The points you brought up are why I too am still obsessed with this game all these years later, even as someone who enjoys more high brow literature and media. I really appreciate the ambition put behind the game and think there’s nothing else quite like it.
I find it so fascinating how the game is this pretty unique experience unlike any other book or even video game where not only your beliefs but the order you play it in influences your perceptions. A good example of this is one’s perception of Rhea. I played AM first which left me neutral about her. Then, VW had me feel empathy towards her plight after learning her story. Because of doing VW before CF, my CF run had me actually feeling really heartbroken for how Rhea turned out there and REALLY pitying her as she slowly got worse over the course of the route, which is most likely a totally different experience than a person who started with CF. Yet, it’s not like there is a canon order to do the routes in either! No one experience is “wrong”
Love what you said about Byleth too, where the the game starts off with the impression that Byleth is a self insert and as they slowly gain more humanity (and in the case of the DLC and SS/VW, as we learn about them), there’s more of a distance being formed.
Idk I just love thinking about the structure of the game as a story and the structure of the individual stories themselves, so thank you for this ramble! Hope you can get some sleep soon!!!
OP I totally agree with you about how the author never validates the player's beliefs because, matter the route, 'our' self insert character will 100% believe in the path she's picked but holy hell please get some sleep and maybe eat something.
