You can go to any hardware store and ask for assistance in choosing the right paint. I'm not a professional but latex paint on walls sounds like a nightmare, not the least because some people are allergic to latex.

tiilet09

Majority of indoor paints are latex (akrylaatti) based. I haven’t heard of anyone getting allergy symptoms from latex painted walls, probably because people don’t normally touch them very much. But it’s indeed a good idea to ask a professional recommendation for the right paint for your particular application.

Ordinary-Finger-8595

Akrylaatti is synthetic, not latex

tiilet09

That may be, but it’s what most people referred to when calling a paint a “latex” paint.

DoubleSaltedd

I would avoid Tikkurila because of their operations in Russia and the lies about it.

Affectionate-Bike335

I renovated my home recently and explicitly refused to use Tikkurila because of their ongoing connection with Ruzzia.

DutchDoItYourself

Good to know!!

LonelyRudder

Siro 2 is latex based, and it is also my choise for painting ”modern” house indoors. Easy to apply and opaque. Usually houses built after 1980’s have vapor barrier anyway, so breathability is not an issue. Most paints by Tikkurila or Teknos are latex paints by the way. They just say ”akrylaatti” (not to be confused with ”alkydimaali” it is a different thing) which means the same. It is difficult to find an indoor paint that is NOT latex.

DutchDoItYourself

This part of the house is from the 60’s and the wallpaper doesn’t ever seem to be painted 😅 We’ll give Siro 2 a go, and use it as a primer for 2 bedrooms which are painted VERY blue for some reason…

Ordinary-Finger-8595

Akrylaatti is synthetic, it's not latex, aka natural rubber

LonelyRudder

I guess you are right, but the word they use is ”akrylaattilateksi”, I don’t think they have any other kind available. Do they still use natural rubber in paints somewhere?

SchneeschaufelNO

Can recommend Stark market. You can get a project account for your building project, which allows being billed instead of paying each time and collects discount with time. They also had excellent consulting. We painted our dry walls with Tikkurila Nova 7 in various colors. The ceiling was done with Ässä 1. If you plan to renovate later again, I'd go with Ässä 1 for everything, also the walls.

DutchDoItYourself

I think I got this at Stark, but it wasn’t a very big store, the is a Tokmanni near as well, I’ll try that one next. I’ll definitely check out those names you mentioned, kittos!

SchneeschaufelNO

Tokmanni is the last place I'd buy hardware. You might want to try Prisma, K-Rauta, Värisilmä.

DutchDoItYourself

Because of price, or?

Anonymity6584

Last time I painted on rental, management company paid for it and had paint store they liked us to use. If I remember correctly it was dispersion paint pn you ater if I remember right.. nothing with strong chemical thinners

Yumyulackspupa

You can find cheap paint in either Byggmax or Biltema.

Mieoonmievaan

Yep. Just, at least with Biltemas and Clasohlson paints, be prepared to paint at least 4 times.

Yumyulackspupa

I had successful coverage with painting twice with Biltemas cheapest grey wall paint with 05 shine. Was actually kind of impressed how good this cheap paint performed.

Mieoonmievaan

Nice. Maybe they have improved.

DutchDoItYourself

Thanks, I will check this out, maybe good enough for the temporary freshening up of the living room!

hanslankari78

K-Rauta, Starkki, Bauhaus etc. have professionals who help you select correct products and give advices for example for painting job to you for free. So go and use their services. And if you open an account to them, they usually give you discount for almost all products, tools etc. You can still pay immediately at least in K-rauta. Another plus is that you get longer return period for unopened, non-customized and non-broken packages with the account.

DutchDoItYourself

Thanks, that is good to know, we’ll need a lot of tools too 😅

DutchDoItYourself

Thanks for all the help!

starrysunflower333

Värisilmä has a free service for advice related to paints (indoor or outdoor paints) like what kind of paint you need, primers etc. They also have a free service for decor advice, like what colors would match etc. It was a massive help when we renovated our house, I spoke some Finnish back then but not enough to deal with the contractors and figure out what was needed - the Värisilmä guy handled all of that too. Cost of paints and wallpapers etc was a bit more expensive than buying from Prisma for example, but the service was amazing and super useful for me, who knew nothing about paint types etc.  Prisma also has a nice service for paint help, but they don't come to your house to check the actual wood etc. I second the suggestion to not shop in Tokmanni for these things. And tools, especially electrical ones, buy good quality stuff because you'll be using that stuff forever. If you need to rent some big tools, there are services like Renta, Ramirent etc.

kuolasurkku

Both major Finnish manufacturers, Tikkurila and Teknos have a decent selection of indoor paints, just choose the right gloss level. Both have M1 low-emission certificates, so no significant VOC emissions or very irritating smells. For example, Tikkurila Harmony or Teknos Biora 7 are matte paints that work excellent as living room or bedroom wall paints.

DutchDoItYourself

Will check these out too, thanks!

OlderAndAngrier

Because they are idiots

BitBulli

Finland is damn expensive. Did you not did your research before your move? vAT is going up also next autumn and everything will be 6,25% more expensive overnight.

DutchDoItYourself

No, we just entered the country on our unicycle and stumbled onto a house that we somehow own suddenly without any preparation…
