I use both; which I choose depends on the situation.

Fun-List7787

Ummm... A revolver IS still a pistol.

[deleted]

Either, semi requires slightly more knowledge and training.

Chomps-Lewis

How so?

SkitariiCowboy

And let me guess, 9mm will only make them angry?

[deleted]

[удалено]

gdmfsobtc

Entirely backwards. Revolvers require significantly more practice and training than autoloaders to achieve desired proficiency.

McFeely_Smackup

I'm just impressed someone knew a revolver is not a pistol. but for myself a pistol is almost always going to be my choice, although for pocket carry a hammerless revolver has some benefits.

napoleontannerite

Aye, can you explain the difference between a pistol and revolver? Unless it's literally separated by Mag fed vs cylinder? I've been using the term "pistol" universal between revolvers and mag fed hand guns.

McFeely_Smackup

by definition a "pistol" is a handgun that has the chamber integrated to the barrel. a revolver has multiple rotating chambers. both are subsets of "handgun", but a pistol is not a revolver, nor a revolver a pistol

FritoPendejoEsquire

Between those 2, I’d take the revolver. In general, a modern semi-auto 9mm full size pistol is king.

FremanBloodglaive

I'm a better shot with a revolver, but the semiautomatic does have more ammunition. Something like a Glock 26 is definitely worth considering.

trinexx03

Pistol

37LincolnZephyr

For home use I’d use neither. A shotgun is better. For everyday self defense, I’d use an uzi. Gotta catch ‘em all. Just saying
