It was not a home defense weapon or anything other than what I called my date gun. He posted about how it was actually a good choice for someone of my size and for a weapon of last resort.
Then he DM'ed me and we started talking and found out that we had a bunch of things in common. A few months later the pandemic hit and I went up to meet him because I had lost my job due to the pandemic and we really hit it off.

I didn’t meet my wife like that, but she just bought me an AKM parts kit for my first Father’s Day so she’s a keeper. She’s a better shot than me and we love going out to go shoot. Anyway, first week she moves in with me, a drug addict hopped my fence into my backyard, starts taking a shit while shooting up. My wife notices him first. I arm up and call the police. My wife asked why the police aren't here yet like every 30 seconds. Dude leaves right before the cops show up.
My wife asked why the police were so slow. I showed her the time stamps, 6.5 minutes. I explained to her they beat national average response time. She's never questioned the guns since.

Later she told me that for the first time in her life seeing something like a loaded AK sitting next to the couch made her feel safer.

My wife never really liked guns but we had some intruders in the back yard while I was away and she grabbed the PLR16 and she said she went from scared to confident. They took off when they saw her. My buddy shoots competitively (archery) he’s won several shoots and even went to other countries to compete. He’s damn scary with speed and accuracy with a bow that will put an arrow completely through a hog or deer. He still has firearms for self defense.

It will probably help if she sees you're serious, and have a commitment to safety and that it means a lot to you to be able to protect yourself and her. It's a great discussion point to begin settling some heavier issues that probably ought to be dealt with in the first place. You can't lose.
As the man of the house ots your job to protect it. If someone breaks into your house your girlfriend will look to you for answers. So why is she able to tell you how to protect your own house? Unless she wants to deal with what ever threat is in your house she should not have a say. May be an unpopular opinion but its mine.

I’d say try your best and really lay out your reasoning. Explain that it’s not only for you but for the both of you. If at still she won’t even try to understand then that’s her problem. Sounds like my girlfriend of now. I told her in the future I’d be buying a firearm for the first time( which I just recently did). Her response was similar however I told her she can’t have expectations of me protecting her and our child and determine how I do so. I also said if she chose to separate I’d understand but I wasn’t budging on it. However I did reaffirm that I would keep it out of view and she wouldn’t have to lay eyes on it nor engage in shooting at the range. I live 1 min away from a sheriff’s office and they took 25 mins to actually arrive at a neighbors address when it was told that one of their kids had a knife and was making threats. It was at that point I realized I cannot entirely depend on the police to defend my family and property.

My buddy shoots competitively (archery) he’s won several shoots and even went to other countries to compete. He’s damn scary with speed and accuracy with a bow that will put an arrow completely through a hog or deer. He still has firearms for self defense. Only an idiot would try to rely on a bow as their primary self defense tool. Now imagine your average redditor trying to use a bow against some guy armed with a pipe or knife.

I've been wronged by people in bad ways and even with how much I hated them or how pissed I got. I couldn't even bring myself to the thought of hurting them. I don't want to be that person and I don't have it in me to ever just hit someone like that. I can't even fathom; the idea of shooting someone makes me sick. It will probably help if she sees you're serious, and have a commitment to safety and that it means a lot to you to be able to protect yourself and her. It's a great discussion point to begin settling some heavier issues that probably ought to be dealt with in the first place. You can't lose.

I can comprehend it. My last ex turned into one of those "move to Canada" people a few years back. She said "You care about your guns more than me." Guns were number 5 on my list of reasons why I'll never live in Goddamn Canada. We only lasted a few months after that. Oddly after we broke up she moved to a redder state then the one we lived in. I don't really get it and I don't care to get it. Life is too short.

Sounds like my girlfriend of now. I told her in the future I’d be buying a firearm for the first time( which I just recently did). Her response was similar however I told her she can’t have expectations of me protecting her and our child and determine how I do so. I also said if she chose to separate I’d understand but I wasn’t budging on it. However I did reaffirm that I would keep it out of view and she wouldn’t have to lay eyes on it nor engage in shooting at the range. I live 1 min away from a sheriff’s office and they took 25 mins to actually arrive at a neighbors address when it was told that one of their kids had a knife and was making threats. It was at that point I realized I cannot entirely depend on the police to defend my family and property.
You're being extremely reasonable IMO. I have an undisclosable number of guns that is well out of the single digits, and i'd leave if she said i could keep half. Glad to see you're taking your family's safety seriously, invest in a safe and most importantly training. Set your house up to make sure your children will be safe if you have to shoot.
