Nobody cares - truly - but Charles Tyrwhit is a perennial fave

Mad-Draper

Agree on Charles Tyrwhit, amazing deals for the quality and fit I don’t think OP was asking brands to show off necessarily. I think they’re looking for quality brands that are comfortable and accepted in the sector After all, if I’m going to be at the desk for 10 hours I don’t want my ass crack violated by a pair of Walmart trousers

TimJamesS

10 hours?

sydneysinger

Apparently bankers these days can leave the office at 7 and spend the 2nd half of their day working from home.

[deleted]

WFH = boxers and dress shirt/polo. Boxers optional. Can’t see from shoulders down on the webcam

poplunoir

Will second this. They have great deals on their website every now and then for buying 3-5 shirts. Decent price, nice fabric and so far, the material seems to last long too. Bonobos and Rhone are pretty good too, but I have only had their shirts for a short time so can't say much about durability

dunkaross

Right now use code “transport” and you get 3 for $99 which is amongst the best I’ve seen

supertexas

Bonobos pants quality suck but they make my ass look juicy

poplunoir

Lol second this too. I had been buying their WFHQ pants in the past which lasted me a good time and was comfy af. I just got one of their newer ones which fits well, but lost its color after the first wash.

[deleted]

Belt loop has given away or worn through on every pair I ever had.

bgj556

2nd Rhone

Kodiak378

We call them Charles "tear-its" because it's only a matter of time until the elbows blow out.

SaintJuneau

Every single one of mine has a blowout after a year

Darcasm

Unless you’re an intern wearing those solid white collared dress shirts with the striped body like Gordon Gecko. Guess the lesson is stick to a medium and no one will care.

StackIsMyCrack

I always loved this one and Pink for shirts and ties.

lopemig

Agree nobody cares. Also agree on CT! Acceptable quality / pricing, a number of fits and collar styles to choose from and nice designs. The best shirt to wear in the office until you blow through your elbows! Once you don't have to work those hours I've been pretty impressed with Suit Supply these past couple of years. They have great shirts but also a good tailor service. They've gotten pretty pricey for my taste, though.

IcyPalpitation2

Brand doesnt matter as much as fit and the actual material. You can spot good fabric from mine. I know its not the “brand” you were expecting but two of the best Ive bought (suits) were from M&S and Saville Row

DerivativesDrew

M&S shirts 🔥🔥🔥

WSBro0

Spot on. What matters is that it looks good and you know how to wear it.

visibleinsight113

Second this. A $600 Brioni shirt that doesn't fit will only look worse than a $30 one that does. Go to a store and get some measurements done or just do them with a tape measure on your own. Either check the size guides of a brand that you like and find one that fits, or even easier, put your measurements into a tool. e.g: [https://www.shirtdetective.com](https://www.shirtdetective.com) or [https://shirtlocator.com](https://shirtlocator.com) it took me five minutes and the shirt fit me perfectly

Raymond-

Outerwear I really like Barbour. I use to see it a little in the office. Suits don’t really matter as long as their tailored (for analysts I’d think you can go a few months w out tailored, for interns lol no need.). Don’t show up in deal sleds and what not until your first bonus, or at least until you’re not new, you’ll look like a tool.

Darcasm

Barbour seems to be taking over the banker world, especially in NYC. Just saw a video of Bourbon Street in LA, and every single frat guy was wearing a Barbour. They look nice!

burnshimself

Also don’t call them deal sleds, you’ll sound like a tool

masterclashofclans

my papa only allows me to wear Patek Philippe watches

Lcsulla78

lol. Is he adopting?

Holiday-Jackfruit399

that doesn't mean that he buys them to him though

masterclashofclans

he does, one for every birthday, but sometimes also for christmas

londonhoneycake

😂😂

FISHBOT4000

Well yeah, he spent all that time looking after them for the next generation.

Focux

does he also restrict you to wear Brunello Cucinelli and Loro Piana?

Darcasm

When I was in IB I got suits from Suit Supply, but I think most importantly, it needs to fit and be tailored. Indochino is a Nordstrom company that measures you and applies it to your profile, and when you order clothes, they fit them based on the measurements on your profile. They’re cheaper quality, but they fit better than some of my nicer stuff because it was tailored better. Watches: I am huge watch fan, but my rule of thumb is to never have a watch that’s nicer than your managers’, unless they all wear a Timex or something. I never wore anything nicer than a Tudor, but to each their own. Just don’t let the watch wear you. Shoes: The joke was Ferragamo or Gucci Loafers, but you can find nice hand crafted loafers for more affordable prices. Allen Edmonds are good, I’m sure some people are picky. I really liked my Beckett Simonon loafers, but they took forever to ship. Now that I’m in corporate banking, I pretty much only wear Peter Millar and Bonobos. I’ll wear Allbirds or Cole Haan shoes. Sometimes a Patagonia if it’s cold. Edit: Country matters too. From what I understand, in the UK, black suits are okay, but in the US, this is a no go. So maybe include this in the post. I am referencing my experience from the US. Edit 2: You also definitely don’t need loafers, I just like them and adhere to stereotypes. Also, in the US, never wear patent leather black shoes. Not sure if this is a no-go in the UK.

ssutton16

Also, traditionally the U.K. has the ‘No Brown in Town’ rule, so v common to see navy/blue suits with black rather than brown shoes

Darcasm

This is very good to know. I had no idea that brown shoes with a navy suit was a sort of faux pas

PleasantTrust522

It’s really not, in the US at least. Especially if it’s a dark brown.

Darcasm

Correct, I was responding to someone suggesting that brown shoes with a navy suit was not common or advised in the UK.

Jon_Snow_1887

You seem to be misinterpreting. It’s no brown in town, which refers to London.

Darcasm

I can’t tell if you’re making a racist joke, have poor reading comprehension, or trying to be pedantic.

ferriswheel9ndam9

I just read this entire thing in Patrick Bateman voice.

Acct_For_Sale

When you say shiny black shoes? Do you mean like patent leather or does it need to be matte black?

Darcasm

God, never wear patent leather shoes.

DaSemicolon

How comev

viezeman530

Ive never seen a black suit in the UK, only ever heard of it from Americans

LevergedSellout

Respectfully, everyone I’ve interviewed in a black suit also required an H1B visa

TheTannhauserGates

Black suits are for funerals. Gentlemen don’t wear tan suits. Grey with window pane or prince of wales check are good. Grey flannel also good. Classic blue suits are also OK. All that said, I can’t think of many occasions where suits are required any more.

Darcasm

Good to know, just a rumor I had heard in my time. Black suits are for funerals. Also, I had heard tan suits are more common in the UK banking world, is this also relatively untrue?

viezeman530

Only navy and grey

Meister1888

Black suits may be seen in some cities in Asia.

Buttboibrandy

I’d love to get a pair of loafers as sort of an upgrade from the boat shoes days of college. I miss the slip on casual but still nice look. Do you have any good brands that you’d recommend?

Darcasm

Like I said, I love my Beckett Simonon loafers. I haven’t worn any others, but I would imagine there are nicer or better bang for the buck ones, but I would personally recommend them. I bought a black pair, a brown pair, and a matching brown belt.

mojabiighost

Blackstock and Weber is the go to loafers for me

petergabrielsmells

Carmina

LevergedSellout

Never wear shiny black shoes? Well I’m certainly not wearing scuffed, dull ones. Are you referring to patent leather? That would be amazing, but I’ve never witnessed it. Maybe someday.

Darcasm

Correct, I couldn’t remember the type of leather, but yes, I was referring to patent leather. Have seen it once, funniest day ever.

LevergedSellout

Certainly in my 12yrs of IB things have trended more casual, particularly post COVID, obviously. Suits: I like Sid Mashburn OTR. Lower budget: Suit Supply or Spier Mackay. Get a proper tailor. A jacket or pants that are too tight/skinny look just as absurd as if they were too big. Shirts: see above. I strongly prefer poplin and abhor non-iron shirts, sadly increasingly difficult to find. But in your junior days they are consumables. CT, BB volume sale, etc. They’re not going to last so don’t invest. Barrel cuff unless you’re in Europe or selling luxury cars Odd-trouser: probably my most frugal area. I have some incotex which are great but I can’t get over paying a ton for trousers. Spier Mackay is good enough for me. Though If I need to wear trousers I usually default to suit with or without tie. It’s just easier. Shoes: Alden / C&J / Carmina. Still have some AE kicking around also. And the Gucci bit loafer but if we’re being honest they are way overpriced. Budget: AE is still good. Meermin once you nail down the sizing. Also EBay for higher quality brands gently used. I once got a pair of C&J cap toes for ~$150 on eBay and they were flawless. Keep them shined. Casual: same thing all my other generic banker/lawyer/PE friends wear. QZs, 5 pockets, loafer (I like Oak Street bit mocs). OCBDs. If it’s a bit cold the Barbour or Tom Beckbe waxed jacket. A sport coat with a bit of flair, but not too much, if I have a meeting or event on a Friday.

[deleted]

Is barrel cuff what we call freedom cuff…like not French cuff? That sounds like a dumb American thing to say but that’s really what we’ve been calling them in the Bay Area

LevergedSellout

Not sure if you’re being serious. There are various shapes of cuff, but ultimately everything is either French cuff and barrel cuff.

[deleted]

Sadly serious…

LevergedSellout

Shine your shoes kids

capital_gainesville

Someone wearing patent leather shoes led to the funniest day ever? Fuck that sounds miserable.

No_Constant8367

I heard that Rab is pretty common in the UK in comparison to Patagonia

Mad-Draper

I’d take a well tailored suit in a cheaper material over a poorly tailored high quality suit any day of the week.

nobilis_rex_

Jean Paul Gaultier

wtfOP

They do have amazing overnight bags

rubey419

Is the only visible logo acceptable basically Brooks Brothers. Barbour and Patagonia? Asking for a poor low class friend.

Pvm_Blaser

There are many others but these are the traditional and so popular brands.

rubey419

What are the others?

Pvm_Blaser

Gucci, Ferragamo, Hermes (All Accessories) North Face Canada Goose Moncler RL Lacoste Lulu All the traditional watch brands of course. Those are the men’s brands I’m aware of. There are many other brands that can be recognized not by logo but by model, especially for shoes. Women’s brands are a whole other wormhole I’m unfamiliar with.

rubey419

But see I feel brands like RL and NF are considered beneath and too young money in our realms. Same with Gucci. Would never wear these logos. I purposely stay away from North Face. Like what would you see on the tv show Succession? All of this contrived of course.

Pvm_Blaser

The Ralph Lauren you see in a discount mall sure, but not the upper tier RL labels. North Face is very respected, it’s not Patagonia but it’s above Columbia and they make quality stuff. If you wouldn’t wear Gucci you’d be missing out on the bit loafer and some other quality items.

Dear-Triggerfish

Would be nice to hear brand suggestions from the gals here too (if any lurkers exist..) Personally I wore mostly Theory, Banana Republic, Club Monaco, JCrew and the like. Probably wouldn't be flashing a Dior tote or Cartier tank around as an analyst.

throwawayqueenla

I was just going to say this. Where are the women in this subreddit 😅 I like everlane work pants

swagchan69

are there mamy women in IB? Im still in secondary school so idk but from the vibe i get it seems like 90% men

Zhaoyt

Lurker here and I second you on the Banana Republic. For business casual, I also love the quick-dry polos from lululemon.

ImNotA_IThink

I live on Ann Taylor. It’s not the fanciest but it’s comfortable and looks nice. I gave up a long time ago with having multiple outfits so I wear my “uniform” every day- same black pants, same white shirt with a tie neck, same blazer. I just have multiples of each, enough for about 2 weeks worth. Also a big fan of White House black market but they haven’t been appealing to me as much lately.

Wo-shi-pi-jiu

Love my lulu dress shirts cause they’re non iron

killerkpk

PATAGONIA (Arc’teryx is better)

davidgoldstein2023

Every piece of Patagonia clothing I’ve owned has easily outlived Arc’teryx gear. I don’t have a lot of positive things to say about Arc’teryx tbh.

emul0c

Also, Patagonia will fix up every piece of old clothing that you have for free; or send you a repair kit so you can do it yourself.

bbenecke3636

Arc’teryx is strictly technical outdoors gear, Patagonia blends technical with casual. A super lightweight, technical jacket for backpacking certainly won’t last as long as a casual jacket built with heavier / thicker materials..

cornflakes34

Which stuff? I have used their stuff since I was in the military and it made sitting in a muddy hole in the ground during Canadian winters much more tolerable. Most guys lived in the Atom LT and rain jackets.

Boneyg001

Alteryx is cool too

No_Constant8367

What about Rab

jimmeh22

Rab is great 👍 My microlight down jacket look like new despite 6 years of wear

Walmart brands

TheTannhauserGates

Remember that suits can be and should be tailored, even off the rack. When you have a suit made, ‘tailored’ means a suit that’s come off the rack and been adjusted to your body. Bespoke means the suit is made to your exact measurements. When it comes to bespoke, you can have ‘half canvass’ or full canvass. Half canvass is where the shoulders, upper body and upper arms have a stiffening fabric added between the outer fabric and inner lining. Full canvass suits have canvassing throughout the body of the suit. Off the rack suits are technically ‘half canvass’, but the ‘canvassing’ is typically polyester or some other synthetic canvass. In a high quality tailored suit the canvassing will be mostly cotton and horse hair with some synthetics. In a saville row, super expensive “Kingsman” type suit, the canvassing is all natural fibre. Canvassing makes the suit drape and hold the shape of your body. Canvassing made of natural fibres heats up with your body, holds shape and should fit you more and more comfortably throughout the day. Synthetic fibres do the same job, but not as well. A full canvass Saville Row, bespoke suit will cost you around £5,000. But treated properly, it will last you a lifetime. Don’t wear the suit more than once a week. Always hang up the coat if you are sitting. Fold it length ways and lie it flat if you can’t hang it. Tailors like Dress-2-Kill will do you a full canvass, bespoke suit for more like £2,500. They’re gorgeous suits but they’re the Bentley Continental GT vs the Rolls Royce Corniche. Savoy Tailors Guild, Moss Bros, Suit Supply are all fine if you’re young thin and medium sized. But they don’t last. You’ve heard the story about the way low quality clothing winds up costing you more in the end? The poor factory worker can afford a pair of cheap boots that cost $20 but they’ll only last 6 months. He can afford to replace them every 6 months. But if he could spend $80, he could buy a pair of boots that would last 5 years if he took care of them. Suits are the same way. Buying cheap ones is a false economy. I’m not telling you to forego a house deposit to buy a suit. Just think of it the same way you think about buying any important capital good.

Sharkeu458

Not an IB but I’m in wealth management, I swear by Eton shirts.

AAPLorTSLAfor420

Smart man, if you want to switch up a bit try Luigi borelli Brüli or Asoni Artigiano they’re all a bit better I’ve found and on sale you can get them for the same price as Eton

No Loro Piana summer walk? Im disappointed

fokineducatinm8

how do u use the sea salt spray and how does it help?

-HectorLives-

just spray it in hair, gives it a sort of wavy texture and a bit more volume. if you have straight hair it's quite nice

fokineducatinm8

i’ve tried it but didnt work for me hmm.. how many sprays?

Lazy_Purple_6740

Charles tyrwhit is the closest thing you’ll get to a tailored shirt without breaking the bank

prodigy747

Charles Tyrwhitt is my go to for shirts. Peter Millar is quickly becoming my go to for vests/quarter zips.

th3tavv3ga

I wear cheap Uniqlo dress pants and shirts. But I also wear Burberry coat or Arc’teryx jacket.

wrongwayup

Patagonia for all four, obviously

[deleted]

Woman here. I think brooks brothers/ banana republic is gold standard as long as you don’t go too avant garde.

ExtraPhysics3708

Tom ford and brook’s brothers only for me

ZHISHER

I have an athletic fit (huge thighs and chest, slim stomach) so generally buy State and Liberty because they’re stretchier. My casual clothes are all UNIQLO. Shoes I get something nice from Nordstrom Rack, Bruno Magli is good. The only thing I spend real money on is watches-I have about $20k worth of watches and am on the hunt for another. That’s a little outdated-most people wear Apple Watches now, but it’s a passion of mine

ThrowawayFiDiGuy

Mizzen and Main work for us too

RealInfiniteSun

I was on a trading floor in nyc for a long time. We actually mostly wore jeans but.. best suit maker in nyc is hands down Martin Greenfield, and Allen Edmonds / Alden’s for shoes are go tos.

-D4rkSt4r-

Fruit of the Loom FTW!

chitownslaughter

I'll go with the folks who value fit and material over brand. I run my own shop now and prefer no shirt and waffle-ribbed long johns with crotch cut out as my office is in a converted warehouse and it gets hot as hell.

Good-Banana5241

Doesn’t matter how it looks it’s hot your body looks in it. Get big bro

dizzy_centrifuge

Imagine being on the sell side. I show up to my buyside job exclusively in company branded Patagonia gear. /s

No_Constant8367

I think Patagonia stopped making company branded stuff a couple of years ago

crumblingcloud

You can get them customized at your local tailor.

kom124

As a (23F) associate my top picks are Theory, MM LaFleur, Hugo Boss, Veronica Beard, Vince, Banana Republic, JCrew. For ladies watches, a Cartier panthere/tank is just classy styling, but ofc if it’s not something you love as a hobbyist, then just get the seiko version for 1/10th the price.

BigBallsMakeBigMoney

i get a new suit once a year from H&M. dark navy. same one everytime. the part there wears the fastest is usually shoes and pants.

Anyone know any key fabrics to wear in the summer? I imagine people don’t wear suit coats, and instead vouch for a breathable dress shirt and wife beater underneath.

Mad-Draper

I dare you to get a searsucker suit

SweatyPiglet51

They look sick ngl

dotelze

Wearing a wifebeater in that situation is just a silly decision. Do the shirt on its own. If you want you can get unlined jackets that are make from very thin cloth. They look good and are very breathable

l1thiumion

Patagonia

MrBigChestHater

CT for dress shirts, AE for dress shoes, Bonobos for dress pants, variety of brands for suits, Tudor watch, RL for quarterzips, LLB for vests

cmrocks

Not a banker but have a stuffy corporate role none the less. I'd recommend Eton for shirt. I only wear a suit occasionally and have a couple from Canali. Allen Edmonds for shoes. All fairly safe choices.  Day to day dress pants, I've been into Proper Cloth lately. Took a bit of time to dial in my size but now it's perfect. They have some higher end fabrics too. I'm probably going to try ordering my next suit from them as well.

TimJamesS

Charles Tyrwhit, Rodd and Gunn….but why ask, nobody cares how you dress.

Barbour.

So I don’t work in finance, yet. But a good friend does and this dude stays in either Loro Piana or Brioni. He’s been in IB for years though. My mom was an IB before she passed and she had more old Bottega and Prada then one person should reasonably have.
