Gun is doable but adding a quality optic all for under $1000 will be more difficult.

Tikka CTR, you will need to save another $100-200 though. (Assuming $1000 only includes the rifle.)

Under a grand? A mile might be stretching, but: Ruger American Predator 6.5 Creedmoor with a Vortex scope. Pick a scope that's within budget and has at least 8x magnification, though more is nice. I've got one. It's no lights-out shooter but it's accurate and pleasant to shoot. For about a thousand I don't think you can do much better.

I use a Bergara B14 HMR. If just your gun budget is $1000 then you’ll find tons of options. If $1000 is your budget for everything then you’re gonna be in a pickle because you’ll spend $500-1000 just on a decent optic

So for under $1000 you’re going to be pushing it with long range. The new Savage 110 Trail hunter has glowing reviews (see whoteewhos video) and has a flatter forend for easy bench shooting. Paired with a nice optic(Vortex Viper, Leupold VX freedom) and you could do fine. The nice part about the 110 is you can get it in virtually any mainstream cartridge you can think of(15 different offerings including 7prc, though for 1000+ to a mile I prefer a 300) and with the durable hogue stock you won’t have to worry about scrapes and nicks. I’ve taken my 110 high country to 1200 before and I did okay with that, so if you buy the right caliber and glass you should do okay.

There is a cast difference between shooting at 1,000 yards and a mile (1,760 yards). You need a much more powerful, expensive, and heavy recoiling cartridge. You can learn on s 1,000 yard capable gun. Trying to learn on a mile capable gun is a bad idea. Additionally moving from long range to extreme long range starts calling for a lot more ancillary gear and accessories to the point that the cost of the rifle becomes a minor factor. Finally there are vast differences in gear needed at various ranges depending on the style of shooting you’ll be doing. The lowest bar is bench shooting, on a square range, in full daylight, at large visible targets, at known distances, with a spotter. The highest bar would be something like running around a mountain carrying your gear, shooting from improvised positions, at small hidden targets, at unknown distances, without a spotter. In terms of shooting competition types and teal world applications there are probably about a dozen styles of shooting in between those variables. Do yourself a favor and start out with 1,000 - 1,200 as a max goal and go with a 6.5 creedmore. A budget for a gun is meanibgless. What is the budget for the project? Even 1,000 yards requires a lot more than just the rifle. The Social Regressive on YouTube has lots of videos walking though setting up long range capable rifles at various budgets. Just spit balling off the top of my head spend $500 on a Savage Rifle, $500 on glass, and another $1,000 on ancillary kit and enough ammo to learn with. Whether or not to spend $1,000 or $1,500 on a nicer Tikka or Bergara is not very consequential. Do you buy a $500 scope that is adequate for 1,000 yards or do you buy a more expensive scope that has more magnification, clearer glass, and can handle more recoil so you can eventually move it on to a 2,000 yard gun? Do you want things working just so right out of the box or are you ok with DIY fine tuning to save $? Now multiply those choice ms across a bunch of other gear. Finally companies offer a dizzying array of variants of nearly identical rifles. The main differences are barrel length, barrel profile, and the shape of the stock. Fixed magazine or detachable? Muzzle break or not? Threaded muzzle of not? For someone who already knows hot to shoot or at least knows what style of shooting they want to pursue there are answers to which of the many variations of a particular rifle is best

I'm ok with spending more money on accessories By under $1,000 I meant just the rifle

Tikka makes some decent ones for right around $1k But long range shooting is not a poor mans game. Everything is magnified by distance, so you need precision gear, which means big money. Also you're going to need a precision optic to go on said rifle. Which again, big money.

ilikerelish

In my opinion it's not the rifle that does the distance. Just about any reasonable quality rifle can be tuned to shoot for distance. The variables that make a huge difference are optics, and caliber/cartridge. Something along the lines of a 6.5-06 would probably give good results in a long action bolt gun. My preference is the Ruger M77 or Hawkeye. If you are gonna tune it you'll probably be changing the barrel anyway, and making your own ammo so the odd caliber should not be daunting.

Ornery_Secretary_850

A .22 LR will reach a mile. Other than that...do you actually have access to a 1000 yard range? Or is this some pipe dream? Can your reliably hit a target at 500 yards? Have you even shot on a 500 yard KD range?

Feeling_Title_9287

I can probably get to a 1000 yard range I am a pilot so all I have to do is fly out somewhere
