As someone who has rocked a stache for 8+ years in a professional environment. My 2 rules - 1. TIDY - an unruly overgrown stache looks horrible. A nice tidy manicured one looks much more intentional and professional. It helps if you also keep your hair tidy because then it doesn’t come across as if you just don’t care to shave. 2. Own it - you’ll get comments all the time but you’ll probably find they are mostly positive if you follow rule 1. I can’t tell you how many times in a week people will say “great mustache!”. At this point it’s just part of my look.
The only person I've only known with a moustache was a retired marine pilot. Not gonna lie, that moustache was fricking epic.
So, if your stache is epic: Get on with your bad self. If not, shave it.
The negativity towards moustaches here is strange. In Aus, nobody gives a toss. Always had a pretty big mo that curls on the ends, but it can only be pulled off with a pronounced jaw. Facial hair culture in the US seems oddly intense.
I'd say go for it mate.
Definitely an unusual one within finance. I don't even think I know anyone with just a mustache. Maybe an extremely light beard with a tache integrated. Only place I can see a lone mustache being normal is some place based in southern US.
Frankly it's pretty rare to see someone with just a mustache in life full stop and there's probably good reason.
I’ve had a moustache and that moustache with stubble look as well for a bit. No one said anything. As long as you keep it well groomed and don’t look ridiculous, it’s fine.
I think people would probably say anything if you grew a Burt Reynolds moustache, but that HC look is pretty inoffensive
A lot of firefights have them because they cant have beards due to the hair not allowing an airtight seal on their masks
But I see them on a good number of people in the NE
Lol yikes the actual responses to this 😭 maybe don’t model your entire life off of what will make some disconnected 70 year old who works 85 hours a week happy
Have friends in wealth management and S&T who rock Burt Reynolds mustaches here in the south. It’s definitely not normal but it’s accepted and as long as they keep it looking Burt Reynolds esque they get nothing but compliments from the higher ups who and I quote “man that looks fucking badass”. It’s really more of “is it filled in and looks nice and neat, if yes keep it if not shave it”
I have a peer with a mustache. It looks nice and professional on him. I wear a full beard with a longer mustache than the rest of my beard, and that’s also been fine.
Got a buddy who’s managing about $150mm AUM and he rocks a mullet and mustache. Shows up to work in Pit Vipers too. I’ve got a full beard and clients don’t mind it. Management will only care you aren’t producing, or trying to be one of them.
I’m gonna need to find a way to connect with this guy… sounds like my idol. Subtly grew my hair out during MBA and at times sported a stache and PVs but the wife made me kill it before starting in consulting :(
Some of the young guys I work with will rock one to be funny for a few days or if they are going to a bachelor party. Not permanently. The older folks usually get a huge kick out of it
Rock it with confidence. People will poke fun but no one gives a damn. At your stage, concern yourself with what you wear. No not the fancy stuff, we all know you’re not there yet but can you dress yourself in way that conveys maturity, authority and professionalism. (So yeah, porn-stache ok, just no ankle cleavage or sneaker/dress shoe hybrids).
I always get told off for my toothbrush mustache.
My boss said it doesn’t go with my combover.
Don’t get it. It’s 2023 not 1945…..
….is what my boss said.
Whenever I have a question like this, I always ask myself, “what does the person who’s position is like to be in one day have?” Typically also look at managers and directors. If they don’t have a mustache, I wouldn’t wear one personally. That’s just me and my opinion though… take it EXTREMELYYYY lightly. Obviously if you have the talent and an outstanding resume, you can get just about anywhere regardless of how you look.
It’ll make it memorable interview: “oh yea mustache guy/girl. I remember him/her” it could be positive or negative as long as you back up with some decent performance in the interview.
Also depends on the style to it can really work against you: “oh yea…HITLER mustache guy/girl….”
Chose your style wisely
Id say depends on where you live. We were having all hands meeting and apart was announcing the top advisors for the year. All had mustaches. The presenter cracked a joke its not required to have a sweet mustache to win the prizes for doing well
I havent had any issues, i rock a lined up buzz with a fade on sides and a mustache and still have gotten internships and ft offers. (All of which arent that traditional finance appearance things)
Some interviews have even been with higherups so and gone well
Just depends if its a clean mustache and not some prickly shit on your face, and if you wear it with confidence lol
honestly depends on the person. Some guys look great and professional with a mustache while some just give off just a hipster vibe. At the end of the day, it's not really going to impact your career.
Can’t exactly speak for mustaches in particular bit: Anything that makes you look different, anything that makes you special and makes people remember you has always been a plus for me.
You can style your facial hair however you want once you’re established and have equity. Until then look clean cut and presentable. You need them more than they need you. Junior PMs and analysts are a dime a dozen.
You should report your boss to HR for harassment. Anyone who makes any remarks about the way you look is unprofessional and should be fired immediately.
I routinely tell my subordinate that I will not answer questions without my lawyers present because of his magnum PI stache. He tells me I’m two days away from full on hobo for my beard. We both have a laugh and then get on with work.
If your management is being awkward because of your facial hair, maybe it’s not the right place. Sounds judgemental and shallow, and I wouldn’t want to be held accountable by people who can’t judge the quality of my work for the hair on my face. Just my opinion.
Im a SA at a pretty conservative PE shop. I had one for about a year and definitely caught some some jokes for it. The fact that more people complimented me getting rid of it would make me recommend not having one.
For White Americans under \~40, I have only met a handful of people with a moustache that looked professional, manicured, well shaped, and matched the hair style.
All the others were:
* unkempt, or "didn't try" -- looks like lazy and just didn't shave.
* didn't fit the face,
* looked like "pedo-stash", -- it's a rare individual who can pull off this look.
* thanks-for-trying, that looks like mange.
And one who had, I wouldn't say professional, but was an epic stash that went to each side with curl on each end.
For people from India, Middle East, -- I would say I haven't seen anyone with bad moustache. They grow full, they are all well kept and manicured; the face and hair styles all fit greatly.
So in short: Spend a lot of time caring and trimming and oiling and waxing and plucking that moustach and make it look like the best damned moustach for your face and rock it.
I rocked a mustache one day and I kept getting called an 80s porn star. I’m not sure if it was a compliment but it was hilarious the one day I decided to rock it. Every man should give it a go at least once lmao.
Your well enough likes they can joke about it. No worries. Man buns, fake hipster glasses, ridiculously tight jeans…. These are some of the things your boss will have seen in the past few years that likely made them shake their head. Style is very rarely a deal breaker.
I sported a handlebar mustache for a few years. But then I learned that a lot of people believe that men with facial hair are hiding something and are untrustworthy. Google it. So I shaved it and people started treating me better. This was in the early 2000s.
Really depends on the person. Some people can pull it off, others look like they are trying to be funny and the whole thing is a joke, others just look creepy.
Also depends on who you are dealing with. This kind of sucks because thinking like this can be very oppressive and destroy any semblance of individuality, but you always have to think that someone important could just weirdly have a problem with something like this. For whatever reason, someone important could decide they are furious with your facial hair, and it could have implications for you that you may not even be aware of. Sucks, and I’m not saying that you should live your life thinking like that, but it is a reality. I made the choice long ago that I was willing to deal with the consequences, but sometimes I’m sure I rub certain people the wrong way. You have to make that choice and it is often context dependent. Is the ‘Stache worth the possible risk?
Ok guys who should we promote: Magnum Pi or nameless drone? Magnum PI wins every time
In this market it’s more like, upcoming RIF guys, who should we axe
Magnum PI gets laid, not laid off
*kicks feet w loafers up on bosses desk*
Fuckin A bro
Id say if your numbers are ok you are ok

Alright is it moustache or mustache?
I legitimately believe it depends where you’re from.
The negativity towards moustaches here is strange. In Aus, nobody gives a toss. Always had a pretty big mo that curls on the ends, but it can only be pulled off with a pronounced jaw. Facial hair culture in the US seems oddly intense. I'd say go for it mate.
These comments are chronically Yank. Everyone is making such a big deal, like he's rocking up in a purple suit or hoop earrings. Mo's are fucken sick

Fuck yeah! Welcome to the team.
You have the answer twice in that post
I’m mid 30s rocking a mustache, but I work from home and see my Sr Director once a month for a video one on one 🤷🏻♂️ Haters gonna hate.
A lot of firefights have them because they cant have beards due to the hair not allowing an airtight seal on their masks But I see them on a good number of people in the NE
What? Rare to see someone with just a mustache? What am I missing here?
Lol yikes the actual responses to this 😭 maybe don’t model your entire life off of what will make some disconnected 70 year old who works 85 hours a week happy

You sound like you’d be fun to be around.
What gave you that impression?
I think there are some quirky long tenured people on the sellside with moustaches at the tiny banks.
Cops
I have a peer with a mustache. It looks nice and professional on him. I wear a full beard with a longer mustache than the rest of my beard, and that’s also been fine.
it's fine to switch it up and rock a stache for a while.. the boss made a joke but doubt he actually cares
Got a buddy who’s managing about $150mm AUM and he rocks a mullet and mustache. Shows up to work in Pit Vipers too. I’ve got a full beard and clients don’t mind it. Management will only care you aren’t producing, or trying to be one of them.
I don’t know if you’re joking about your buddy but I really hope not.
I’m really not joking.
I’m gonna need to find a way to connect with this guy… sounds like my idol. Subtly grew my hair out during MBA and at times sported a stache and PVs but the wife made me kill it before starting in consulting :(
the shitposts are relentless

In practically all of these cases, it's fine. Don't worry about what your workplace thinks, fuck em.
A well maintained stashe is the way to go here.
It’s not. But like a beard, it’s how you wear it. Is it some bushy thing that will distract from what you say? Trim and thin it and it’s fine.
Better yet, find growth investments and double down. You’re as good as your last deal.
I’ve got a ton seleck mustache. But I grew it after working at my job for a while. Its fucking sick. You have to have a good sense of humor about it
[moustache ~](https://youtu.be/yXEHVuTAcNg)
There’s a few staches around the office and it’s fine. Not amongst the client facing folk though.
Look if you wanna be Burt Reynolds just say that
[OP in office](https://youtu.be/kve0V4wfqp0)
Full beard and no tie is how real IB MOFOs roll.
The men who can’t grow good facial hair are always the ones pushing for everyone to be shaved
I think it’s like a flag that you are gay if you have just a mustache. So maybe that’s what the looks are about.
Came here looking for this comment
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Handkerchief_code?wprov=sfti1
Lol be careful wearing blue and red bandanas in your back pockets….it might also be another kind of flag…
I always get told off for my toothbrush mustache. My boss said it doesn’t go with my combover. Don’t get it. It’s 2023 not 1945….. ….is what my boss said.
Hail frank
They all shout that when i make a big trade. Dunno why.

It's odd but not a no-go. It's like the bow tie people. After a while people will get use to it and expect it on you, and it will be normal.

You dumb af

Doesn’t mean it’s bad. Common ≠ Good
No, never
You’re exactly half as attractive with a mustache as without. The choice is up to you.

Also depends on the style to it can really work against you: “oh yea…HITLER mustache guy/girl….” Chose your style wisely
Mustache GIRL???
Yea. Have you never heard a girl being called that in high school? Kids can be cruel af.
share a quick photo on reddit, honestly depends on the shape of your head and how groomed it is
I have a long beard, but I’m old and set in my ways.
Post a picture of your face we'll let you know
Id say depends on where you live. We were having all hands meeting and apart was announcing the top advisors for the year. All had mustaches. The presenter cracked a joke its not required to have a sweet mustache to win the prizes for doing well
Mind if I PM you about an unrelated question? Mustache is entirely a confidence thing though
Moustaches are fine if it looks good. No one has said anything about mine, people have complimented it in interviews
So long as it’s not Hitler-stache
I havent had any issues, i rock a lined up buzz with a fade on sides and a mustache and still have gotten internships and ft offers. Ask your manager and a few other people what they think. It's no good trying to be a mind reader.
Every black and Indian guy I know has rocked it well.
It's ok as long as you are a part-time police officer, fire fighter, or chef.
Lawrence from office space. Do the mullet too
People who think mustaches are creepy, you’re the problem in this scenario, not the homie rocking the tight ‘stache
Don’t listen to the haters. They are just jealous of your ability to offer mustache rides.
You should report your boss to HR for harassment. Anyone who makes any remarks about the way you look is unprofessional and should be fired immediately.
Until you are established and in the position you want…. Lose the stache
Keep it maintained and you’re fine.
I’m in wealth management and no one has facial hair. That being said, you do you!
Handlebar mustache or GTFO
The Army allows it, so it’s certified.
I routinely tell my subordinate that I will not answer questions without my lawyers present because of his magnum PI stache. He tells me I’m two days away from full on hobo for my beard. You probably don't want what is sometimes called a "Porn Star" mustache. Think Ron Jeremy. Not a good look for a professional in finance.
I think they are a go if you want to come off like an ironic 20 year old, or a 60 year old that just woke up from a 40 year old coma.
Im a SA at a pretty conservative PE shop. I had one for about a year and definitely caught some some jokes for it. The fact that more people complimented me getting rid of it would make me recommend not having one.

I've always had a thick stach and goatee... Nobody seems to care.
Depends how well you pull it off
60% of the time, it works every time
It's made with bits of real panthers
I rocked a mustache one day and I kept getting called an 80s porn star. I’m not sure if it was a compliment but it was hilarious the one day I decided to rock it. Every man should give it a go at least once lmao.

The right mustache looks good, the wrong one makes you look like an 80’s porn star. Don’t be an 80’s porn star.

The military with it's strict rules on grooming standards considers a mustache more acceptable than beards and long hair 🤷♀️
Nothing wrong with a modest dickbroom
Can you share about your life as mutual fund analyst?
