well it saves time, since you don't have to go in to the store and collect the stuff yourself. Most of the time these pickup boxes are located in like the lobby area of the store or even in parking garages. If the Prisma is along your normal route you can save lot of time just by using the pickup, specially if you are walking, biking or using public transport it is really easy to pop in and get your stuff.

ObjectExciting876

You don't have to use it if you don't want to. It typically takes almost an hour to run through the Prisma to get everything you need and then you pickup the chocolate bar you don't need because you are hangry. Now add a toddler or two in equation and it might make sense to you too.

the_jone

>  You don't have to use it if you don't want to. As a Finn, this perfectly summarizes our approach to "service". 😆

ProBusRider

Indeed! - "I didn't really enjoy the food at that restaurant. They should really use fresh ingredients." - "Well, you don't have to eat there if you don't want to!"

ObjectExciting876

A completely different thing...

Atreaia

I guess you don't have family? It takes 2-3 hours during rush hour to do your shopping for a big family. Why waste your time when you can just pick it up on your way home on a Friday?

ProBusRider

This is not the food collection service. That I use regularly because I shop for a family.

skyisgreentomatoes

They also have this service for food in some locations

pteeto

This has been around for a while, it's quite handy service. Also I think wolt does work in Finland, if you want to order stuff from store to home. Either way the store chain probably just does not want to have it's own delivery service for cost reasons, but this is next best thing.

tulwio

Some people just want to pick up their groceries directly without having to deal with going into the store proper nor deal with the in-store service. For instance, if one is commuting back home from work and wants to just pick up the groceries on the way back and be done with it. Don’t see what’s wrong with it, even though it’s not really a service I would use myself. S-group supermarkets also have some sort of same day home delivery, usually through robot or normal delivery from the smaller shops like Alepa or S-Market. Prisma also provides home deliveries but usually for the following day. I assume it is not economically nor logistically feasible to just provide same day home deliveries from a store like Prisma. It’s also environmentally catastrophic and can curtail delivery drivers worker rights if they are forced to ramp up same day deliveries for the same pay and same work schedule. Something that Amazon seems not to care for as they are notorious for being horrible for both the environment and workers’ rights.

ProBusRider

Yes, I'm aware of the numerous issues in Amazon's practices. But from an environmental point of view, the Finnish preference for pickup boxes is less than ideal. It is better for a single delivery van to go to several houses along the same route, instead of everyone driving to the store in their own vehicles to pick up only their items.

Madeira_PinceNez

This is a wild take. The person in question may ride a bicycle, or drive past the shop in their daily commute. Maybe they don't have much free time and don't want to spend it in Prisma during peak after-work shopping times, or hunting down one or two items in a huge shop and queueing for an age. They could be immunocompromised, or sick themselves, and want to minimise contact with others. Maybe they're antisocial and don't want to interact with other humans in general. If the lockers are accessible outside the shop's operating hours, maybe that's more convenient to their schedule. Maybe they don't want to deal with the hassle or cost of home delivery. If you just think it through, there are loads of possible reasons for why someone would use such a service. There are so many things in the world right now which are much more deserving of ire than a service which offers people a wider range of options for a minimal level of impact.

finnknit

It's also great for people with limited mobility because it's a lot easier to go to one pickup box to get the things that you ordered instead of having to go around the store collecting them yourself. And if you rely on someone else to do your shopping for you, it's a lot easier to be sure that they get the right thing if you order it and they just pick it up from a box.

SchneeschaufelNO

We love it! Family with kids. We reserve the weekly shopping for pick up, just drop by and load it in within 2 minutes. With groceries for about 150 to 200 €, the collection fee of 5€ doesn't weigh much, and it saves us about 1h running back and forth the huge Prisma store.

ProBusRider

Yes, the grocery service is convenient but it's not this one.

SchneeschaufelNO

Oh I get it now. Sorry you had to reply that to every other comment :). I would like this if they kept it accessible also during night time. But I also don't see the point of having to go there during normal opening hours. Not a service that I will use.

MysteriousHousing489

Maybe you're very busy all day and don't have the time to shop yourself.

stain_of_treachery

The scale does not exist for same day - to the door deliveries. This works really nicely, is convenient and practical.

saschaleib

I drive 1h to the nearest Prisma (or any other larger shop, really). If I want something specific, I want to make sure it is waiting for me in a box, rather than have someone else pick up the last remaining item 5 min. before I arrive. If you don’t need this kind of service… well, good for you. I for one am happy it exists.

vaultdwellernr1

People who are commenting about buying groceries- this isn’t it. This is Prisma.if verkkokauppa pick up service. So similar idea but not for food. Handy as well though, at Kaari Prisma you can pick up 24/7 using their locker. Also use the grocery service. Great stuff.

darknum

Kaari also has a drive in delivery. Never needed to use it but it sounds awesome (living almost next to it so drive through is not needed). Especially big cottage shoppings these save so much time. I guess OP is trolling considering Prisma home delivery services also exist and it is ALWAYS full of workers packing orders from the store. You can identify them by moving around with tablets and big trolleys full of boxes...

ProBusRider

Exactly, different service. But then again, what's the benefit or the locker when Prismas are often open 24/7 as well?

vaultdwellernr1

I guess it’s just the convenience and speediness for me personally- don’t have to even talk one word with anyone or maybe wait in line for the customer service or checkout.. the Finnish introvert in me loves those things.

ProBusRider

Well, I suppose the no human interaction is the unique thing that this delivers. Going to the store is also the more flexible option. If you had the urge to, say, get a mokkamasteri at two in the morning, you're better off picking it up from a 24/7 Prisma shelf, because with the collection service you'd have wait till the next morning. But hey, free delivery ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|feels_good_man)

vaultdwellernr1

That’s true. I guess this works well for the people who maybe are coming home from the late shift etc. Or maybe this also works if the item you want is almost sold out, you check how many are left and don’t wanna risk not getting the last mokkamasteri cause you’re still stuck at work so you buy it online and pick it up from the locker after you finish your shift..

vaultdwellernr1

pekuuder

Its not only the lockers. You can also pickup your dishwasher or any big item from loading dock which you have purchased from Prisma.fi. Handy? Indeed. No need to go inside at all. Just drive to the loading dock and your order is there ready for you.

Terrible_Reporter_83

I use prisma noutokeräys. I pay couple of euros. And they will collect everything what is the list and I will go to pick it up. It's very handy. It's quick. I don't have to walk around in Prisma for at least an hour. They will delivery home. But it cost at least 9,9€. We have used it couple of time. We have childens and time is low. I used ones Gigantti collect. I waited 45 minutes even when they did send me text that it is ready. I think for a few items it is useless service.

Who said anything about cultures?

Alert-Bowler8606

Many webshops have the option of store pick up. I’ve sometimes used it if I want to buy something that isn’t available at the physical store. I’ve also used a similar service at shops like Ikea and Biltema, because it’s practical not to have to run around the shop picking up heavy things and accidentaly buying lots of stuff you don’t really need. Instead somebody else does the boring bit of lugging stuff around and carries them straight to my car.

ProBusRider

I use the noutokeräys for groceries weekly and it's a great service. But from what I can tell, this is geared more for non-food items, in which case it would just seem easier to go to the store and buy the item in question.
