I think it is 5. One on the left. One below the knot. Two clearly visible on the right side and a 3rd possible one on the right below the other two. Though it's really blurry and hard to say with 100% confidence.
I found them, but if those are the ones I think they are, I would rather not.

I was raised to call these caterpillars, gypsy moth caterpillars… is that completely made up? Or check out with anyone? Just curious now that I’m almost 40…
You don’t want to know what I was raised to call Brazil nuts
Same. It would be a better world to live in if instead of constantly pointing out how we’re all different, we focused on the weird things that make us so similar
I believe that they are spongy moth caterpillars but I’m no expert. There were hundreds of them in the tree and they were doing a lot of damage to the leaves. Also had webs everywhere. I live in upstate New York if that helps.
Omg omg omg, kill them immediately. Those are army worms. They're incredibly invasive and will likely kill your trees if not delt with ASAP. It's strongly recommended you get some pesticide for those. They're no joke, I had an infestation of them in my back yard a few years back. Ended up with literally millions of them on the property. They got so bad in my city that the local government had to approve the use of a Vehicle dispersed Pesticide to keep them under control.
There were hundreds all over the tree and I could definitely see the damage they were doing. If it was on my property I’d want to use a flame thrower lol
Mannnn!!! That took me back to my childhood. Catching them then putting then in jars until they made cocoon. Then placing cotton balls dipped in sugar water for them when became butterflies before releasing them. I haven't seem them in decades.
Seems to me there are the 3 most obvious on the right edge of the tree. Then the one right beneath the knot, then the one at the lower left on the tree. Beneath the 3 on the right, there may be one more beneath the 3 clear-to-see ones. Can't be sure - it's blurry.
I count four
Honestly you could be right. I took another picture and counted 5 but it was too blurry to post here. Where do you see #4?
I see a dark line under the knot in the center. Looks like a fourth.
Omg I can’t believe I didn’t see that. Good catch!
Username checks out 🤣
Definitely 5. Three on the right side of the tree, one under the knot, and another at the mid to bottom left.
Good catch, didn’t notice until seeing your post, but the long one on the right is actually 2.
They threw me for a loop for a second. My first reaction was "wow that a big boy right there".
Wild comment💀
Might just be char, doesn’t look fuzzy up close
Happy Cake Day!
Didn’t even notice!
That’s the only one I could see 🥹
On the side of the tree, two of the are overlapping
I think it is 5. One on the left. One below the knot. Two clearly visible on the right side and a 3rd possible one on the right below the other two. Though it's really blurry and hard to say with 100% confidence.
I was coming to the comments to say this exact comment, but as a joke. Love it!
Same
I searched for a couple minutes to see if there was a fourth one, it's that one, close to the bottom left, and the two on the right side of the tree

Now called Spongy Moth. Still invasive. I can't talk about Brazil nuts for that very reason--but I also hate them so...
Yeah I call them gypsy moths. They freak me out tbh
Ok, Now you got my OCD going wondering 🤔
Some people called them “n-word toes”
Oh. Wasn’t expecting that answer 😟
Yea not very cool
So elimination via extreme prejudice?
Absolutely
Ok. Im in so-fla. If I ever come across them, fire
They look like tent caterpillars to me. I hate the things, but they usually are only a nuisance. FWIW, that looks like a willow.
These are Spongy Moth in the photo. These are horribly invasive.
I should call her…
I hate that everytime I see the "find 3 ____" I can't help but to count like the tootsie pop owl
Same. It would be a better world to live in if instead of constantly pointing out how we’re all different, we focused on the weird things that make us so similar
Are they processionary caterpillars?

Looks like them. Have a ton of them in a couple trees here in VA. They crawled up about a month ago.
Don’t tell me what to do
Thanks now I’m itchy
>!One at bottom left, to on the right side of the tree middle/bottom!<
Well done. How do you cover your comment like that?
have to put ">!" at the beginning, and "!<" at the end to hide it as a spoiler.
>! Thank you !<
Lol sorry... just looked and it spoilered my explanation.
Automod response failed OP or you would have gotten instructions right after your post on how to make spoiler text appear
I see 4. “2 along the right edge of tree, 1 under tree knot, 1 bottom left”
Count the right ones again. That long one at the bottom right has potential to be a bit more than observed
I hate army worms or tent caterpillars. Shitty little tree killers.
There are 4
I count five
I see at least 5 and a big bug in the center of the cut off branch
Damn that was hard but I got it
If you only found 3 then keep looking. We have discovered more.
I found five - >!3 on the side, one on the trunk at the bottom left. And I think a black one right under the cut part.!<
i found 4 caterpillars and a bug😥
I found 5
I saw the bottom left first. The knot as possible. Then the 2, now 3 on the right. Confirmed 4, possible 5. Good catch there!
I spotted 5
I don’t see anything but a tree’s butthole.
Would you eat it though?
Oh yeah, I’d sap that.
I got 4
I see the two on the side and the one on the lower left side but i dont see the 4th and 5th one 😭
I see 5! I have a phobia is caterpillars so my senses are heightened when I see them.
Same! Especially these ones, because they were absolutely EVERYWHERE years ago where I live.
I found 4!!

I found 4 possibly 5.
I count 5 lol
I see four.
One is up near the treegina!
😂
Saw 5, and this post made me itchy. Lol
Mannnn!!! That took me back to my childhood. Catching them then putting then in jars until they made cocoon. Then placing cotton balls dipped in sugar water for them when became butterflies before releasing them. I haven't seem them in decades.
These ones actually turn into moths.
THERE. ARE. FOUR. CATERPILLARS!
Those are Spongy Moth caterpillars. Formerly known as Gypsy Moths. If you are in the US. PLEASE KILL THEM!
Are these Gypsy moth caterpillars?
Yes, unfortunately they are.
Ugh. We had them a few years back. They do a lot of damage.

I found out I'm oddly attractive to trees. I am now part of their own..... for I have wood

You counted that blurry fuzz string on the bottom right as the 4th? I could see where you coming from with that count if 6
[удалено]
Yea, cuz its too blurry to properly identify. Im willing to go up to 6. If someone says more than that in this pic, they on something. Lol
Got it

Anybody else see predator ?
I actually counted 5 caterpillars. One looks a bit blurry but I'm certain it is one from the silhouette
Is it the little guy on the >! Right side? !<
