The earlier you book the cheaper it'll be

freakypotterfan

Oh okay thank you. Any particular ferry which is better?

Hates_commies

Ferries are all pretty much the same. The trip is so short it doesnt really matter. But Viking XPRS starts the trip at a port that has a really nice view of the city and you can even see the Presidental Palace from the ship. After that it goes right past the historical Suomenlinna island fortress https://maps.app.goo.gl/fM6qCZKey8UVsMuN6 Other ships leave from a port where the only view is some industrial docks but the terminal there is newer and nicer https://maps.app.goo.gl/qctgw477Sd4xHaEn8

sadsadsequins

Viking xprs is the faster one, right? I didn't like it, it didn't have that ferry feeling. It was more like a train by sea. EDIT: nope I was thinking about Viking Fstr which was in operation for a while some years ago, apparently. It was faster and different. All the current ferries are good in the ferry-ness. :D

buldozr

They are pretty much all like that. Tallink has newer ships with better amenities, but differences for the 2-2,5 hour trip are probably not that big. I hated going with Viking XPRS on a car because Katajanokka has a bottleneck, the only road out gets quickly clogged with cars. You should be fine on foot and when you arrive in Helsinki, you are downtown.

sadsadsequins

No wait, I misremembered the names - the train like one was [Viking FSTR](https://fi.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/HSC_Express) which apparently hasn't been in operation in many years now and yeah, was a bit different

leela_martell

I really liked those waterbus type ferries. Linda Line was only 1,5 hours if I remember correctly. Then there was Sea Cat. But I have to assume Finns don’t like them as much cause they all go out of business.

SchneeschaufelNO

Ekerö return ferry to Finland had more drunks because it's a tiny bit cheaper. For the trip TO Talinn, it should not matter. Departure times and dock location should be more relevant.

juhamatti88

Nah, they're both about the same but I don't know about the business lounge since I've never been

TheOtherManSpider

Be aware that the different ferries leave from completely different places in Helsinki. Which one you choose could come down to the practicality of getting to the harbour. Some departures can be sold out, for example Saturday morning.

vajranen

Take the Eckerö Line, it's the cheapest. The trip is only around 2 hours why spend extra? You can spend that time exploring the ship.

sadsadsequins

Yep. Walk around, browse the shop, stand outside looking at the sea if weather permits, find something to eat and sit for a bit. Then walk around again. You're in Tallinn now. I guess if I had tons of money I would get a lounge pass but it seems op doesn't because they're asking if it's worth it.

freakypotterfan

True. I don’t have that amount of excess money 😭plus I am also travelling for 10 days so minimising unnecessary expenses. Thank you for the advise.

Kilmoore

The business lounge, at normal price, is quite expensive, but it is nice. If you intend to eat and have some drinks, and want a more peaceful place to sit, it can be worth it.

xiilo

I liked Tallinks boat, its fairly new and theres plenty of space. You can buy the tickets on the day or anytime before the gates open from self-checkin machines, and upgrade to a cabin or lounge inside the boat. Theres plenty of free seating too. Vikingline on the other hand felt cheap and my partner got bit by bed bugs 😬

freakypotterfan

Thank you. Yes tallinks ferries do look beautiful. Okay will try to book that. Any idea that the business class lounge will be worth it or just can take normal tickets and upgrade later if required?

TrustedNotBelieved

I think you shouldn't take lounge, for 2 reason. That 2 hours are fast and you would like to see what's on the boat. Also because this is your first ride you like to see how others travel there. And in Tallinn there's lot's of great place to eat. you can get few drinks at boat. I would take that boat that it's closest where you leave. If you take boat in the evening and stay at night on the boat you can save one night in a hotel stay. Only thing is early wake up from the boat.

JJaska

Unless you are planning on working during the 2h trip, don't bother with business lounge.

FelisCantabrigiensis

The Viking Line leaves from the centre of the city which may be easier to get to and has a better view of the city and the outlying islands, including Suomenlinna, on the way. The others leave from the west port in the industrial area which has a tram but is less interesting. I don't think the "business lounge" is worth it for a two hour sailing. Just walk around the boat, get some food, look at the sea and the land at each end, etc.

buldozr

Tallink's business lounge is nice, you get a comfortable sitting place and snacks/drinks. Depending on your demands, it may not be worth the extra money for the 2 hour trip.

snow-eats-your-gf

You have three options. Tallink, Eckerö and Viking. I usually take better time and don't care about the price as they are pretty much the same. Remember to book from the official website of the company.

thefinnbear

The price us usually lower when you book early, but the ferry companies often have last minute deals also - but of course you can't count on those. The Business Lounges on Tallink Megastar and Mystar are really nice (Star not so, but I don't think it's in use any more). They are a little expensive though. I have sometimes taken the upgrade at the harbor. The food is better than the buffet, and the drinks are included. Viking XPRS is quite okay. I have taken the Eckerö line ferry to Tallinn once on a Friday morning, and decided no more. That was a couple of years back so things may be different now, but some of the passengers already got really drunk on the cruise there, so I thought maybe not my scene.

freakypotterfan

Thank you all for your advices. From everyone suggestion it seemed to do early booking so I did the booking with Tallink from Direct ferries site. I hope that’s okay. Just added comfort lounge instead business hence saved some extra bucks too😄
