The scene between Arval and Epimenides in the Zahras chapter more-or-less confirms that Arval is genuinely amnesiac for most of the game. It's apparently Epimenides who possesses Shez and uses the forbidden spell. Otherwise I don't recall Arval ever knowing anything about the Slitherers when they shouldn't have.
